Just in time for the season of air-so-thick-you-could-cut-it-with-a-knife, Ommaya co-founder noRecall is back with an icey haul of season-ready tracks. His third EP on the label - dubbed 'Kinda Squishy' - focuses all of his efforts on what he knows best - otherworldly sound-system music. The four original tracks - 'Blah,' 'Fake a Smile,' 'Squish,' and 'Look Man' - are classic noRecall, worming their way into your mind and feet.

Supporting him are four of contemporary club music's most provocative purveyors, all hawking their brand of high-octane, unrelenting styles for the dance floor.

Mirin Doja, a fellow Seattleite and celebrated high-bpm academic, making appearances on labels like Juke Bounce Werk and Delusional Records, takes the track 'Look Man' and gives it her gun-finger treatment, flipping it into a heaving UKG slammer.

The similarly Seattle-based Jason Code (a Terminal 8 alumni and co-head of Seattle's rising club night Data Club - a who's who of IYKYK dance music energy helping to revitalize the city's scene,) lends his signature Jason Codification to 'Squish,' imbibing it with the energy of a grinning, toothy, ear-to-ear grin.

CDMX's own Octoptic - co-founder of WavaWava - returns to Ommaya after his fan-favorite contribution to Ommaya's Solstice compilation in December 2023, bringing along a non-stop, high-energy rendition of 'Look Man' with enough momentum to break through peak-time in a packed room.

Last but not least, Egyptian club music wizard 3Phaz - fresh off a year of features on labels like TraTraTrax, YUKU, and Low Income $quad - graces the label with his flip of 'Fake a Smile' - upping the pace by more than a few notches and turning it into a chugging, metallic heater sure to find its way onto plenty of USBs this Summer.

Plasma Sources marks its 5th release with Cortical’s debut EP, ‘Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes’. Pulling from both the extreme fringes of experimental music and the minimalistic tendencies of the UK bass continuum, the duo’s much-awaited first release acts as the locus point between dance floor sensibility and sonic exploration in its most immersive, visceral sense.

Cortical are world builders first and foremost. With backgrounds rooted as much in the visual arts as audio, the duo’s live AV show has already garnered critical acclaim after standout performances at Sónar and Lunchmeat. Coupling this with their list of past collaborators - which includes the likes of Holly Herndon, Arca and Skrillex - and it becomes easy to see why there’s so much hype around Cortical right now. Indeed, this EP is the culmination of months of building excitement amongst those in the know, as fragments of raw footage captured from Cortical’s shows begin to amass on social media.

‘Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes’ itself feels like the auditory equivalent of a fragmentary existence forming, fragmenting and reforming again. Noise and distortion act as integral threads throughout the EP, but on the first track, ‘Telúrica’, they take centre stage. Brittle percussive calls give way to a thick wall of bass-laden, cinematic viscerality which hits the listener almost as hard as the ensuing rhythmic carnage which erupts halfway through.

Mortar, immediately fires away into more rhythmic madness, as elements of dubstep, metal and grime coalesce into blasted kick patterns which sound like the contractions of an eldritch machine’s digestive tract. Noise-tainted bass tones kick in, tearing in and out of reality and slowly 
dominating the environment as Mortar progresses into deeper territory.

Up next, Shiny Surgery provides a respite, with electro-tinged drippings of lasers and wet gloops lifting the listener into a more sanitised and lighter space than its predecessors. Cortical’s extreme musical influences are still at play here with their signature eroded bass weight and splintered percussion on display, but in a more restrained sense. As the halfway point comes in, so too does the most introspective section of Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes, as cinematic floating pads de-sterilise the space.

Finishing things up is the namesake of the EP and arguably the most anthemic listen of the release. On Wretched Patterns And Terrible Mistakes, demented vocal chants call out across a disintegrating claustrophobic space, before grime kicks and fragmented breakbeat loops explode into existence, demanding full dance floor attention. This is pure-peak time energy, although still entirely in line with Cortical’s immersive approach to world-building and sonic exploration.

