In a post on Instagram on December 27th, 2022, Kristen Knight wrote: "I have been tirelessly rediscovering who I was before I allowed others to influence who I should have been. A reintroduction is in order. The creatrix was reborn three years ago, next year we unleash her on society. If you thought you knew me you have no idea. 'I'm not what you came here for…'" 

  

This is the year that the singer, songwriter, producer, artist, dancer and goddess Kristen Knight will rise like a glittering phoenix. With a new sound, dedication to her inner self and a radiating aura of defiance and confidence, 2023 is Knight's time to shine. 

  

Born and raised in Miami to artistic parents who were immersed in Miami's nightlife themselves, Kristen Knight was destined to feel a magnetic pull to the stage. Growing up in a house that was always full of music, one of her earliest memories is of sitting in the back of her aunt's car, as Lisa Stansfield's "All Around The World" blared out from the speakers. At that moment, when she was barely old enough to retain such a memory, Knight knew she wanted to sing for the rest of her life. 

  

Knight made further connections to music in her childhood while spending time in her mother's dance schools. With an innate understanding of movement and rhythm, she lived and breathed dance; working in the schools, training daily and performing professionally from a very young age. In dance classes, she'd listen to classical and popular music, while at school she went through the quintessential high school goth phase before falling in love with rock music. Today, Knight thinks of herself as a bit of a chameleon musically—she'd be just as happy on stage in a rock band as she is gracing the decks at clubs across the globe. 

  

Knight first fell in love with electronic music dancing at Miami's best clubs and at the Winter Music Conference each year. It was performing as a showgirl on South Beach, for some of the biggest artists in the world—think Swedish House Mafia, Sean Paul, P. Diddy—where things really began to click. "I remember dancing for Swedish House Mafia and it just hit different," she says. "It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before." After that formative party, Knight delved into her local scene, becoming familiar with the city's tech house artists and club favourites like Oscar G and Loco Dice. 

  

During her years dancing, Knight had always been quietly working on making music in the background. For a time, she was signed to a now-defunct Miami label and was working on an album. But the project fell stagnant and she felt frustrated by the limitations on her creative process. To take matters into her own hands, Knight spent nine months learning to produce, and as a byproduct, discovered she loved to DJ. From her years of being a showgirl, Knight had a solid understanding of how to get herself booked, so her career as a DJ picked up quickly. She'd travel all over Florida, her equipment living in the trunk of her car. A sign of her commitment to her craft, she'd take her monitors everywhere. "Everywhere I went I'd find blown monitors," she says. "I needed to have crystal clear sound." 

  

Following those relentless local tours, Knight has gone on to DJ around the world. Some of her most memorable shows include Culture Club Revelin in Dubrovnik (recorded and shared on SoundCloud, the set demonstrates Knight's ear for rolling tech house tunes with bags of groove, classic vocal house, and cheeky pop edits), Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos and shows in Tenerife and Osaka. Other notable shows include Croatian festivals Suncébeat and Defected, Pacha Ibiza and Amsterdam Dance Event. 

 

In recent years, Knight has found great sanctuary in producing, using time in the studio to delve deep and reflect on the trajectory of her career. What followed was a realisation that she had limited herself, allowing pressures from the male-dominated scene that surrounded her to restrict her artistry. For Kristen Knight is not only a DJ, she is a performer to her very core. 

 

After a period of intense discovery, rediscovery and experimenting, Knight has been delicately putting together the pieces of her own jigsaw to create a whole new self. It's been a powerful and cathartic process that has proved itself vital. The fruits of this time of healing and discovery will be released into the world this year: A new sound for Kristen Knight which allows her to be her purest form. Still with a love for thumping house music, yes, but with a renewed focus on writing pop-inflected songs from the heart, complete with soaring melodies, '80s synths, hypnotic and watery textures and so much more. Kristen Knight is coming into her own. 

  

As she follows her intuition and steps bravely along a new path, Knight wants to use her position in the industry to help create more space for women. She wants men to put in the work too, calling things out when necessary and demanding that the lineups they play on are inclusive. After years of placing herself in a box, Knight is rising up into the stratosphere, and she wants to take other women artists with her on the ride. "Living in this world, there's constantly so many eyes," she says. "And those eyes come with so much judgement. If I can help one person move past that feeling, by showing them I'm doing exactly what I want to do, then that is success for me."
