"When I get asked to do mixes I often take that as an opportunity to put together a selection of my favourite pieces from a specific era, genre or composer. In this case I compiled a number of my favourite Japanese electronic tracks as I have been listening to a lot of that stuff for the past year or so."

Throughout the last decade Ulrich Schnauss has produced three albums which perfectly captured his vision of taking the 90's 'Shoegaze' aesthetic - very uncool at the time as we'll discuss below - and placing it into an electronic context. With the new album 'A Long Way To Fall' Ulrich felt the need to change and explore new avenues. And it's another beauty.

On the 3rd July, German born musician and producer Ulrich Schnauss will play an extra special live A/V show at Electrowerkz. We decided that this was the perfect time to have him create his Ransom Note Mix and we caught up with him to find out a bit more about his background, his mix and his general thought on music;

The downtime jam session this week comes from 23-year-old English beatmaker and producer Submerse aka Rob Orme whose skill set sees him navigate between hip hop, electronica instrumentals, footwork and beyond. With a multitude of musical influences, Submerse’s music has shimmered with flecks of J-Pop, drum & bass, 90s slow jams, and sweet r&b, always containing a subtle referential tone towards his love of Japan. With his recent releases on Apollo and Project: Mooncircle, the Tokyo based beatsmith’s beautiful blend of sounds has had us desperate to get him in as part of the Slumber Sessions family. Kick back, and drift off into the sounds of Submerse.

Back in 1975 the children of Scarfolk primary school released their own 45rpm record to commemorate their teacher Mrs Payne who disappeared in 1973, but whose body was found encased inside one of the thirteen ancient standing stones just outside Scarfolk. Proceeds from the sale of the single went toward the building of a new community coven and affiliated gift shop.

The Elektrik Karousel is the new album from The Focus Group, the alias of graphic designer and co-manager of Ghost Box records Julian House, and it’s the most sonically rich, enjoyable and psychedelic so far. It’s an evolution of the Cut-Up experiments of the earlier albums where House developed a musical style that mirrored his collaged design work. 

On Elektrik Karousel House, with help in the studio from Broadcast, weaves his samples into a rich tapestry of electronics, fuzzed guitar and processed exotic instrumentation together with fractured skipping rhythms and submerged melodies.

The Black Hole by Kurmyshev 

Him: 
- Sweetheart... I need to tell you something... Can you make us some tea? Thank you. Take a seat... Oh, it's very hot...

Her:
 -  What's happened? What do you want to tell me?

Him: 
- Our research group is leaving for a remote planet. We are supposed to take some samples and bring them back. I will be leading the mission.

Her:
 - Do you have to? Please stay! I'm begging you!

She couldn't hold back tears anymore, he couldn’t find the right words... He understands that this mission is a way to nowhere...

Every day they talk. He tells her stories about infinite and incredibly beautiful Universe, about countless stars. He ends every story with words of love and a promise to come back soon. She weeps every night — heavy thoughts are haunting her.

Time flies... He is a lot like a boy again — enthusiastic, passionate about stars. Thoughts of home diminish, and less place in his heart is now left for her. She is suffering, she is growing older...

Space! We know so little about it. It seems magnificent and yet alien... Something terrible came across their way, leaving the crew's hearts gripped with horror. A planet is vanishing right before their eyes — a black hole is about to consume it...

Him:
 - We must get away from here now! Move!

The engines are running at full power but it's too late... They are trapped... The immense object is always hungry...

He recalls home, the warmth of her hands, how she was begging him to stay...
"How is she without me? How is she going to be without me?"

A nightmare interrupted her nap... "What is this pain? Why can't I stop crying? He is gone..."