Wretched Patterns and Terrible Mistakes operates equally as an enclosed, hermetic exploration of Cortical’s fragmented, low-end focused sonic landscapes and equally as an assortment of dangerously effective club tracks guaranteed to turn heads.

For their debut EP on Tectonic, Beatrice M. drops four deep, dubby cuts bringing weighted bass energy together with techno sensibilities and advanced percussive manoeuvers. Elegant but powerful tracks built for sound systems and curious ears!

Midnight Swim is an ode to the “softer” club sounds, repetitive aquatic grooves that remind Beatrice of their go-to sport: swimming. No phones, just back and forth in the cold water, settling into a mechanical groove. The opening track, Oval, carries its title from the appreciation of soft edges, little distortion, minimal rhythmic pattern.

Upon hearing Pinch’s tune 136 Trek, (itself a nod to Zinc’s 138 Trek), Beatrice decided to name a tune 132 Trek, to continue the lineage of their musical heritage. The tune was already called Trek because it was made after spending some months in London, and realising “everything is a bloody trek”!! 

The EP’s title track is about warm-up music and enjoying the earlier hours of the party - a quick immersion and then time for bed, rather than banging club tracks all night long. Beatrice likes to show up early at the club, watch it fill and then leave as it packs out. Midnight Swim is a dip into a roller. 

The last tune of the EP features Sub Basics, the first artist to have a vinyl release on Beatrice’s own label, Bait, and one of their biggest musical inspirations. Sub Basics’ immersive progressive sounds fit simultaneously in the deep techno world and the dubstep world. A beautiful in-between.

Three years after his debut album, London-based Jeigo levels up with a new long player that displays his knack for meaningful melodies and deft rhythms while blurring the lines between ambient, garage and breaks. Inspired by three months on an olive oil farm in rural Italy, there is a beautiful sense of isolation and inward reflection to these sounds, even when the energy ramps up. Sultry, airy vocals and delicate strings weave between organic grooves on the opener, while pitched-up and pained tones bring a futurist twist to the paddy garage beats of 'Echoes.' There is a more warped low end and hints of Burial's ghostly vocal and drum designs on 'Emptiness' while 'Groundwater' is shuffling house suffused with luminous synth work that brings a nostalgic pang. Etum is a masterfully melancholic study that leaves a lasting emotional impact.

it always feels like a special day when there’s a new razrbark mix hitting the web, like a rare delicious sweet treat being gifted to us all. i’m not sure when i first discovered razrbark, perhaps a few years ago as it feels like we’ve been connected online forever (but who can keep track of time these days?), however, the day that i did was like unearthing a hidden gem. based in new york, razrbark has an approach to djing that comes from years of dedication to the dancefloor & being raver first and foremost. there’s a heat to her mixes that come from the warm glow of the tracks that she selects, the sludgy pace that allows you to practice patience and savour every bite, absorbing the mystical kinetic energy that is channeled through every record. from her contributions to ccl’s subglow, down2earth and distant signals mix series, the esoteric the lot radio sessions to the live recordings from iconic gigs such as the much-loved honcho campout and sorry records at bossa nova civic club, there’s a lot to sink your teeth into. 

another contribution to the world of razrbark, her 909 mix starts of humid with a chugging energy that comes with tracks slowed all the way down before flowing into an otherworldly selection of dreamy, acidic techno, creating a light respite from the steamy intro before ending on a grungy note. you can hear the references from one of razrbark’s key influences, buffy the vampire slayer. if the bronze booked djs, this is what they would play.

✨🤲✨ Here’s a set recording at one of the last of a festival-filled summer: @sustain-release-nyc

No set theme/mood, just a journey thru a bunch of tunes I really do love and hoped people would enjoy; but to quote my girl @livwutang, it was rooted in a love for Black music (this mix cover was taken by her during the set <3). Stitching together threads of dubstep, jazz, house, breaks, garage, hip hop, dub, etc.

At some points this kinda feels more like a beat tape with selector style mixing + no long blends. A lil fusion of tired/nervous/letting the tunes shine

Thank you @itsallhalal + the rest of the team for the opportunity to close The Gym on Fri night and for looking after me. And ofc out to the amazingly welcoming dancers inside ❤️
