PARADOX PODCAST END OF SUMMER SPECIAL -- MILA DIETRICH

My next attempt. Trying out some new gear - Xone 42 I just got from Jandro, and a couple of 1200's connected to Traktor for the first time.

I tried to do a more mellow, melodic set. Found later that it had no chill. The goal was to explore the deeper dimensions of modern techno. This mix includes tracks from Planetary Assault Systems, UVB, Unam Zetineb, YYYY, KVD, Edit Select, Sven Vath, Deepbass, and Abdullah Rashim. Enjoy!

Bio:
Dance music first grabbed hold of her senses in 1985 Chicago, the House Music revolution. Through the influence of the darker side of the industrial/EBM/darkwave scene (Ministry, Front242, Nitzer Ebb, Frontline Assembly, Thrill Kill Kult), her tastes evolved into a preference for a harder-hitting and faster-paced "cavernous" sound straight out of the sparsely lit basements of Berlin. Coupled with an affinity of the "spicy side" of techno, the end result is somewhere between hip shaking and catatonic head swaying. After decades of rotating in and out of scene as a participant, a random Pioneer DJ Sounds internet find in 2013 inspired an Ableton download, with an eventual evolution into Traktor for what it offers creatively.

For the last episode of February, we are pleased to welcome our first guest from Chile. Kata Mercado developed strong interests in fine arts during her childhood and started her professional career in 2006. After moving to Europe, specifically Berlin, her sound took a radical change morphing into more acid and industrial beats, which were heard at the legendary Tresor. Then she focused exclusively on her own musical production developing an unique timbre. It is characterized by dark, fast and gritty sounds among fleeting glimpses of light and melody.

Juana (the artist formerly known as Brdhs) is so house. Birthed from a tribe of light-skinned opera singers and children of the soul mother from the universal vibrations of the earth spirit, Juana grew up on a steady diet of smooth jazz, jheri curl funk, and prog rock, which shaped her sensibilities immeasurably. Her early musical inspirations include Hendrix, Can, Frank Zappa, Roy Ayers, Deftones, Patrick Adams, Prince, Tool, Norman Connors, RZA, Pepe Bradock, Cocteau Twins, Roxy Music, Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Mtume, and a bunch of classical dudes. She began collecting records at age 4 and stealing tapes and CDs from Tower Records at around 14.

Juana has been a DC staple since 2004. Bored with her humble beginnings as a bedroom DJ spinning pulsating sweaty drug-fueled disco sessions alone in her Northside Chicago efficiency, she relocated to DC where she connected with the likes of Sam "the Man" Burns and immediately offered to carry his records around for free. This dedicated sycophancy earned her opening spots at some of the top underground house clubs in DC, such as Red, Dragonfly, and DC Sanctuary, and lots of places somewhere down on New York Avenue. Although she is generally afraid of talking with her mouth, preferring the uttering of the depths of her heart, she also caught the attention of online radio stations and played weekly shows on HandzOnRadio (BMore) and CyberJamz (Tampa), beating down office workers worldwide with her unique blend of deep house, techno, disco, rare groove, and fart noises. 

Around 2010, Juana again decided to flake on the world, going on hiatus, and robbing it of her naked and fearless genius.

A city wept.

But that very next year, she began to harken on the sweet, ethereal sounds that haunted her her entire life, making original tracks that would propel her into fame almost immediately. For one, renown UK DJ/producer Ben Sims has said of her artistry, "I don't get it," and "It's okay." This kind of acclaim has been just the beginning of her trajectory into the the souls of true heads everywhere. Her residency at Dr. Clock's, the infamous Tech Support parties, has attracted alcoholics from all throughout walking distance.

2016 and 2017 opened up many new avenues for Juana, joining forces with numerous local heavy hitters in DC, playing the Acid People party series with the likes of Ron Jackson, Damon Bradley, and Tsurugi. Juana also recently link up with TechnoFist, Void Archive, and Select DC as part of the quickly growing Sequence party series, on opening duties for Detroit's BMG, and getting muy loca closing for Discwoman (Volvox and Umfang) and Tommy Four Seven. She's also had the good fortune to open up for the likes of Rick Wade and Kai Alce, Stefan Goldman, and Pan-Pot. Watch this space!

