We are thrilled to present this mix by Chicago based JS Alvarez for our 39th entry in the series. Both Adam and I admire what Jeremy contributes to the music scene with their podcast and event series Research & Development.

JS Alvarez is a shape shifting lizard that has learned human behavior from living in cities such as Chicago and Miami. He succumbs to no one genre and can be found exploring the depths of mutant techno and unruly bass music alike.

He is the founding member of Research & Development which ignited in the iconic Chicago mainstay of Smartbar. The event series has moved on to host community focused events centered on a wide variety of often cutting edge electronic sounds at venues like Podlasie Club, The Whistler and various DIY spaces. R&D also hosts a biweekly podcast 100+ episodes deep ranging from rising talents, hometown heroes and well established DJs and producers from North America and around the world.

He's shared the booth with artists such as DVS1, Veronika Vasicka, D.Dan, Hodge and others. His mixes have been featured on NTS Radio, Mutant Radio and SutroFM among others. Catch him at The Great Beyond this July! 

I was trying to find a very textured sound within the first quarter of the mix. My attempt at some sort of atmospheric sci-fi horror score followed by something a bit more hypnotic. By the end of the mix I wanted those vibes to explode into something highly rhythmic. Something to shatter what came before and get the sweat dripping off the walls.

Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district, he was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. 
Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined Underground Resistance in 1994.
In November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind. 
2014 saw Rolando launch his own label R3 ( Roland Rocha Records) and has more or less exclusively released his own music on his label since. Rolando now a Dj for more than thirty–five years continues to work internationally as a Dj , producer and Remixer with an eclectic clientele such as Marcel Dettman, Kraftwerk, D’Julz, Ben Sims, Skudge, A Sagittariun. Rolando continues to hold his residency ( 2006 ) at Berlin club Berghain.

Rolando - Other Side Podcast #09

Nuremberg’s Agy3na is up next in the Podcast roster with a call to explore his singular and nostalgic beats. The German selector got his break on his city’s dancefloors, and added experience as curator and organiser for a number of parties as part of a local promoter collective. Alongside his nighttime ventures, the fledgling talent has also been hard at work pursuing parallel studies in psychology and cognitive science, adding another layer to a varied set of inputs that has made his contributions to music all the more distinctive. A special midweek addition to the Ceremony mix series comes this week from Casper Clark aka Volte-Face. An artist I’ve long admired, Casper has worn many hats over the years including producer, DJ, radio show host and label head but is perhaps best known for his adventures in promoting events across London and further afield, starting out co-booking Adventures in the Beetroot Field at Camden’s Lock Tavern before running the seminal Blogger’s Delight at the same venue, to Glastonbury, The End and everywhere in between. After Blogger’s Delight ended Clark started promoting under the BleeD name for In Strict Tempo favourites Blackest Ever Black, Downwards and Diagonal amongst others. 

This recording, taken from London’s Unfold is a two hour journey of deep, brooding techno Volte-Face is synonymous with. In his own words: “Unfold CIV was my first Volte-Face gig since a fateful show at Tresor in 2019. It was good to be back. Apologies for the occasional glitches in the recording”

Ceremony #3: Volte-Face

Born and raised in Queens New York music has always been part of my life. My first love was with rock and roll. It was tough growing up in a Pakistani household because my parents would always look down at my love for music. Taught myself how to play guitar, even looked into how to start my own record label company. I was determined to have a career in music. It wasn't until I graduated high school is when I got interested in Djing. But was more into hip hop, reggae, reggaeton etc. I even wanted to start off in gay clubs. But in 2012 a friend convinced me and my gf to come to an underground club. As soon as I stepped in and felt the bass all over my body and touched my soul I was like WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE! 

Ever since then been doing my research in the house and techno scene. For a year I was following my friend Ababacar to all his gigs, watch how he plays, watched his transition and basically getting schooled by him. A year after that I started in art galleries then eventually made my monthly gig at Chat 19. But I'm hungry for more!! Want to get into producing eventually and hopefully make my mark in this crazy scene.
