In February we were joined by Anya and Izaak of the mighty @loveshadowdjs on our Worldwide FM show. Having released one of our favourite records of 2021, their eponymously named debut LP on Music From Memory, it was a joy to have them pull out some gems from their collection in the second hour of the show.

This month Andy Pye from balearic Social joins me. Andy is a good friend, musical font of knowledge and all round good guy so its great to welcome him back to the ReFrame for his second round, last one was clsoe to a decade ago now... wowzers!

The ReFrame provides two hours of cosmic disco balearica with a dash of 80s swerveballs and a chunk of ReFrame edits. „When are you going to take the rest of your records with you?“ my dad kept asking me for 18 years (since 2006). As a child growing up in the bavarian countryside I discovered 80s music through my very good friend and dj „Electronic Biets“. His strong passion for all kinds of music, led him to a mix of I-F „live in new york“ from 2001. He passed it on to me when I was 18 years old in 2002. i did not expect that this live recording would change my life forever. This mix was full of perfectly mixed and selected Italo Disco tracks. I found myself listening to the it for half a year, day in day out. I would come home from work, park the car in front or my parents house and listen to the mix in the car till it was finished. This was the level of appreciation I had for this music. By that time, I didn’t know what kind of music it was. It took some time and a lot of research till I found out, that the genre was called Italo Disco. From there on I started buying everything labeled „Italo Disco & 80s“. Luckily, I had a good payed job which made me finance all this random buys from all over europe. So I ended up with lots of records I did not know. All I was looking for, was that special Italo Disco sound, but of course I also came across New Beat, Dark Wave, NDW and all sorts of great music from the 70s and 80s. But back then I had a rather narrow focus, so when I moved to Berlin in 2005, I left all those „Non Italo“ records at my parents house. Finally, last year, I took the time to go through all the records, I left behind in 2005 and rediscovered so many nice tracks. Even some cool 90s techno stuff on 33rpm. I even found records that I bought again later on without knowing that I have them already. So I decided to make a mix with my „forgotten“ records.
Besides that, it was also an interesting challenge to be limited to a smaller amount of records (30-40) to create a mix from. And here you go with Part 1.

“When I was asked about the mix around a year ago, I already had some records that I wanted to play in mind. My intent was to showcase some swedish sounds, but of course I couldn’t just keep to that. Like the australian record for example, or the fake reggae track in the middle. 

My goal with the mix was to create that sunny feeling that, especially us people in scandinavia, long for during the harsh winter months. And I think that I succeeded with my blend of dub, jamaican grooves, hiphop, UK street soul records, and of course a token italo track.”

Although leaving behind only a small repertoire, sadly cut short by an early and unexpected passing, what we have left as evidence of his deep dedication to the pleasures of music is so unique and designed with such charming consistency, that when listened to, can only be Zecky’s selection.


Since the late 2000’s we studied the few mixes we could get our hands on obsessively, to the point where for example: we will never be able to hear Pats and Pat “Tobago” without the expectation of “City Lights” to be mixed in next, courtesy of the 2008 Ebisu Bar Jam recording. To us, Zecky became a sub genre of music — "Zecky style tracks" — something in the realms of what we might consider as Balearic, but still somehow blurring the borders of acceptable Italo-disco, and then coming way out of left field with something contemporary like Simply Red...and somehow it all made perfect sense. A lot of these tracks may seem obvious now, but keep in mind this was mid 2000’s, a lot of these tracks were still not known, discogs was not what it is today: contextually, the calliber of his research was heavy. Imagine living in a time when the idea of what a good DJ should be doing is minimal techno yet you’re a Japanese guy going to Italy to look for completely expired Italo material, one can only imagine the facial expressions and dialogues that might have emerged between Italian record store owners and Zecky throughout his digging travels.


The role that talent plays in the DJ "profession" can sometimes feel fuzzy, especially in the post social media/CDJ era. In our humble opinions however, listening to Zecky’s oeuvre gave this mystery a good amount of inspiring clarity. The aesthetic precision of his selection supported by his simple but flawless mixing created compositions so striking that the mixes became new stories or soundtracks to beautiful movies no one had ever seen before. It really felt like he was making something larger than the music he was using to compose these moments. A common (and disturbing) cliche one often hears when people go about describing a DJ’s work is the idea of being a “story teller”. To us Zecky genuinely put forth this idea on a meaningful level, his stories were some of the nicest of all.

We learned so much from Zecky.


Thank you for the music and happy birthday — Zecky would have been 54 today.

Sol is a DJ, collector, and graphic designer in Seoul, South Korea. She plays music from the '90s, such as balearic, downtempo, house, and techno. From a DJ's point of view, when people think of Sol, she wants to be recognized as a person who does not think of a genre of music and gives various genres of music to people.

Here we go again with another travel mix. This time only records I found during my workation in Lisbon. All music from Portugal. 🇵🇹 From Algarve Boogie to Azul Synth. This brings back some very nice memories to me, of going to every record store in the city, having drinks with new friends in the streets and dancing through lunch nights. I hope you enjoy this ride through Portuguese music as much as I do. 🌊🎶💙
