Khruangbin are the Texas based three-piece that make psychedelic, acid jazz infused Thai funk music. Oh yes. Comprised of Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Johnson, the trio have supported Bonobo across his USA tour and even had a track included in his Late Night Tales mix last year.LNT's artist label Night Time Stories subsequently signed them up, with single 'A Calf Born In Winter' released 19th May and an album in the works. Providing the soundtrack to your dreams and entering i-D's mid-week wind down session for their first ever mix, these are the psychedelic sounds of Khruangbin. Drift off.

"This is our very first mix tape. As such, we wanted to draw on original inspirations to each of us individually in the band, as well as together. In this we pull on Acid Jazz, Gospel, Brazilian Funk and Psych, Thai & Japanese Pop/Rock, "farm rock", Dub, Funk, and R&B to hopefully create a mix that is varied in style yet cohesive in feel. 10TRAX #041 comes from Olefonken, a norwegian producer based in London. With two releases this year, Olefonken is having a good 2016, however he’s not a newcomer. In 2013 he released a track, Ubuntu Tutu, alongside an EP with the band hubbabubbaklubb; and in 2014 he was selected for the Tokyo edition of the prestigious RBMA.
 
Following the path of other norwegian producers, his tracks are influenced by spacey disco, how ever his mixes offer a greater range. This 10TRAX presents a plethora of tunes that go from big pop names like ELO and Stevie Wonder and cult tracks like “Le Troublant Témoignage De Paul Martin”. The Norwegian DJ tells us “these 10TRAX are a selection of some old time favorites for lazy sunday afternoons, in other words something to hang your hat on! It also contains a preview of our next release with hubbabubbaklubb coming out later this year on Snorkel Records. Hope you guys like it.”

10TRAX number 43 comes from Tom Schaek aka Diepvries. The Belgian has shared with us a great mix which he describes as: “the stuff i listen to when i'm working, some of my favorite spiritual jams, cosmic jazz, rainforest dub, buddha rock, japanese psychedelia but nothing too crazy.” For us it’s a mix full of good musical taste and experience, a real psychedelic trip through different sounds with soft and coherent transitions. 

Tom tells us that: “I consider myself a retired dj. I rarely play out anymore (kids and stuff, you know) but still really into... [I am] always doing a new mix and most of the time I trash it but sometimes it just comes to me like a revelation, those are the best. At the moment I'm working on an 8 hour ambient mix. The idea is that you can either play it for a full work day if you want to completely zone out from your coworkers. Or you can play it really quietly while you're sleeping and maybe something interesting will happen.” 

Diepvries is also the founder of Flexx records which was particularly active during from 2005 to 2010 with a healthy amount of releases. Currently the label is on standby but Tom is considering rebooting it one day, hopefully sooner than later!

STATUE is a live percussion based dance project, the brainchild of Melbourne drummer Tom Gould. Over the past five years he has honed his craft in cult Melbourne bands NO ZU and Worlds End press but now greets the dance world under the moniker STATUE. After featuring in last years Beats In Space -  best of the year list with his debut 12", his second EP ‘Monument' is a reflection of the human and a testament to dance floors both indoor and out. MONUMENT further establishes STATUE as a fixture in Melbourne’s dance music culture, constructed for both warm afternoons and the sweaty early hours of Australian summer.

The EP traverses multiple tempos, creating a world of warm percussive dance floor odysseys arriving parched and thirsty for more at it’s aural peak, Monument. The expedition ends with an expansive remix by Disco Halal king pin and recent ESP Institute alumni, Moscoman.

Nancy Azzurro comes out of nowhere. Well, that’s not entirely true—Lovefingers met her about 10 years ago on the beach near her home on the island of Sardinia—but in terms of our musical orbit, she is a very private artist, creating only the purest music, straight from the heart. These three gorgeous songs were produced during her young adulthood and would become secret weapons for a handful of DJs she’d meet over the following years. Still standing the test of time today, they’re now finally seeing a proper release. Side-A’s Grace invites us into Nancy’s world where Disco and House collide—the live drums, percussion and bassline hold down a blanket of synth strings and wah-wahs. Halfway through this epic enters a piano hook of the highest order, an emotional rush that brings together everything we love on the dancefloor, guaranteed to induce goosebumps. On side-B, she rounds out the release with the dreamlike, percussive and Yugo-tinged Illustrations & The Large, and closes with the title track Teen Bee, a loopy cowbell-driven dive into the deep, filled with luscious sweeping chords and meandering keys. The ESP Institute is honoured to close out 2016 (one seriously heavy year) with such a beautiful and cohesive release. Thank you and goodnight.