Eschewing the trend of ham-fisted, dark monotony, Olga delivers dynamic sets of deep dives, ethereal bangers and obscure classics. A long-running passion for dance music coupled with fervent digging gave rise to Olga becoming a staple at the beloved Bossa Nova Civic Club and the city's most underground events. Aside from djing, Olga channels a wide radio presence, hosting the biweekly Top 400 at Newtown Radio and co-hosting The Plan with Nick Bazzano at the Lot Radio, which showcases their favorite touring djs. Exercising restraint while maintaining a high energy flow, Olga feels right at home throwing down full, lush melodic tracks, emotional broken beats, electro and trippy syncopation anytime from 10PM to 10AM.

We are delighted to welcome Chapter records curator Anika Kunst. Hailing from spain, Anika has started her career 15 years ago and has broadened her definition of Techno since then. The search of developing a distinctive style led her to what it seems to be a natural step in a dj career, the introduction in the production scene.

In early 2014 she launches her vinyl imprint, facing the techno in all its forms, and teaming up with great artists such as Architectural as a remixer.

Currently, she is a resident of The Pharm party in Pacha Ibiza, has her own party in Macarena club, called Technológica, and has just joined the team of one of the best techno parties in Spain, Insert.

To New York City’s dance floors, the name Katie Rex, is a familiar mainstay.  With roots beginning in the Philadelphia rave scene, her passion for the underground has crossed genre boundaries and culminated into an in-depth knowledge of music and cultural trends after dark.  Inspired by the classic sounds of Detroit & Chicago as well as the rugged influence of industrial and invigorating sounds of dance music’s contemporaries, she curates a unique blend of dark acid bass lines with club inspired drum patterns into harsh industrial.  A sound caught in her first two tracks, "Francis VII," and, "He's a Cancer," released on Brooklyn's analogue & modular focused label Afterwave Records.  Her next release "Pressure," is to be released May 2017 on JUBILEE's third installment of her compilation series, "Magic City."

Swede Peder Mannerfelt makes music that is hard to categorise. And whether producing for Fever Ray and Blonde Redhead or serving up albums and EPs on Archives Intérieures and Hinge Finger, he is fiercely inventive. From experimental tribal concept music like his The Swedish Congo Record to the disassembled and goth-tinged techno rhythms of his latest, Controlling Body, he always pushes boundaries in bold new ways. He is an artist who likes to forget what he knows and go with his instincts, and it has resulted in a body or work that is truly beguiling. 

His mix for our series is just as esoteric. It is a two hour collage that starts of as a voodooistic brew of shamanistic rituals, abstract noise and kinked techno that takes you to a dark foreign world. From there there are some more traditional passages of drum rhythms and wild machine-made sounds as well as diversions into plenty more uncategorizable sonic spheres thanks to tracks from the likes of Pinch, Errorsmith, Vatican Shadow, Machine Woman, Umfang and tens more. It’s music as warfare, as cinema, as experimentation, and it sounds like nothing else out there.

New York City-based, Lethal Trip, grew up in a household with a strong background in music and art. She fell in love with dance music (house and techno in particular) at an early age. After going to school for fashion designing, she decided to pursue her love for music. She quickly made her way into the nightlife scene, and has played for many nightclubs in Brooklyn, as well as fashion week events. She’s opened up for artists such as Frankie Bones, Juliana Huxtable, LSDXOXO, Palms Traxx & Light Asylum's, Bruno Coviello. In 2017, she started her own femme techno collective called Techno Bangs, that aims to showcase female talent in a male-dominated industry. She's been featured on the Creators Project, and one of her mixes was #1 on the Mixcloud acid charts.

This time we invited another Polish hero - Olivia.

BIO:
Known to many as one of Unsound’s resident DJs, Olivia has been one of the key figures of the Kraków club scene for the past 14 years.
The originator of the fabled Kraków club night – We Are Radar – conceived and orchestrated with her confrère Chino, Olivia remains fully committed to growing the local scene – as a member of the Radar collective, resident and main booker for Szpitalna 1 – Kraków’s leading underground club space, one half of DJ duo Chrono Bross.

Recenlty, together with collaborators Chino and Steffen Bennemann, Olivia has launched a hybrid live/DJ performance project Morskie Oko.

Her reputation has steadily amplified over the years thanks to her idiosyncratic track selection and excellent technical skills. Through raw and dark techno, liquid acid, deep cosmic reaches, the simplicity of electro and the warmth of house, her sets shine with originality and a strong belief in the sound she delivers.

She draws inspiration from both music and the world around her – from the future shock of Detroit techno, via the distinctive Dutch sound, ebm, industrial, cold wave, acid, electro, synth and house, through to the images and ideals of science fiction and technological progression. The infinity of space, the unfulfilled promises of robot designs and the unexplained mysteries of paranormal phenomena all inform her approach to music and her search for sound.
