Like her namesake, Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Beta Librae has shone brighter than ever over the last couple of years.

Taking her moniker from the brightest star in the zodiac constellation of Libra, she cut her teeth DJing regularly at Bossa Nova Civic Club after moving to Brooklyn from her home town of Spring Hill in Kansas. 

It was at this club that she also started her Technofeminism parties alongside friend, fellow DJ and Discwoman co-founder Umfang, a monthly event that showcases emerging talent, and now she can also be found in the booth for Nowadays as a resident.

Her skills extend to production, with her first release landing on the ever on point 1080p back in 2015, followed by two more albums for Lillerne Tape Club and Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery’s Incensio, as well as a couple of EPs for Physical Therapy's Allergy Season. Also lending her touch on the remix for Yaeji in 2018, her most recent remix effort, of Cleveland's Gamma, is about to see a release on Amsterdam's Kalahari Oyster Cult.

Stepping up for this week's Ransom Note mix, Beta Librae weaves together the sounds she's become synonymous with as both a producer and a DJ; spaced-out ambience, minimal techno and deep, rhythmic house cuts...

Now based in the Bay Area, @sisgirlpgh has become a staple of the US queer underground via the close-knit and musically multifaceted Pittsburgh dance music community and through unforgettable sets at festivals like Gays Hate Techno and Honcho Campout. A co-founder of Pittsburgh's MESH, alongside ChadKid and newly minted resident Calin, and a resident of Kosmetik in San Francisco, their sets traverse many tempos within a dreamy, bassy, and effervescent palette. Their mix is a perfect backdrop as we lament the absence of those queer summer moments in the woods due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bouncing between melancholic reflection and joyful reminiscence.

"The tracks I put into this mix have been some I have been sitting on for a while and wanted to put together. When quarantine because of COVID started I wanted to create something with energy but still something on a tempo that wouldn’t necessarily be played on a dance floor.

The mix is recorded all around 100 BPM but still brings energy so it’s great for a mellow time or something different. The tracks are new plus some that I’ve had tucked away for a time like this. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve put together and I hope it brings people a lot of comfort and happiness during this time."

For Walking & Falling October's installment, we bring you a mix from Brooklyn-based DJ Lychee. This recording is a set they performed at Nowadays :)

A DJ, writer, and event organizer, Lychee (they/them) runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series, annual zine, and occasional event platform focused on how dancefloors have shaped artists. Most recently, they released a zine, "Behind the Party", focusing on the experience of workers in the dance music industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a very slow build of industrial and ambient tones, Lychee weaves their way through tunes effortlessly. By the second half they pick up the pace, having us longing for the dance floor with bouncy techno grooves. It's a collage of sounds that we hope you all will dig!
