This mix was put together with the same rigorous methodology as I record any mix. I pulled some tracks together, headed into the studio, hit record and then pretended I was in a sweaty basement with a crowd of people going absolutely wild. In actuality it was just me and my two cats looking decidedly unimpressed, but they don't know anything about techno so who gives a fuck what they think.

Relive the highs and flows of a club closing through @minor-science's evocative In Session mix.

In his words: "I had the pleasure of playing a few closing sets in the weeks before lockdown, including at Panorama Bar for the Whities party. Each time I play one I learn a lot about the specific kind of flow & energy which works at the end of the night. By the time I started preparing this mix all my gigs had been cancelled for the foreseeable future, and it seemed appropriate to record something with an ‘ending’ feeling. So the mix is intended as a kind of condensed closing set. It’s more linear than my usual studio mixes, and the structure of it is different: the first half catches that end-of-peaktime energy, then the second half funnels it into something more introspective."

Like her namesake, Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Beta Librae has shone brighter than ever over the last couple of years.

Taking her moniker from the brightest star in the zodiac constellation of Libra, she cut her teeth DJing regularly at Bossa Nova Civic Club after moving to Brooklyn from her home town of Spring Hill in Kansas. 

It was at this club that she also started her Technofeminism parties alongside friend, fellow DJ and Discwoman co-founder Umfang, a monthly event that showcases emerging talent, and now she can also be found in the booth for Nowadays as a resident.

Her skills extend to production, with her first release landing on the ever on point 1080p back in 2015, followed by two more albums for Lillerne Tape Club and Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery’s Incensio, as well as a couple of EPs for Physical Therapy's Allergy Season. Also lending her touch on the remix for Yaeji in 2018, her most recent remix effort, of Cleveland's Gamma, is about to see a release on Amsterdam's Kalahari Oyster Cult.

Stepping up for this week's Ransom Note mix, Beta Librae weaves together the sounds she's become synonymous with as both a producer and a DJ; spaced-out ambience, minimal techno and deep, rhythmic house cuts...

Brush your teeth. Wait for the weekend. Peek out the window. 

This mix is built around the time-dilating quality of loops, inspired by the kind of “holding pattern” we’re all in. Full tracks, isolated phrases, processed recordings, and original sonic material. The initial inspiration for the mix came from Wonja’s re-discovery of a PC game from her childhood, and its unique sound design. Loops of in-game ambience, engineered by Bay Area composer Brenda Hutchinson, appear throughout the mix. 
 
The mix itself is a loop, beginning and ending in the same setting. Play it on repeat or for any amount of time.
