Geneva’s Opuswerk provides the second release on newly launched techno label Bipolar Disorder, with remixes from Inland (@counterchange-inland) and Antigone (@antigone).
Having appeared on Semantica and ARTS, as well as Dement3d (as HISS:1292 alongside François X), Swiss producer Opuswerk is a formidable name within today’s techno scene and has received regular support from names such as Dr Rubinstein, Daniel Avery, DVS1, Anthony Parasole, Peter Van Hoesen and Donato Dozzy.

Joining the release on remix duties, Counterchange founder Ed Davenport adopts his Inland guise alongside a separate outing from Parisian techno stalwart Antigone to form a solid four track techno package.

Syncopated drums and a rumbling low-end introduce the murky sounding ‘Extensum’ as scintillating synths increasingly permeate the mix. Inland reimagines it, introducing his recognisable polished percussion and deep atmospheric nuances. ‘Spatium’ uses otherworldly melodies and ominous effects for a mesmerising aesthetic from start to finish until Antigone’s energetic reinterpretation twists and distorts the original to conclude the release in style.

Sacrament of Penance is a coherent collection of cathartic sounds. A presentation of four separate tracks, in which each track expresses a different condition of the human psyche. ‘Unknown Pleasures’ stands out as an atmospheric adventure into the abyss, standing in stark contrast to the claustrophobic, convoluted and chaotic sounds of ‘Kinetic Energy’. ‘Meanwhile ‘Orizzonte degli eventi ‘ presents itself as a hypnotic and tense track, the tension of which is released by the relentless and merciless hard-hitting final track titled ‘Living Proof’.

Sacrament of penance 002 sees the welcome introduction of 3 new various artists. The opening track titled ‘Fictive Line’ is a labyrinthine collision of dark and atmospheric sounds which is enveloped in an aura of suspense. An aura of suspense that is answered for by the second track titled ‘Snara’ with it’s highly energetic and pulsating melodic characteristics. The third track titled ‘Circle Over My Head’ stands in stark contrast to this due to it’s heavy industrial overtones which contributes to a claustrophic feel. All of which is concluded by the explorative last track titled ‘Metempsychosis’ that is encapsulated by a state of tension created by a combination of dark and heard breakbeat sounds.

Norberto Lusso’s new EP titled ‘Alterate Energy’ begins with a captivating and enthralling track titled Aesthetic. The next track (Nrgy) follows a more forceful approach built on an eloquent combination of an uncompromising bass line coupled with melodic interludes. This relentless bass line is elaborated even further in the next track titled Sakerhets, which is distinguishable from the rest of the EP due to it’s bewildering and perturbing sounds which resonate throughout the track. His last track of the EP (Oxire) culminates his oppressive approach, in which the harshest sounds of the EP create a real sense of asphyxiation. On the contrary Mörker’s serene and vitalised remix of this track is dissimilar to the discordant and convoluted sounds of the rest of the EP.

The first track of Sacrament of Penance 003 (Krypt – URZ) exhibits a teasing interplay in which the constricting and hypnotic opening half of the track is later confronted with an illusive ambient interference. Yet track 2 (Tsibo - Lost Signal) stands in stark contrast, with it’s cataclysmic, cryptic and cacophonous sounds. These sentiments are advanced even further by the eerie and incomprehensible vocals in conjunction with the palpitating bass line of track 3 (Vendex - De Praestigiis Daemonum). The last track (Wavetable – Octane) neatly concludes the VA with an adventurous interchange of scintillating and dark sounds which embody the spectrum of divergent sounds on display in the first 3 tracks of the VA.

The pulsating and oscillating sounds of the opening track titled “Intangible Society” sets the tone for this EP, which is then taken a step further into the relentlessly dynamic and aggressive sounds of the next track, “Detached”. “Manboo Cafe” stands out due to it’s nuanced acidic tonality, while Yakkushi’s remix of “Intangible Society” is noteworthy for the way it substitutes the harsher sounds of the original track with cryptic overtones, resulting in a harmonious amalgamation of industrial and mystical sounds. Whilst Abstract Man’s remix of this track stimulates the track with even greater vigour with the inclusion of rhythmic and playful watery sounds.
