Medicine 8 are back. The project of brothers Liam and Luke May started around 30 years ago in their South London stomping ground.

Their sound, which blended electro and acid house with rock sensibilities, saw the pair release a healthy string of records all the way through to the late noughties, along with a handful of remixes for the likes of Orbital, Manic Street Preachers, Nirvana and pop royalty Kylie Minogue.

Medicine 8 has been lying dormant over the last decade but Liam and Luke have been keeping themselves busy in the interim. As well as running Trashmouth Records - the label responsible for bringing you Fat White Family, MEATRAFFLE and Warmduscher - the pair have been keeping the hardware dream alive with Decius, the sleazy acid house outfit they founded alongside Paranoid London’s Quinn Whalley and Lias Saudi, long running label mate and frontman of the Fat Whites.

In April the duo marked their first new music since 2016 with a remix of May Lavie’s ‘The Poem’ for our R$N sub-label Human Endeavour. The request from label boss Rosie Ama has now jerked the project back into action and, since the release of the remix, the pair have got back in the studio under the moniker and are now giving Decius tracks a Medicine 8 make over. Looks like this won’t be the last we’ll be seeing of the project…

To celebrate this triumphant return, boy have we got a treat for you. Luke and Liam have kindly put together a two-hour long 100% Medicine 8 production mix, packed with tracks from the archive, unreleased music, banging remixes and new releases...

Next up for Viscera 133, we're delighted to welcome our very good pal Rosie Ama to the series!

"London-based DJ, radio host and label owner Rosie Ama operates in the outer fringes of dance music, slinging her sleazy cocktail of low-slung chuggers, leftfield house and synth-driven grooves in basements, bars, fields and clubs across the UK and beyond.

Having cut her teeth as a writer and editor for online music platforms Stamp The Wax and Ransom Note, Rosie went on to form Kiara Scuro in 2016 with her friend Nadia - a DJ and production duo with releases for the likes of fabric originals, Ritmo Fatale and Faux Poly, as well as long-standing radio residencies on Rinse FM and Balamii Radio.

After a decade together, Rosie has now turned her focus to her solo project and the trippy sonics that first ignited her passion for DJing, and continue to guide the output of her record label, Human Endeavour. Home to artists like Anastasia Zems, Justine Forever, Nandele, Medicine 8 and Thomass Jackson. 

As another outlet to share her musical discoveries, Rosie hosts a bi-monthly radio show on Bristol’s Noods Radio called Melodic Odds, which showcases the music she listens to away from the club."

For today’s mix, we’ve got a recording from Rosie’s warm up set for Optimo at Phonox, recorded on the 21st June 2025. A proper journey through the sounds she’s best known for.

Andrew Weatherall's first official posthumous mix. The only b2b DJ Harvey ever agreed to. Six hours at Trouw. This one's special.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. After growing up on a steady diet of everything from Indian and western classical music, through to disco, hip hop, reggae, 1980s electronic pop and even heavy metal, Rajesh Deshpande first became involved with electronic dance music in the late 1990s. Initially gravitating towards the intense rhythms and chest-pounding basslines of jungle and drum and bass, his first forays into music production were made alongside his brother. Releasing and touring under the Vice Versa' moniker and thanks to the support from local Sydney DJs and underground radio stations, the duo managed to catch the attention of legendary drum and bass figures LTJ Bukem and Conrad. This led to a string of high profile releases on Bukem's seminal label 'Good Looking Records' (amongst others), as well as residencies in most of Sydney's major dance music venues. After a hiatus, Rajesh has rediscovered his love for music production and DJing in recent years. Always open-minded and keen to explore new territory, he found a new muse and appreciation for the moods and grooves of house music. The resulting 'Miraj (AU)' project has been met with solid support from taste-making underground artists and DJs within Australia and across the world. With releases on several labels including Melbourne's very own Valiant Records, Celestial Recordings (UK), EmbarrassedArts (UK) and Expmental (France) as well as regular appearances on playlists from the likes of Dilby (Poker Flat, 8bit, Crosstown Rebels), Graziano Raffa (Sudbeat), Marsh (Anjunadeep), Robyn Balliet, Gorge, and Steve Kelley, Rajesh continues to forge ahead with his own interpretation of the deep house genre.
