Thievery Corporation have grown very strong roots in the Rivera Maya over the years, but have never had a chance to play a liveshow in the area. DAY ZERO is proud to be presenting the first live show in Playa del Carmen with Thievery Corporation.   

"This is a mix of some of my favorite tripped out, orchestral, brazilian/latin, and cinematic music from the past, way before the current electronic music explosion. There’s many beautiful gems from all corners of the globe, these are the kinds of sounds that inspired Eric and myself when we started Thievery Corporation. Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

Tronic Podcast 155 with Ben Sims

London producer Will Archer is better known as Slime. We’re not sure why, and the name certainly isn’t very indicative of his sound, but we like it. Obsessed by electronic music and the idea that the possibilities are endless, the multi-instrumentalist makes unexpected RnB that instantly takes you to a hazy place peppered with sexy sax. If you haven’t already, we highly recommend you check out his Dan Brereton-directed video for Hotdog in which, yes, a giant hotdog man walks around a lonely village by himself. As we await the release of his debut album Company, due to drop 14th August via Weird World, take time out and treat yourself to Slime’s Slumber Session. With a melange of classical and laid back classic rock, Cast yourself Away with Alan Silvestri’s iconic movie theme and soothe yourself to sleep to the comforting crackle of a record player.

Sling & Samo are the exiting duo behind the Born Free record label which resides in Stockholm. Over the last few years the pair have been releasing a vast array of weird, wonderful, oddball music: some built for the dancefloor and some certainly not. The pair are colourful characters who don't take themselves or what they do too seriously. Samo is also well known in his own right as a producer and dj having released music for the likes of LIES, The Trilogy Tapes and Public Possession but together with Sling the pair enter a new realm of musical exploration. We asked them to record a mix for us.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (29th April) We welcome Guy Andrews in Hour 1 following the release of his album 'Our Spaces'  on Houndstooth last month. He's had previous releases on Hotflush and Hemlock Recordings, plus a collaboration with Masayoshi Fujita as a joint release with Erased Tapes for Record Store Day. This and some of the album tracks feature in his mix alongside music from Halves, ANOHNI, Mogwai, Vessel and Alva Noto. He had this to say;

"The mix is based around a collection of tunes that I've been listening to a lot both recently and over the past few years. I wanted to capture the more ambient, experimental and post-rock end of my music taste, mixing together timeless classics with some newer tracks I've discovered. Regardless of how old some of the tunes are, they all continue to influence me on both a musical and personal level."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th May) Roly Porter takes charge of Hr 1 this week. He began his career as part of Vex’d alongside Kuedo, releasing two albums, Degenerate and Cloud Seed, both on Planet Mu, along with several singles on Bristol’s Subtext imprint. He later returned to Subtext under his own name to begin a solo project, releasing 'Aftertime' and 'Life Cycle of a Massive Star'. Earlier this year he released Third Law on TriAngle and 2 tracks from the album feature in his mix alongside music from Surgeon, Kowton, Amnesia Scanner, Yearning Kru and Aisha Devi.

~ About The Story ~

Everybody has a little bit of the sun and moon in them. Everybody has a little bit of man, woman, and animal in them. Darks and lights in them. Everyone is part of a connected cosmic system. Part earth and sea, wind and fire, with some salt and dust swimming in them. We have a universe within ourselves that mimics the universe outside. None of us are just black or white, or never wrong and always right. No one. No one exists without polarities. Everybody has good and bad forces working with them, against them, and within them.

"This mix was inspired by my friends, the people I am most closely connected to. I wanted to create something calm and beautiful, to offer some brief respite and escape. I might compile a tracklist at some point, but for now please just disconnect, zone out, and enjoy the mix. It was recorded in one take at home in Tokyo, October 2016. On this week's show we pay tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan on the anniversary of his death and play Harry Manx (pictured) as a back to back for the first time on The Blues Session. Blending weirdo ambience alongside dusty bass and beyond they have crafted a place for themselves amidst the sprawling, monster of a city. Their music is as much a soundtrack for the dystopian city as it is for individual listening. This is something which translates well beyond their own productions and into their spectacularly crafted mixes, which you are about to discover all for yourself. 

We have long since been fans of the duo. It is a pleasure to have them contribute a truly original mix to the alternative series.

Recondite Live Set for Absurd Recordings

Expect the unexpected. That's the philosophy Rotterdam-based DJ mad miran promotes in her DJ sets. A regular on the Dutch capital's mainstay Red Light Radio and a face behind the counter at the infamous Clone record shop, Miran has fast become one of the country's most promising DJs. 

Although she only played her first DJ set in a club a couple of years ago, she's already landed a residency at Trouw successor De School and become part of the Strange Sounds From Beyond family, seeing her name spread like wildfire and lead to a string of gigs across Europe.

We invited her to dive into her record bag for us and the result is 80 minutes of leftfield electro, raw breaks and introspective electronica. Enter into the crazy world of mad miran...

mad miran: The 'Wednesday Alternative' Mix

Amsterdam has been graced with a fearsome array of fabulous selectors and disc jockeys in recent times, the city is abuzz with experimental music and talent. 

Orpheu The Wizard has been a pivotal figure in the development of the scene, crucially helping to nurture new faces through his key role as a co founder of Redlight radio - a distinctive platform which has acted as a gateway and an open door to a new wave of music, producers and dj's. 

His own background is well versed, he's earnt his stripes and played the long game building a respectable array of musical knowledge and selective talent which he uses to entice and delight crowds across Europe and beyond. Eclectic, far reaching and multi purpose - his sets often run wild across a sprawling spectrum of sound. 

This year he will play at Love International festival, an appearance which should not be missed.

Orpheu The Wizard: The Ransom Note Mix

Step back, this is a big one. 

Across the past couple of decades there have been very few who can attest as much influence as that of Joakim, a singular producer who has been charted as an influential figure by many of the leading producers and disc jockeys in the present.

The French outsider has amassed a notorious reputation for his eclectic style as a disc jockey and producer having released music on the likes of Versatile, Kitsuné Music, Life And Death, Crosstown Rebels and beyond. As the founder behind Tigersushi Records and Crowdspacer he has been responsible for leading a new generation of talent into the dance and has played a key role in the future development of dance and electronic music. 

As an individual his own take on music is wide and vast, not one to shy away from the alternative or experimental he has done well to channel a sprawling array of style, genre and sound across his own lengthy career and in all honesty Joakim continues to surprise and intrigue with delight. 

A Dj's dj, he is a firm favourite and we welcome him as part of the series.
