Where You Gonna Go?

An album by Roman Flügel is always a sensation. That holds true for his countless monikers and collaborations as it does for his 2011 Dial debut Fatty Folders. Being the first of its kind under his civic name, the long over-due association of Hamburg's cerebral label and its group of off-centre house and techno individuals with Frankfurt's favorite electronic music producer for the thinking man and woman, proved to be a seminal one.

Now, that sort of Happiness Is Happening again. Roman Flügel's follow up on Dial takes off, where Fatty Folders landed: on a runway that acknowledges the roots of house and techno as well as its fruits, but leads to a different location. Exempt from the burden that a concept album can lay on its author, Flügel seems not to be concerned with the current trends, retro fashion or a pre-conceived topic. Free-wheeling and with a freshness akin to morning dew, he rather takes us by the hand and through ten tracks that sometimes feel like songs without a voice.

Having said that, the strongest point of Happiness Is Happening is that it has a voice. The voice of a maker who is not afraid to mix joy and pain, ambient textures with remnants dance floor euphoria, quiet spaces and loud places. So you have an almost Depeche-Mode-like ballad that the ”Friendship Song” is, next to the techno city ghost story of “JD Atmo”. Slow-motion robot disco (“Wilkie”) appears as much at home here as the bulky “Stuffy” or the sudden impact in “We Have A Nice Life”. That list goes on and on. The most startling fact about Roman Flügel's tour de force is that its sum is as great as its parts. Nothing feels superfluous, ill-paced or forced here. Its a condensate of a life that has been spent in techno, house and its various mutations and archetypes with a sensibility for pop music, a consciousness of indie culture and an affinity for the avant-garde as such. 

Happiness Is Happening is like a concept album without a concept. A testament to the fact that the concept of an album that works within the realms and boundaries of “electronic (dance) music” can be so much more than a loose collection of 12-inches or just an exercise in style: it can be, after all, a piece of art and at its best comparable to a successful singer-songwriter album without words. Especially, when the creator of all his seems to be truly comfortable with himself and at his best. Then, Happiness Is Happening, indeed.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Informed by years spent building electronics and collecting records in Chicago and honing crowd control skills in the foggy clubs of London, "C Powers" output approaches multiple rhythmic configurations via the intent of generating human response expressed in dance. C Powers is currently residing back in his home state of Georgia and is holding resident DJ posts at Atlanta's "Hunger" club night and his own "Cape Fear" in Savannah, Georgia. C is also the resident DJ for Savannah's own "House Of Gunt" performance group who through cross sensory stimulation experiences involving gender blasting action and choreography. Chris's recent output includes 12"s on Proper Trax, CGI, Niche-N- Bump, as well as producing tracks for 18+ (Houndstooth/Fabric).  All Right is a sample-based late night banger with remixes from house music heavyweights Parris Mitchell (Dance Mania), Kai Alce (NDATL), and John Barerra & Will Martin (Dolly, Argot). Sweely comes crashing through the windows of the Distant Hawaii beach house HQ with a humungous, stomping, NY-Jersey inspired EP that combines war drum level percussion with soulfully flowing vocals and lush pads galore.

All The Reasons has done the rounds for a while now and it's an absolute monster. Massive heaving kicks rumble under clattering hats and a soft, woozy pad and hawt-as-hell vocal flourishes.

Following on a similar tip, Around is a more extended affair, morphing from a brooding down-pitched moaner to a arm-throwing, hip-slinging Jersey banger straight outta NYC.

On the flip, Yes He is keeps the New York house vibes flowing on a slightly more low slung tip. One for the slow summer Sunday terrace dance. Lastly, Blue Faces takes a plunge into the deep blue, skin fizzing with the cold caress of salt-water and seaweed on freshly sun-kissed skin. One for the sunset and sea-lovers.

Pin Up Club is a collaboration between Jos van Galen and Jelle Imbos. They met each other in 1998 and have been making music together ever since. In 2015 they started working together on their latest project Pin Up Club. Their music can be described as Post-industrial Electro Punk, but also has flavours of Dark Disco, Italo and EBM. Tracks and remixes signed by labels like Bordello a Parigi (NL), NEIN Records (UK), Wonder Stories (US) and Night Noise (NL) are getting support from DJ’s all over the world.

