The 'Artist Statement' podcast is a conversation series featuring artists and thinkers from the world of AQNB, a London and Los Angeles-based editorial platform working between visual art, music and critical thinking. Join Editor Steph Kretowicz and Associate Ed. Jared Davis in conversation with experimental practitioners that resist classification, paying close attention to the discursive changes brought on by developments in technology and communication.

In this episode Steph speaks with Katja Novitskova, known for her installations addressing the rapidly developing planet, its dataflows, and the effects of human industrial expansion on the environment.

Beginning her studies in semiotics, new media and graphic design before somewhat unintentionally finding her way into the art world, Katja became associated with the so-called post-internet art scene of the mid-to-late 2000s, that defined a generation of artists informed by the online aesthetics, practices and culture of the time. 

Katja’s work has long since moved on from that era’s obsessions with the image and its circulation—exemplified by her long-running ‘Approximations’ series of aluminium cutouts of stock animal photography—to a more recent run of exhibitions at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn in 2018 and Whitechapel Gallery in 2019. Concluding with her 'Invasion Curves' installation for Preis der Nationalgalerie at Berlin’s Hamburger Banhof that same year, her practice these days delves into the urgent concerns around the Anthropocene.

INCOMING : Vini Pistori Feat Abrão - Sobrevivendo O Desacordo (Iñigo Vontier Remix) #Calypso

The Calypso cult keeps spreading around the world and this time they welcome: Vini Pistori and Red Axes frequent guest Abrão. The two Brasilians join forces to deliver an epic EP called “Louco & Sobrevivendo”.

“Luoco Chama” slowly starts with a simple beat until Abrao's vocals kick in to get you in the mood while a mental arp keeps the track driving foward. “Sobrevivendo o Desacordo” brings a strong modulating bass and again the epic Abrao vocals intervine for a dreamy interlude and a complete release of energy. The tracks are simple to leave space for the voice but powerfull enough to have a life on it's own.

Label bosses come to rework each of the tracks. Iñigo takes “Sobrevivendo o Desacordo” and transforms it into a percussion frenzy with robotic vocals. While Thomass takes “Luoco Chama” and makes it an instant classic with a "White Horse style" bassline and acid touches that add new psychedelia to the track.

Tenebrous frenchman Jon Beige (formerly known as Beige) strikes back with his 3rd release, and once again creates his own genres that we’re going to define here as ghettowave or leftfield-core. Melting high-tech soundscapes, hypnotic synths and broken drums, his heavily synthetic universe spreads into 5 new tracks. Here’s a few words about them, including comments from the producer himself.

Distorsion Naturelle de l’Auto Radio is a straight-in-the-face kind of entrance. This arid and distorted urban jam puts you straight in the heart of Jon Beige’s dystopian Gotham paradise « I often imagine it as a laser tag game that would turn wrong ».  

On Palo Santo, Jon Beige is going dancehall. Using the genre’s symptomatic drum pattern, he navigates between club-friendly and meditative moods in a tensed yet balanced journey. « That’s the track I think is the most finished of the EP, but all the tracks match together in a not-fully-calculated way ».Hydrocution is a funk ballad, like a mysterious forest walk surrounded by disturbing but harmless creatures that are taking you to a bright glade, where you will finally stumble into the master of the place. « I often struggle to produce something simple with just a few elements – this track is the first time I succeeded. »

Isolat is a smooth and psychedelic sci-fi trip, unexpected and always moving forward « I imagined a little robot lost in a city suburb, wondering what he was doing there. Mood is kinda Spike Jonze’s ‘’Da Funk’’ but with a robot ».

The EP closes in a very noir scene, heavy rain, melancholia and cold blooded crimes : Déjeuner Sous l’Herbe won’t let you rest in peace. « This track, my oldest on this EP, was made in 2014. I’m still really into the solo in the end ».  

The artwork is designed and imagined by Belgrade-based artist and producer Stevie Whisper, aka the hands behind Yes and Mystic Stylez.
The record will be released as a ziplock package that includes a USB stick with the WAV files and exclusive club remixes + a limited edition poster + some cool stickers.

Releasing Jon Beige since his earliest work, Global Warming Records is run by french producer and talent seeker Malcolm, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Friendly Surveillance will be the label’s 12th release.

In winter 1976, a few years before Olexandr Shapoval headed up well-known band Vodogray, a jazz band called Shapoval Sextet recorded three pieces "Kobzareva Duma" in live at the Donetsk Jazz Festival. The tape has been lost for almost 45 years, until now. The most radical, experimental and psych jazz recording from the Ukrainian Soviet-era found to date.

This release was recorded during the covid19 crisis as a showing of true endurance to complete an idea no matter what. Some of the vocal tracks were recorded virtually which felt bit strange at first but worked out in the end. The Ep starts with the title track, “No Fairy” which is an upbeat, piano driven, instrumental. Next up is a remix of the track that follows called, “Carry Me” which is mostly driven by piano stabs and synths. Track 3 is a mellow tempo, vocal house jam which feature the vocal talents of, Trina Williams. The Ep moves along through tracks 4 & 5 with two mixes that feature vocals by Eva Soul.

While ZamZam Sounds is a dub label without reservation or qualification, our roots as music lovers reach deep into punk, metal, folk musics, and other sounds from the well. Thus it’s a great pleasure to introduce ZamZam 79, a musical blessing from Al Cisneros of Sleep and Om fame. 

As bass player and vibe-controller for two of the most seminal bands in the 'stoner metal' and heavy drone zones respectively, Cisneros has toured the globe countless times anchoring multiple projects with his distinctive, melodic bass weight. So singular is his tone and approach that Rickenbacker recently released an Al Cisneros signature bass guitar. His deep love of reggae has manifested most explicitly in a number of releases under his own name, on his own Sinai imprint as well as Drag City, and it was these releases that convinced us we had to reach out. 

“Apple Pipe” is a magisterial mid-tempo steppers led by live drums, an utterly enveloping bassline, and horns that warm like sweet smoke under a summer sunrise after a long, cold night. Focused, minimalist, clear and uncompromising roots music. 

“No Tobacco” wets up the hi hats and opens up the reverb-space, releasing snare echoes that filter out deep into subterranean caverns, occasionally boomeranging back from the depths, building into washes that overtake only to dissipate again.

They glimmered and flickered down below as he floated amidst the darkness. Up in the sky above Canary Wharf he gazed out upon a bittersweet city. That merry go round, it kept on spinning, endlessly turning in a cosmic blur which seemed as if it might never stop. This was London, a chaotic bubble in the midst of a dying kingdom, yet all of the lights kept shining brightly on. It were as if they'd been left on for him alone to wander upon the moonlit sky and reflect upon the place he'd once existed. That was it, it had to be. 

Calabashed are an assortment of musicians based out of London's Total Refreshment Centre. They are Maria Osuchowska, Donna Thompson, James Howard, Raimund Wong, Betamax  of The Comet is Coming, Joshua Idehen & Alabaster DePlume. Their music sits somewhere between jazz and electronica, touching upon elements of hip hop and underpinned by beautiful, cosmic poetry which deciphers experience and life in the city.
