When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

BLACKOUT make a bold statement with their 50th release, in the form of an intricate and carefully poised pair of blinding tunes from RIDO with SAY IT LOUD and LIAR (feat. Optiv). The mournful but epic tone of the title track, SAY IT LOUD is laced with a powerful oldschool rave sensibility both in the vocals that lead it, and the choice of lowkey frenetic breaks. But once it drops it opens out with an entirely modern and colourful, heavy stride. LIAR opens with an understated and warm tone, infused with a retrofuturistic glow coated in futurist suspense. The fast-paced, minimal breaks upon which it rides are interspersed with lean swathes of distortion and punctuated by the filtered beauty of its lead, arranged with a keen sense of suspense and unleashed energy. 

SAY IT LOUD and LIAR stand as a pair of tracks with both absolutely current but timeless sensibility, resulting in a staggeringly effective pair of bangers that will certainly be powering the dance for some time to come.

Beyond the reach of both time & space lay a land not bound by such restrictive rules, in which all manner of phenomena beyond that of the material ordinary were possible. Within this distant realm the so called “laws” of nature disobeyed themselves, warping the perceptions of any who had managed to successfully undertake the multiplanar journey to reach its impossible location. Herein, stone grew with the vivacity of plants through air that seemed to surround any being with an aberrant curiosity, as though inquisitive of what sought to inhale its essence. The waters of the world, such as they were, provided a more sturdy footing that that of the tumultuous earth from which gouts of flame occasionally appeared, perfectly inert as though frozen in time.

Whilst the journey could be made, true navigation through this plane was impossible for beings of the human material plain as evidenced by the seemingly mummified figures that occasionally appeared across its lands. Prisoners of endless age, their bodies held the positions of their final waking moments, trapped halfway through motions & expressions that would never find completion. Their faces bore no pain, their bodies no wounds. The sounds of their ends, it was said, were all of the evidence that they had passed. Within these ABSTRACT PLACES, such dying cries reverberated endlessly, each adding their own sonic character to the quiet din of death that filled the air.

JOE FORD makes his Eatbrain debut with ABSTRACT PLACES, his first solo release both on the label and since his 2018 LP Colours in Sound. LUMBERING BEAST opens the EP upon the roaring tonalities of its gargantuan bassline, backed by the determined strides of its steady drumbeat. THE END decries an apocalyptic demise with its sinister synth arpeggio and the rending sweeps of its bassline, which cleave through the track with unparalleled might. URGENCY wastes no time in rushing to fill the void left by its predecessor, speeding forth with a torrent of snares surrounded by an electrified sonic atmosphere. WAR MARCH issues the command to surrender in the face of its unrestrained might, before delivering a bassline barrage that closes the EP with finality. With ABSTRACT PLACES, JOE FORD holds nothing back across his first four track appearance on the EATBRAIN label.

Viper’s newest and most mysterious signing Giganti is back on his home label with yet another dancefloor destroyer, this time in the form of ‘Olympa’. A cinematic opening showcases the mysterious producer’s softer side as he gently eases the listener in with soaring melodies and a mesmerizing vocal hook, all the while teasing the rumbling bass that can be expected from Giganti. Proving time and time again that he is the master of suspenseful build-ups, Giganti takes his time painting the scene with elegance and grace before dropping into pure carnage.

In signature Giganti fashion, the drop is loud and unapologetic, pumped full of adrenaline – this is high-octane, no holds barred drum & bass at its finest. Energetic, bold, and brazen yet still with an elegant twist, the track is arguably the producer’s best work to date and a strong addition to the growing Viper catalogue.
