I Won't Stand In Your Way -maybees

The EP closes with its most vulnerable moment. Written from the perspective of Emma Morley from David Nicholls’ One Day, the song doubles as a reflection on Ellie’s own past relationships. Built around a persistent piano line and swelling harmonies, it charts the heartbreak of loving someone who cannot love you fully. Emma’s desperate plea - “Who will take me home?” - is answered by her own realisation: “You’ll fall apart again.” The final calm chord lands like a breath after emotional exhaustion.
Ellie shares: “Writing ‘One Day’ gave me the chance to speak through Emma’s voice, but also to acknowledge parts of my own past. It’s about the moment you realise love isn’t enough, and the bravery it takes to stop being someone’s secret.”

'Fungus' is about enabling toxic behaviour to the point it changes you and others, then holding on to bitterness and resentment that has grown as a result. 
'Fungus' will be one of five songs in an EP I intend to release in 2026 called 'Octopoda'. The project's focal point is holding on. Sometimes it is good to hold on and sometimes it is not. Sometimes you change yourself so that you can continue to hold on, but it comes at an expense. You might hold on to bad memories that make you feel bitter or sick, but you can't help it. Other times you hold on because it brings you happiness, for example a fond memory of somebody who is no longer with us.
I've called the EP  'Octopoda' because octopuses  are known for resilience, the ability to adapt, deceive, change shape and camouflage. To add to this, the obvious would be their tentacles and strong grip, which goes with the theme of holding on.

Welcome to my Soundcloud Page. I am a songwriter based in St Helens, a town in the Northwest of the UK.
You will find songs in a singer-songwriterly vein, written and recorded by me, taking in a range of musical genres,  alt/indie rock songs recorded by The (Now Legendary) Maybees in the 1990s, some classical sounding music by The Lucem Symphonia, as well as banging EDM/electronic tunes by Casaubon and a few mixes of a collaboration with Bentcousin,. Unknown Unknown is another alias I have used for one release and Firenze Anemones is a new project. Most recently, I have collaborated with Massachusetts composer Betsy Breitborde on The Ghosts of Christmas Past.
Whether it's plainly a demo or a painstakingly mastered recording, I hope you enjoy what you hear.
