So, I'm attending the Defected Croatia festival in August and received an email from the organizers stating that they were reserving some opening sets for attendees. We just needed to submit an hour-plus mix, appropriate for a daytime set. Squeeee! 

This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play overseas at the 20th anniversary party celebrating my favorite record label. Was it a coincidence that I had just purchased a digital DJ controller a few weeks prior that had me feeling really excited about getting back to DJing? It just felt like the stars were aligning and I couldn't think of a better opportunity to get back in the ring after a long hiatus. 

I crammed for several sleepless nights to get the mix together and tried not to panic when I couldn't figure out how to export it from the new digital setup, but Pioneer tech support came to the rescue and I got the mix submitted just in time!

Cut to a few days later when I received a congratulatory email from the Managing Director of Defected Records stating that I had made the first round cut and was short-listed for the opportunity out of over 300 mixes submitted. My heart was racing as I repeated in my head, "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god..." and tears squeezed out of the corners of my eyes.

So who knows if I'll make the final cut, but I am beyond flattered to be in the running and I can think of no better validation than from the record label that I've held in the highest regard for 20 years. It was just the confidence boost I needed. 

With that: Atlanta, I'm coming for you.

I Love The Build Up

When mixing, I often ask myself: 

"What would Marcel Duchamp do?" 

Which probably explains why I never post mixes online - live is the only true way to play. But I do love the build up. Anything goes, from fabulous underground disco - the best kind - to wonky, fucked up house'n'tech/no - the only kind. 

Unreleased edits, remixes, exclusive tracks, upfront promos. Oh, and that most difficult of genres: "new stuff that's not so new anymore". Everything tweaked, layered up and twisted, handcrafted & 100 % organic. If you like it, please like it, comment or share - it's much appreciated.

Casbah 73 - I Love The Build Up

2020 was a tough one. I won’t bother to go back through it. You know it right?

Personally one of the bitterest blows for me was not being able to travel to my beloved Brasil and play at Mareh festival in Bahia over NYE this year. I caught Covid instead and stayed home to recover.

But to celebrate my love for all things Brasil, which is currently like many countries suffering very bad times due to the pandemic, and in particular my love for my Mareh family, I made a new mix of Brasilian music. I hope that the music will help relieve some pressure during these difficult times, as music can, and add a positive note of hope for better times ahead we can share together.
