Helios - Halving the Compass

This track portrays the sunburst in the heart you feel when you greet a loved one at the airport after too long apart. Perhaps, also, it is about the spiritual stage of unconditional welcome to life experiences, regardless of whether they are good or challenging.

The music turned out quite differently to where I thought it was headed. I love the unexpected journeys that music can lead us on. In particular I like how the bass line from the verse becomes the melody of the chorus in fugue-like fashion.

The brass is a mix of sampled and synth, and is my little tribute to the majestic sound of the late great Vangelis.

Let me know if you think this would benefit from being edited into a shorter piece.

This is the fourth and final track from my new album Notes On Belonging coming out on 27th October 2017! This track is the place where I find space and meaning in the form of repetition of three notes. It explores the notion of belonging to a place, physically and spiritually, and a sense of journeying to a place called home. It's both tinged with joy and a sense of longing, of nearly being there but not quite yet. The track explores a sort of counterpoint, where instruments go in and out of phase to emphasise this nearness of things. They delicately tow the line of independent improvisation to colliding in pattern, most noticeable at the end of the track. I wanted to explore themes of indiviuality and freedom in the piece with the hope that inevitably we'd join forces at times. A Look Back

I was excited to see this wonderful collection of little piano vignettes released by Nils, one of my favorite piano players and people. The simplicity of these pieces and the honesty I feel in the music communicated a sense of ease and exploration that I immediately connected with.  This is my rework of a beautiful passage contained in the song "Re".

Peter Broderick's dear sister Heather Woods Broderick crafted this wonderful cover version of his song 'Inside Out There' from his latest album 'These Walls Of Mine'. In his own words:

"How happy I was when my lovely sister sent me a cover version of my song 'Inside Out There' (from last year’s 'These Walls Of Mine') a couple weeks ago!

For one thing, I never imagined this would be a song that someone would cover… but ohhhh do I smile when I hear her sing those words . . . and it looks fuckin’ beautiful . . . all of a sudden it feels like much more of a song than it ever was! She took that little bastard of a song turned it into something magical.
