Eclectic Journeys have been collecting and djing since the mid 80's, their love of music started out with bands like Crosby, Sills & Nash, Neil Young and artist Bob Dylan, fast forward 3 decades and their next progression was to start playing around with some of the eclectic music they had stumbled upon, and the next thing you know they have a limited 12" record coming out with the results of their tinkering, due out in October the release includes 4 edits of balearic & leftfield delights. So to celebrate our debut release we have complied a selection of tunes old and new, so sit back and enjoy the ride across the calm seas on one of our musical journeys…………

Mix of the Week #36: ℰclectic ℐourneys - Calm Seas

The Universal Cave crew return for second helpings of dancefloor delight, uniting Charleston's finest disco duo back to back on wax. Coming from two regulars behind the decks, prolific crate diggers, collectors and editors, you'd expect good things, and you'd be right! Side A offers a hard-hitting vocoder disco bomb from the ever forward, deep and free disco minister JAZ. I haven't got the foggiest what the original is I'm afraid, although the slavic vibe of the vocals suggests it has eastern European roots. Party Dad cools things down to pool party perfection with his "Dream Dance" edit on the flip. Pastoral, proggy and horizontal, this is one far out dude. It's all chiller, no filler on this soothing 7", packing plenty of autumnal balearic vibes.

Tel Aviv’s Red Axes are one of the most exciting new acts in dance music, with rich sound that is musical, deep, trippy and organic, while remaining precise and lethally effective in the club. The range in their sound is impressive, their talent unmistakeable. They are one of our favourite artists of the year, and this latest record is one of their best yet.

Lead track 'Waiting for a Surprise’ builds around a mid-tempo disco bassline, with tough percussion, and rugged synth stabs, but it’s the eerie and unique sounding vocals of Brazilian collaborator Abrao that bring everything together. This one is a guaranteed bomb for building up, tearing down, peak time or chilling out… an outstanding track in every sense, the kind that force trainspotters to the DJ booth to discover what’s playing. Next up, ‘Hope’ kicks off with resonant, delayed toms, adding a haunting howl and synths before dropping into a wild, clanging, carnivalesque frenzy. It’s understated, but advanced, with an interesting arrangement that really opens up in the second half. Finally, 'The Metal Bender’ slows the tempo but ups the vibe into an elated, slow-burning space-disco anthem. Fantastic stuff!

Melbourne’s Kris Baha, fresh from launching his Power Station imprint, offers a stripped down remix of ‘Waiting for a Surprise,’ with a heavy, industrial-influenced groove that wanders into the deep, dark end of party strasse.

Having broken the barrier for murky skewed house with his 2014 white label 'A Place Called Ballacid', Hungarian scene founder S Olbricht returns with a full album on Lobster Theremin that channels his distinct brand of thumping, sludgy techno, weaving through repetitive drone-laden ambient and Hague-esque escape soundtrack house.

'For Perfect Beings' is a sound-palette tour de force, picking 'n' mixing tempos and tonal balances that shift throughout each track and side of vinyl. Which strangely starts on a 12" LP slab and ends with a pseudo 'bonus' 10" two track experiment.

Openers 'Astrid' and 'Blambestid' form a pair of progressive chugging rollers; journey tracks from the interstellar void that shift and glisten and singe under the gamma rays of a neutron star, finally collapsing back in to the void.

'Fadaisco' meanwhile picks up the baton for breakneck Legowelt-ian techno and rightly adds another ten layers of intensity, building to a relentless, rapturous and revolution-inspiring euphoria.

There's a brief respite from the ongoing rebellion soundtrack, firstly in the form of 'Gesnaria', a short but stuttering drift into a shrouded lake of lucid memories. An alternative snippet of the Solaris soundtrack that perfectly blends ambiguous melodic elements with an ongoing confused emotional state.

'Rien' follows this pattern of low slung blurriness by taking a dragging mammoth low end and dredging it under looping and morphing samples that clatter and ascend to a more controlled climax that signals a transition to peace from the frantic madness that peppered the album's early tracks.

Stepping onto the conceptual physical 10" side of the album, containing the "fast" and "slow" versions of 'Ovacrwded', these two tracks bear more than a tempo difference. The fast version is birthed in the womb, with the emanating warmth of rumbling subs accompanied by heavily shelved and scuffed percussive artefacts. The slow version is a new beast entirely, latching a haunting, wandering high synth line to the throbbing, distorting mid and low range, that barely seem to separate throughout the entirety of the tracks, scrunched together in a cooperative analogue rhythm.

The shopfront looked gloomy and mysterious in the streetlight. Dust sat layered in the windows and no light could be seen from within. The crew of revellers stood eagerly outside the door, a small queue had already begun to form behind them as they waited. Finally at midnight, the bolts were unlatched and it swung open. One at a time they were ushered inside and in the distance they could hear the sound of drums echoing. Below them there was a party underway, deep down in the basement, and they were going there.

"Can you sang?" shouted the bartender. The down and out hell hole had been falling apart for decades amidst the Texas landscape. It sat discretely alongside the highway as it had for many years, its wooden shutters blowing gently in the breeze against the old shack of a building. Inside there were few customers, the drunken women behind the til would shout at each customer who entered challenging them to sing. Her strong southern accent bellowed sharply through the quiet as she called for a "sanger" over and over again. 

Hotel Lauer is the project of Phillip and Jacob Lauer, two German brothers with a taste for percussion, synths and drums. Here is their latest release on Emotional Especial.

The tree sat atop the far away hill amidst a sea of long green grass and reeds. In the distance the child could be seen swinging from one of the tallest branches, heaven knows how he had made it so high. All that could be seen was his shadow against the darkening afternoon sky as he swang to and fro. No ladder would reach as far up as to bring him down. All of a sudden the tree let our a solemn creak, it began to talk and whispered to the crowd which had gathered beneath the swinging child. It spoke...

Based over the pond Suzanne Kraft has done a very good job of raising his profile in Europe. His sound fits perfectly on labels such as ESP, Melody As Truth, Running Back and now Kitjen. This latest effort sees him amp things up a tad as he releases three dance floor targeted tracks on the 'DJ Safety' EP.

The tables had turned on the world of spirituality. What had once been a thing so profound and adored had become black. Higher powers were at work beyond the understanding of those on earth, their worhsip had once been kind, loving and good but now the mass was tarred by a haunting set of moral judgements and all encompassing beliefs. This was a black mass. 

Amir Alexander has always had a close affiliation with Argot as a label, in 2012 he was the first artist to release on the imprint. Now he returns offering up a three track EP titled "The Butterfly".

One gun hung behind the bar, never had it been used before but there was an ever growing sense of tension amidst the gathering drunks. In the corner of the room a glass fell and smashed to pieces, this was met by a roar of laughter from the gang of youths to the left. The barman shifted nervously on his feet and glanced around the room. He dreaded the moment in which he might have to take action, make a move and use that gun, that lonely gun, that solo gun.

For its fourth release, the imprint is welcoming Japanese producer J.A.K.A.M. and his "Rebirth" EP, consisting of two original tracks and two remixes by Dreems and Versatile Records head honcho Gilb'R, who needs no introduction. The latter delivers a stripped down and soaring dub version of "Rebirth" which slowly builds up to an intense and spellbinding experience.
