Lee Kelly - Excerpts From Layers Of Identity (Full Stream) Out Now!

Λένα Πλάτωνος (Lena Platonos) is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. Her debut solo album, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was produced in 1984 and reissued by Dark Entries in 2016. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the Roland TR 808 drum machine and Yamaha C60 synthesizer. Lena narrates each song in deadpan fashion, skillfully reciting her surreal Greek poetry. Her lyrics deal with the futility of love, the gap of human relationships, consumerist alienation in the bourgeois lifestyle of the 1980s.

We’ve recruited four of our favorite contemporary producers to remix their favorite tracks from ‘Sun Masks’. First up is “Lego” remixed by triple scorpio supernova Avalon Emerson, who is based in Berlin. Her remix morphs the track into a solid dancefloor twister. Next is “Lego” remixed by Lena Willikens, Cologne based DJ and resident at Salon Des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. She provides a deep and psychedelic journey through the darker shadows of the early night or morning. On the B-side is New Yorker and Firehouse Recordings boss Kim Ann Foxman remixing “Hoping By Shopping”. She transforms the spacey robotic vocoder track into a dynamic deep house workout, tough and dreamy all at once. Closing out the EP is a remix of “Wrong Love” by Berlin via Bucharest producer Borusiade aka Miruna Boruzescu. Enhancing the original melancholic piano ballad to a cosmic processional with poignant bass lines that build and recess like the ocean tides. 

All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is a reinterpretation of the original ‘Sun Masks’ cover, isolating the photograph of Lena wearing sunglasses designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a manipulated film still from one of Lena’s music videos.

Berlin-based DJ, producer and label head of I'm A Cliche Cosmo Vitelli fuses elements of krautrock, pop and post-punk on the four track record and exhibits a maturity in his production, a reflection of his inventive studio work since moving to the German capital two years ago. The first single from the LP to be released is opener 'A Brand New City', his collaborative effort with Fantastic Twins.

Cosmo Vitelli hasn’t slept since 1973. Instead, he’s replaced slumber with the tireless exploration of electronic music, sharing his finds as an accomplished DJ and label manager as well as an esteemed producer, with heaps of records, remixes and edits under his belt. With his upcoming two-part LP on Malka Tuti, Cosmo brings forward his more diverse and somehow mature musical side, combining elements of post-punk, krautrock, electronica and pop on this first of 2 four-track records.
The premiered track "Die Alraune" we find Cosmo collaborating with Sebastian Lee Philipp (of Die Wilde Jagd fame) to show his more post-rock/krautrock side.

The alarm rang loudly, reverberating on the wooden bedside table. A sliver of sunlight crept through the curtains casting a bright strip of light across the room. She hit the clock beside her with a huge thwack knocking it off the table and on to the floor. A loud sigh left her lips; the morning was her least favourite time of day. She scrunched her eyes as she hiked herself up and made a move towards the window. The light poured in to the room as she drew the curtains back. It was time to ease into it.

Formally operating as Sage, All City Records affiliate Lee Kelly has shed his former guise in favour of his birth name for his forthcoming EP. Layers Of Identity marks the eighth release on the First Second Label, a sub label of Dublin's All City, following releases from DJ OK, Minimal Violence and Der Opium Queen. Across five tracks he works with shimmering synths, at times introducing broken drum work, claps and crisp snares, for a release that evokes a real sense of nostalgia.

Following on from the aromatic, breaksy house flavours of ELLLL's 'Febreeze' EP issued a few months ago, @firstsecond-dublin enlists local boy @leekellymusic, aka Sage, for a much ear-pleasing round of solar-powered machine funk and organic house magic.

We’ve been fans of Lee Kelly for time. The Dublin producer is just as handy at making a face melting bangers as he is exploring the deeper side of electronica, showcasing an emotional versatility and open mind.

‘Layers of Identity’ came out on cassette imprint wherethetimegoes (of which this latest release shares its title) and was one of our favourite releases of last year – floating in and out of breaks, jungle, left field leaning house and ambient.

We’ve copped the remix of Still Hopeful It’s True (Or S.H.I.T for short) from Berlin duo DJ OK. Funny enough, the first time we ever came across DJ OK was when Lee and First Second Label boss DCFSLman played together on Red Light Radio. They dropped a crazy, dubbed out breaky number that blew our minds. A quick Instagram message to Lee enlightened us to who it was by.
DJ OK has flipped Lee’s beatless ambient sequence into a optimistic, emotive groover.