At times the way the voice skipped intermittently, the recording sounded like an exercise in Uncle Bill's scissors technique but in my defence the mic I was using was hidden. I knew Jean was recording me, he'd asked for an interview after finding my name in one of his black notebooks, but Jean didn't know I was recording him. He was tuning into fading echoes and when he thought the tape machine was off he left an echo of his own.
"I caused such scenes on the way to and at kindergarten that first day my mother never bothered risking damage to my nascent psyche by making me return. Consequently come first grade my petulance had precluded me from the nursery school forged friendships of my new classmates. It's why I've always been an observer. But I've never been an archivist. I never wrote the intimate details down. If you fix them on paper there's a danger of shared ownership. The black notebooks contain coded references, the meaning once obvious now somewhat cryptic. Names, some possibly anagrammatical and numbers, presumably long dead phone lines. There are a few sketches but no photographic evidence of any kind. This to most of the population, with its need for minute by minute high def validation, sounds like a curse. I however feel blessed. Evidence is the enemy. Magick for me is the carp in Herman's monastery pond. Brief flashes of gold as I disturb the murky silt of memory."
It's there that one of the only two recordings of Jean's voice comes to an end. Jean has his copy obviously but if I know Jean, it's long been lost or destroyed.

The multi faceted functionality of the human spirit was a remarkable feat. The machines watched with fascination as they looked out upon the condition of those living amongst the sand. In the midst of the desert lay their spectacularly mirrored space ship, an entity in its own right and a strange spectacle to behold amidst the Middle Eastern backdrop. They pondered relentlessly the nature of such interaction between body and mind, yet they could not comprehend or decipher the orchestration of actions and which was a result of the other. 

Lockyear has received far reaching support around this release. The latest edition to the OTB catalogue sees him deliver three inspired cuts which sit somewhere between techno and progressive house. This one is good.

The green grass blew softly in the wind and the woods loomed eerily in the distance. The sun set down by the wall as the last of the summer daylight crashed ominously from above. In the depth of the night this place would become a temple, a prism of chaos and the beginning of the end. A warehouse could be heard closing up for the night in the distance. The clatter of shutters rattled in the air as the lights flickered in the street outside. This was to be the location they had dreamt of. Here in the garden they were safe.

It had been weeks since she had last been able to drift off in peace, her mind continued to race and play melodic tricks upon her every blink. The scenario had become repetitive and boring yet still it continued to plague her ever evening. She had always pondered the nature of life as an insomniac but had never imagined she might find herself in such a position. Whilst the world lay still, she was wide awake . 

Dirt Crew Recordings are set to release a new EP from Icelandic up and comer Felix Leifur. Based in Reykjavik he is an artist who continues to place emphasis upon the value in community and locality, there are a steady stream of musicians emerging from the area.

The stakes had been raised so damn high that his legs had begun to shake. As he watched the wheel spin he continued to count the rotations of the spin, praying and wishing that the star might land where his marker was at. The room had gone eerily quiet, or at least it seemed that way to him. He held tightly onto the green felt of the table beneath his fingertips trying not to blink. Soon the marker would drop and his night would end in one of two ways. 

Gary Gritness returns with a second edition of "The Sugar Cane Chronicles" for Hyperdub. He brings with him four heavy hitting funk cuts in his own peculiar fashion.

The temperature was ferociously hot in the dark basement. Outside the sun was at its highest peak and the concrete was smouldering under the blistering rays. Underground, it was much the same bar the lack of light. This was by choice and not an accident. Nobody liked to dance in the eye of others judgement, hence the shadows were best for such fun. As the room begin to fill it was remarkable to watch the people shed their clothes, layer by layer they became more free. The sweat dripped from above. 

Daniel T steps up with two tracks for the fun loving Cosmic Pint Glass label. He is accompanied by Lauer and Jack Pattern who offer a set of spectacular alternatives to his own arrangements
