A remastered extended version of the song made for the 2006 Candela demo of the same name.

For once I actually have the old project files around, albeit not usable on my current workstation. I instead set up a WinXP VM with all my old plugins and DAW:s so I could export and reference the stuff I used. The MIDI notes and Kontakt instruments were easily exportable to FL Studio, and the only casualty was the Cubase-specific filter plugin Tonic which I had to replicate as well as I could. I also added back some parts that were cut out of the demo for time, and replaced some drums to improve the mix.

A shout-out must go to the z3ta+ VSTi and its great implementation of Hermode tuning. It's what makes the signature sound of this track possible, having such aggressive distorsion without all the mud that comes from equal-tempered tuning.

Another victim of the 2005 hard drive crash, resurrected with the help of Insider, who used to run our Candela BBS back in the 90's. Props, dude. 

This was a particularly fun project to do, since it involved recovering some fairly obscure voice samples. First of all, I bounced 40 stems (one per instrument) from the original XM file, which were then montaged and timesynced in Cubase. For some weird reason, the BPM was 138.080. I then started swapping out some of the most horribly resampled sounds, while giving others some facelifts (trivia: apart from hihats, the drums are all the original samples). I then dug up a YouTube video of the McEnroe rant, did some polishing in Audition, and then went on the abandonware hunt for the Bioforge sample. The samples for the game were all stored in a gigantic 30-minute file, and to top it all off the phrase "This is not an experiment, this is a demonstration" was not actually in the game -- I had apparently edited it together from other phrases. 10 minutes in Vegas later, and Bob's your uncle.

Bright 2010

Another resurrected XM from the dark ages (a.k.a. the 90's). 57 instruments, all out of tune, with fractional BPM changes that sure made me appreciate some of the tempo tools in Cubase. Contains one of my favorite voice samples ever, by our very own Sgt. Hulka from Stripes.

I should probably point out that this song, as well as Bright 2010, are demo soundtracks. They have bit of a cinematic structure (a weird intro, plenty of hitpoints and a grand finale) simply because they're meant to accompany something visual. Usually something with a lot of flying in it.

Bogus 2010

Would fit as a end part for a demo. Hence the name change from Andromeda to Endromeda.  Originally made by the swedish pop-rockband Kent.
This arrangement was done on a Commodore 64 using a 8580 sid chip.

Endromeda

This sucker was stuck in remake hell for quite some time. Sometimes there's just no magic, and I struggled for a long time with getting the groove to feel punchy but with some depth.

The secret, in this case, was adding the clav-like synth to make the groove a bit more in-your-face. I also added the solo section at the end and took some bigger swings with the harmonies.  Still a very short song (the original was around 2:20 I think), but I really think it's fine that way. It's more of a short story than a novel, if you will.

Oh, and the name. Another one of those silly puns. I just wish I had thought of "beer mitzvah" back then.

Lazy Bytes

Just a little story about a girl, a boy, and a big, scary world.

This track came about mostly because of the main theme, originally intended for a more straight electro-type track. The goal was to find interesting harmonies that could work under such a simple melody, and keeping the major / minor ambiguity alive was a fun puzzle. As always, I haven’t got a goddamn clue which key or scale this song is in, I’ll leave it as an exercise for the listener =)

The world/folk/fusion space is an interesting one, with many ways of jumping between styles and genres without losing cohesion. The B-riff is an adaptation of something I heard from Hungary once, but also had this great latin vibe that gave me ideas for the piano riff.

For the breakdown, I resisted the temptation to track the chords to the solo the way I’ve done it in the past. Something about leaving the melody open to interpretation seemed appropriate. The fusion solo contains a tiny homage to Esbjörn Svensson Trio, one of countless influences that have shaped my view of jazz and its many incarnations. A bonus was the accidental 80:s chunky Stratocaster patch I whipped up using Harmor. Gloriously kitschy =)

Building some tension towards the end, I decided to try and navigate back to the main theme for a bombastic Eurovision finale, which seemed appropriate. All in all, a fun little adventure!

This track was made for a Sega Genesis using Sonar X2 DAW, FMDrive and SPSG VSTs, Sonic 3 PCM samples for drums. A Roland TR-08 was used to overdubs a hi-hat. The sound was recorded with a mix of an GenMDM device and emulators for further mixing. Apart from some panning (mainly PSG), everything is stock. No reverb, compression, FX or EQ used.

A Trace of Space

Originally released in 2006 under a different (and somewhat silly) name, this track was really only meant as a jam session; I was in a temporary apartment, without my speakers, and just had to get it out of my system. The main riff just had something that stayed with me. 

The original mix was terrible, so I decided to remake it. Also, I'll take any excuse to edit drum fills in shuffle feel. It's like cruise control for cool.
