The planet was barren, sundered by spiderwebbed cracks that shot across its rugged landscape. From within this lattice of fractures effervesced a number of alien vapours most certainly lethal to the lone explorer trudging atop the planet’s stony hide, were it not for the manifold atmospheric filters contained within their spacesuit. Though the planet was dead now, stories told of a great civilization that had once flourished upon its grounds and that had left behind great treasures in the wake of their untimely collapse. Thus it was that the explorer had come to this forsaken place, braving its hostile environment upon the advice of a spacer’s bar story told since the planet’s discovery.

Not one to shy away from the challenges of a novel venture, the explorer double-checked their filters before continuing onwards into the fog, single minded in their devotion to uncovering the truth of a mysterious tale that had been told time and time again within the sector’s many spaceports. Such was their devotion that for a time they did not notice the great object that now loomed before them, thrumming with energy as it slowly rotated off center from its poles. When the explorer did look up, they did so awestruck. Could this be the planet’s fabled treasure that lay before them? What could it be if that was the case? These were the thoughts that ran through their head as the objected emitted a low rumble and began to seemingly fade out of existence. Distraught, the explorer sprinted towards the object, only to discover that their own feet seemed to no longer make impacts upon the ground. Indeed, as though mirroring the strange geometric object the explorer had begun to fade too, and no single scream did escape their lips as they were swallowed up by THE MIRAGE.

LIVEON returns to EATBRAIN for his second full EP, which follows in the sonic wake of his debut “Stutter” EP that smashed through the EATBRAIN horde in October of 2020. After interim appearances on the label’s “Divergence III” compilation and Blackout’s “Evolutions” series, LIVEON now leads listeners into MIRAGE, an EP that sees the continued development of the artist’s sonic palette across a series of enchanting rhythmic sequences backed by the sheer bassweight central to the EATBRAIN philosophy.

When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

TECH 130 – Gradual – Beware feat. Coppa / Swamp

As drum and bass made deeper inroads into the sunlit land of daytime radio and mainstream acceptance in 2015, the underground scene was defined by the dark and technical sound of neurofunk. And repping that style for Technique are one of their most recent signings, the Spanish production team made up of veterans Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, a team now known as Gradual.

“Beware” asserts its personality right from the intro, demonstrating that Gradual aren't shy of adding a little funk to their neuro. The mighty mic man Coppa rolls through to lay out the groove, delivering a scheme that gives that James Brown-style accent to the first beat of the bar. Even amidst the swirl of dark atmospherics, the urge to get your head nodding is irresistible. Then the heavy grind of the bass that sweeps in from the drop takes the heat up to the next level. It's precision-engineered music that expertly balances production science with dancefloor drive.

Then “Swamp” does things a little differently. Opening with high strings and a hint of approaching drums, Gradual draw us into a light cloud of chill-out ambience. This is savagely punctured by a blade of low-end, signalling the approach of something far more dangerous. That something is a stompingly percussive pattern of drums and bass, but that's just the beginning as the beat switches up and builds even further. And this tune keeps going from there, melding and interweaving layers of drums and bassline to keep that rave engaged right to the end.

If you haven't caught up with Gradual's movements yet, this is where to get on board. This release shows just a few of the facets that these guys can bring to their sound. Along with the cold scientific studio skills, they've got a raw funky rhythmic sensibility, adding up to a clear understanding of how to keep raves electrified. They've got a lot more to show off, so better pay attention.
