Samosa has had a fine year in 2020 and still has time to squeeze out one more vital disco offering. Following on from afrocentric Souldynamic and C. da Afro releases for the 19th volume of their VA compilation, this time drafted in is Mexican producer The Funk District who serves up four dazzling gems. High energy sounds, 70s film references, Latin flair and cosmic disco all feed into these tracks which are packed with bristling good times, feel good grovers and plenty of hands in the air moments. For us, 'La Rapina' is straight Latin dance floor gold that takes the EP's top slot.

Claptone steps out of the shadows once again with ‘The Music Got Me’, an exciting new offering from the mysterious enigma with the golden mask. 'Music Got Me' by Claptone is an authorised cover version of 'Music Got Me' by Visual which has been approved and licensed by Unidisc the rights holder.
As you would expect of new Claptone, 'The Music Got Me’ is destined for late nights and packed clubs all over, such are the enchanting powers of this otherworldly beast. However this new offering goes further still. The achingly cool 80s NYC disco/postpunk flavour combines with a distinct Chicago bassline to offer an exciting glimpse of the eclectic, indie vibe of his debut artist album.

Claptone’s last two releases ‘No Eyes’ and ‘Ghost’ both topped the Beatport charts, the latter of which featured Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (a collaboration we can only assume was arranged by some sort of séance). They went on to become enormous smashes on Berlin house label Exploited, earning the plaudits of the biggest DJs and setting Claptone off on a non-stop DJ tour across the globe.

It’s remarkable that the masked man has still found time in his tour schedule to deliver big remixes for the likes of Metronomy, The Pet Shop Boys, Rüfüs, Klaxons and Gregory Porter (which is currently No.1 in Beatport's Deep House charts).

2015 will also see Claptone embark on a run of ‘Immortal Live’ dates, a unique A/V experience which brings together a full set of Claptone creations (MIAMI ULTRA FESTIVAL – 29/3, BRUSSELS PIAS NITES – 4/4, GERMANY MELT! FESTIVAL 17/7, LONDON SW4 FESTIVAL – 29/8).

After adding new drum layers, fills and a new groove to the original, our Vintage People version turns into a 104 bpm r&b disco ballad.

Masterworks Music mastermind 80's Child unleashes the third volume of his Masterworks compilations. This is a two-part vinyl release with the first part featuring The Funk District hailing from Cancun, who kicks off the A side with "The Funky Joint". He gets a good ol' time shuffle going before handing it over to Parisian Oldchap for a proper low-slung boogie in the form of "To The Top". On the flip, Godfather of the western Australian dance scene Dr. Packer gets down with a wicked edit on the late night sexiness of "Your Big Chance" and fellow Mexican Hotmood goes out on a high note with smokin' hot vocal number "Raw Dance".

Launched in Berlin in 2011, this fourth edition marks Das Scharf’s first solo intervention on the Beirut arts scene, to be followed up by a program of events running throughout the spring/summer of 2013.

DAS SCHARF is constantly on the lookout for fresh, unique, international artists with major talent. We collect the best-of-the-best video material from cool cities like Beirut, Berlin, Barcelona, New York and Tokyo.

WHAT'S ZAP!20.04-DIAMOND SETTER

Automatic Tasty (Jonny Dillon) has been away from Central Processing Unit for five years now, releasing on labels such as AC Records and Furthur Electronix in the intervening time. However, new EP The Future Is Not What It Used To Be shows that the chemistry between label and artist is still in good nick by offering up four tracks of contemplative electro-boogie.

While the preceding CPU/Automatic Tasty drop may be 2015’s The Life Parochial, The Future Is Not What It Used To Be actually has more in common with Sentimentalist’s Choice, Automatic Tasty’s CPU debut which came out back in 2013. This is not due to a huge stylistic shift - all three records bring together classic electro, techno and boogie sounds to create charming and melodious tracks - but more to do with the tone of the record. You see, while The Life Parochial was a squelchy machine-funk delight, The Future Is Not What It Used To Be is a more pensive affair befitting its title.

This isn’t to say that The Future Is Not What It Used To Be is a muted EP. Far from it - this record contains some of the most gorgeous electro joints you’ll hear all year. The vibe is established on its eponymous opening jam, a vocoder-laced production pitched somewhere between the more ruminative tunes on Posthuman’s 2018 LP Mutant City Acid and contemporary boogie acts such as Funkineven/Steven Julien and Galaxians. The track is made by the beautiful, bittersweet timbre of its synths, and these are maintained on following number ’Romance In The Old Country’. Given the offbeat skip in its groove and sunset-glow ruefulness of the keys, ’Romance In The Old Country’ is a cut which invokes the instrumentals of Jessy Lanza LPs - and even (whisper it) a little Sade.

The Future Is Not What It Used To Be is an EP of evocative track titles, but there may be none more accurate than first B-side ‘Rising Sun’. Here, Automatic Tasty tweaks the wistfulness of the A-side cuts into something more uplifting. While a thoughtful quality remains in ‘Rising Sun’s soft synths and skittering 808s, the track is driven by the exuberant energy of the ‘Woo! Yeah!’ drum break to become the sort of tune you drop as dawn begins to break over the rave. ‘Rising Sun’s afterglow falls over the closing track ‘Adventures In The World Of Becoming’, a steady IDM-electro pulse that channels the spirit of Aphex Twin’s seminal Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

‘The future is not what it used to be - no past, no memory’. With this robo-voiced intonation, Automatic Tasty returns to Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit with four moving, poignant machine-funk tracks.

Being the couple of southwestern carrotcrunchers we are, we were pleased as punch when asked by amigos Heavenly to work as hired hands for fellow (and acclaimed) wild westcountry musician Katy J Pearson, better known to us as K-WEST. She’s the potent kind of contemporary talent we really dig.
