space•cast 030 - Benk0 

A special edition of the space•cast from an underground hero in London, Benk0. Booker and resident of one of London’s most vital and beloved clubs, MOT UNIT 18 / 20. 

These clubs are the lifeblood of this thing we all love and it’s thanks to grafters like Trey (Benk0) that they continue to exist, burning the midnight oil weekend-in-weekend-out on a industrial estate near the Millwall football ground. 

The balance of programming smaller clubs in London is an impossibly fine one, staying true to your values and booking exciting artists whilst providing a platform for the plethora of amazing up and coming DJs in London. Playing at MOT is almost a rite of passage at this point and it’s Benk0 who fearlessly navigates the ship through some of the choppiest waters in clubland. 

So when the opportunity came to host a mix on the series from the man himself came, recorded at the club where he’s spent more nights than he’d care to remember over the last half decade, it was an easy yes. This set was an opening for XDB and you can tell from the classy selections, perfect pacing and smooth mixing that it was performed by someone with a detailed knowledge of the room who has respect and care of the best residents.

“this is a recording from a dj set i played last october at a small renegade party in the mammoth mountains called cws. i was invited by my friends r.downstairs and daniel to play, and daniel told me that if i did one thing before leaving la, it had to be experiencing the natural beauty of the site. i’m so glad i listened - it was easily one of the most stunning places i’ve ever been to, let alone played.

there was live projection mapping across the rocks by artist sophie baker, which subtly lit up the whole space and gave it this surreal, futuristic, almost otherworldly feeling. it was one of those moments where everything just aligned: open-air amongst nature, an intimate yet lively crowd, incredible visuals, and a really free, intuitive energy on the decks.

technically, the mix isn’t perfect, but i quite like the imperfections - they reflect the rawness and freedom of playing without overthinking.”

Known for her authentic and highly engaged presence both on and off the dancefloor, her constant exploration and immersion in vibrant cities and diverse dancefloors have shaped her unique, seductive style, spanning trance, prog, psy, techno, tech house, and dubstep. As a DJ, ANNX has solidified her reputation as a dynamic and versatile artist and a staple on the UK and European club and festival circuit. Notable appearances include sets at UNFOLD, SUB:SYSTEM, Hors-Sol Paris, Macadam, Shambala, and more.

Beyond her captivating performances, ANNX is deeply committed to bettering the music scene. As a community builder, connector, and meticulous curator, she brings people together through the universal language of music, co-creating parties and platforms across the UK and beyond that showcase her creative prowess and establish her as a key figure in London’s psychedelic music circuit.

In 2021, she co-founded WHOMP, a not-for-profit party in London alongside Lora Mipsum, which focuses on platforming emerging and established FLINTA artists and allies. This initiative has raised over £18.5k (approximately $36k AUD) for a range of charities, including Medical Aid for Palestine, JMB Educational Fund, LGBTQ+ Asylum Support, The Outside Project, The Sameer Project, and Ukraine Aid Relief. More recently, ANNX embarked on a new venture that further stretches her creative vision: perspectives•, a collaborative project with lighting designer Nicole Gordon. « Heading to Nest on a rainy Sunday afternoon with no idea of what was to come. Upon entering the mini warehouse in the backyard of a maison de maître in Forest, Brussels, I was instantly absorbed into their magical queer realm. Had the honor and joy to close their very first edition. Seized the occasion to play emotional yet sensual trance music, just the way I love it. 

I’ve been loving the epicycle podcast series’ approach to dance music, that is intentional yet playful. Thought this live recording kind of matches this vision, so I’m super grateful to be able to share it on here. Thank you Kim <3 »
