Rushing out advanced patterns that springboard from hi-tek soul, jungle, footwork and weightless grime into unknown zones, J-Shadow arrives on Sneaker Social Club with an album which cements his status as a true sonic scientist. 

Since his first drops some five years prior, the London-based DJ/producer has weaved a web of intrigue across labels like Bun The Grid, Nous Disques, Warehouse Rave and an album last year for Keysound. Through it all, he’s demonstrated a prodigal affinity for the elements of hardcore -rooted soundsystem culture without ever being beholden by the perceived rules of dance music.  In his hands, tracks can hover in suspense without ever needing a breakdown or build-up, pivoting on skittering drum machine pulses or teetering on the precipice of mountainous subs, gliding on celestial pads or skating into abyssal negative space. The acknowledgement for past methods is there in some of the canonical samples - like where Heather O’Rourke’s Poltergeistcall takes on a truly alternative dimension subtly bedded into the vast swathes of ‘Beneath The Undertow’ - but nothing is as it seems. 

The End Of All Physical Form is no self-consciously ‘deconstructed’ record, though. It’s futurist rather than post-modern, carrying on the legacy of jungle and other such forms as vehicles for innovation and urgent exploration, bristling with energy and still, ironically, physical despite the mutated forms the beats and basslines manifest in. Find these works an open-eared soundsystem and they’ll absolutely do the damage, taking the dance somewhere far beyond in the process.

Gimme A Break Records present Groovy D’s “Phase Shift EP”, a collection of 3 genre-bending tracks designed for the club, supplemented with a leftfield breakbeat remix from An Avrin. Leeds-based Groovy D is a former founding member of Denham Audio, who has amassed an enviable string of releases on highly respected labels, including Shall Not Fade, Unknown To The Unkown and Hardline Sounds. His sound primarily contributes to the new wave of 2-step and 4x4 UKG. However, he also draws influence from UK Funky, Dubstep and Techno in his productions. Groovy’s sets are as energetic as his tracks, allowing him to play at a number of top clubs in the UK and around Europe. 2023 sees no slowing in the pace and momentum of Groovy’s rise, with sets as far flung as Tbilisi, Georgia as well as a huge fabric debut.

GABD013 sees Groovy at his most unrestrained, colliding ideas from multiple genres in a highly energetic EP. In “Freak U” Groovy utilises his break chopping skills to create a contemporary electro-style beat against the backdrop of an acid-like rave stab, constantly moving and shifting throughout the track. “Phase Shift”, the track which kickstarted the EP, came together quickly on a train down to the capital. This 145 bpm rave weapon features meticulously chopped break elements as well as high-energy stabs and is bound to get the club moving. Building on the success of his highly sought-after “Glue Riddim” released on ec2a, Groovy melds elements from Dubstep, UK Funky and Breakbeat to send “Ravey Riddim” to new heights. Finally, Scuffed Recordings mainstay and South London’s resident leftfield wizard An Avrin provides a stupendous remix of “Freak U”, sending listeners through a portal of incomparable sound design.

The clouds floated softly on by. It were as if the storm which had come before had simply never happened but for the chaos and wreckage which it had left in its wake.

It's funny how transient nature could be. One minute something was here, present and destructive. The next it was very much not, very much away.

The skies would be brighter soon, the rebuild down beneath would commence and everything would return to as it was. All that was left now of that night were the memories, for they too could not float and disappear like clouds.

Mattias De Craene is set to release an album comprised of tape loops, grainy textures and mesmerizing saxophone. It's deeply pensive, thoughtful and dramatic. Layers upon layers of textures and sound infusions create new landscapes which are reminiscent of places not yet visited.

The release is forthcoming on VIERNULVIER Records.
