Phase Fatale is the Berlin-based techno project of Hayden Payne. Since 2014 the New York native has earned a reputation as a techno innovator, both for the broad spectrum of dystopian, gritty, industrial-laden electronics included in DJ sets as well as his deep understanding of synthesis and sound design in his own productions. 

Having released his debut album on Hospital Productions (Redeemer, 2017) and 12"s on labels such as Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and its sub-label unterton, Phase Fatale has since settled into residencies at both Berghain in Berlin as well as 中 KHIDI in Georgia's capital Tbilisi. In 2018 Payne launched his own label BITE, where he released his collaboration with Pablo Bozzi as Soft Crash. January 2020 saw the release of his second solo album Scanning Backwards on Ostgut Ton.

The Helsinki-based multidisciplinary artist Exmantera (Daniil Mantere, they/them) https://soundcloud.com/exmantera is one of the prominent names in the Finnish underground digital electronic scene, and they’re known for their abrasive, knife-sharp outings where crispy sound design meets clangy dramatic tension. After hosting a remix on last year’s “Ross 308 EP” by the also Finnish artist Comastasis https://paynomindtous.bandcamp.com/track/ross-308-exmantera-remix, we’re thrilled to share with you their latest work “LETHALITY” EP. 

“LETHALITY” is composed of seven tracks and comes with an eerie, obscure artwork by Exmantera and uzâ a’amo instagram.com/uzaaamo/ as well as two collaborative tracks with Nova Caine @n0vad0sed and Yaokai @yaokai. As evoked by its title, the record is unforgiving in its sonic violence, aggressive distortion, and clangorous instinctiveness. Episodes inspired by the finest instrumental grime are followed by ear-splitting bursts, metallic percussions, glitching artifacts, and sinister melodies. These raw ingredients are molded into eventful tracks that immediately capture the listener despite the unrestrained rhythmic violence, guiding them down a treacherous path of digital corrosivity. In other words, Exmantera encapsulates spectacular ferocity and immaculate bloodlust in each of the compositions, molding the elements in the ultimate sound transposition of the impulse to maw, gnaw, and kill. Uruguayan DJ and producer YOZY supplies a shape-shifting mix for us, oscillating between experimental and broken rhythms to 4/4 techno and irresistible trance classics. The Barcelona-based artist also includes tracks from her upcoming album, dropping June 5th. Having released several contributions to VAs on Clan Destine Records, low income $quad, and Last Love Records, they have also delivered music to Human Club; a label based in Barcelona's Razzmatazz, where they are a resident DJ and run their own party CALIENTE. Additionally, YOZY has played for parties and festivals like Boiler Room x Primavera Sound, Raiders, Suicide Club, Voight-Kampff, Latineo, and many more. Plus, their monthly radio show on HKCR called 'Messages from the stars' has recently transformed into an IRL ambient showcase.

Having established their profile within the Barcelona scene by playing parties like Latineo, MUSA, Deprerreo, and No Tags, puxo has since released an ambient EP as a parallel exploration to their artistic output, revealing a more introspective side of their sound.

A: “Our dream B3B, it’s actually really easy to say, it also might seem silly with a sea of incredible artists to pick from. Especially all the producers here whose tracks we deeply connect with. However when It comes to it, we would have to choose our dear friend and chosen family member @0ccyx. We are a trio in our own way, always looking at the sound system, talking about our favourite artists and productions. We do what we love with each other which is: dance, scheme, run parties and continuously push each other to find the next most otherworldly track which we’ll not stop talking about for weeks. We’re our own little family, us three against the world.”

Bristol-based duo Field Case share a winding mix for us, snaking through slow-burning rhythms, meditative beats, and mystical soundscapes, exploring the deepest and most cerebral shades of techno. DJs Petrachore and Ohana are behind Field Case and began the project after meeting by chance in early 2023. They then formed Bristol’s first-ever queer community radio station, Transgression.fm, to showcase artists in the city’s creative realm. These days, Field Case are residents of Bristol events RTN and Queerky, where they continue to meld their differing musical backgrounds and sonic palettes. Their journey together has defined their sound, character and mystery, and we’re delighted to share a taster of that on this week’s mix.

A: "I’ve never really imagined walking down the aisle; the image itself never belonged to my thoughts. But if I think of it as a symbol of union, a crossing into something new, a merging of paths and transformations.. two tunes come to me: The Sound of Silence and Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel. They both seem to hold that delicate balance between melancholy and hope, love and magic.”

A: "DJ Richard - Waiting for the Green Flash. DJ Richard (@ioiooioooiooioi) is a Providence-based legend and one of the founders of White Materials records. I love his 2015 record Savage Coast, whose sounds and album art are inspired by Rhode Island’s rugged coastline. I spent a lot of time outdoors paddling and exploring on the water this summer, so I thought this tune was fitting."

Providence-based DJ and producer Emma Rak shares a multi-sensory mix for us, layered with rolling kickdrums, gauzy melodies and textured bass motifs. Blending techno, freetek, DnB, and many more genres across her sets and productions, Emma is a resident DJ on Hong Kong Community Radio and has released music on labels like @fluxcollective, @v23be, and @ninety-three-collective. Emma also runs anti-alias (@anti-alias-recs), a party series oriented around leftfield techno, embedded in Providence’s coastal, post-industrial landscape and its rich history of noise and DIY music.
