Carl Finlow keeps on keeping on. As the world changes around him, the veteran producer continues to do what he does best - craft top-quality electro tunes which invoke the sound’s Drexciyan heyday, yet carry themselves with an assurance that is all of Finlow’s own. 

Finlow remains a prolific producer more than a quarter of a century on from his emergence. Still averaging several records a year across a variety of aliases, recent times have seen Finlow forge particularly strong links with the Central Processing Unit label. Now, after a run of EPs for the Sheffield imprint which began with 2018’s ‘Projections’, Finlow’s Silicon Scally project offers up CPU’s first drop of 2022 in the form of the ‘Field Lines’ LP. 

Silicon Scally productions have long been marked out by how they combine piston-precise beat programming with more textured synth play. ‘Field Lines’ runs with this formula to deliver some of Finlow’s most atmospheric material to date. At once shadowy and expansive, listening to ‘Field Lines’ is the aural equivalent of taking a night-time drive around some futuristic metropolis. 

The beats cruise sleekly here. Many of these burbling machine-funk numbers hover at mid-tempo, the crisp clip of their drum programming given shape and depth by all sorts of percussive tones fizzing around at the fringes of the mix. Even when ‘Field Lines’ seems to set its sights on the club - the Bunker Records-aping ‘Amino’, for instance, or the dystopian whizz-bang of ‘Static Fire’ - the tracks here strut sturdily rather than giving in to full-on freakouts.

However, from this sturdy base, Finlow moves outwards. Working with tones which range from rapid-fire machine-gun bass to keening, dawn chorus keyboard pads, Finlow leads us through the futurescape with the expertise of a seasoned guide. Cuts like ‘Submerged’ and ‘Yield’ are brilliantly cinematic, blooming from those reliable drum pulses into miniature masterpieces of nocturnal electronics. Elsewhere on ‘Field Lines’ there is a mechanical majesty to ‘Inhibitor’ and ‘Altered Domain’ which invokes the brave new worlds that Kraftwerk repeatedly conjured in their heyday.

Central Processing Unit’s first release of 2022 is ‘Field Lines’, an LP of electro-funk explorations from Carl Finlow’s Silicon Scally project which will thrill regardless of whether it’s experienced through headphones or out on the dancefloor.

He got away with murder most of the time; all he had to do was get on the charm offensive and any negative feelings towards him seemed to disappear. Some would say it was a skill, one perfected through years of practice - sometimes he could wriggle out of situations with just a smile and a wink. It was inevitable that at some point he wouldn't get off so lightly, a time would come where he'd overstep the mark and the world would come crashing down around him.

For the second release on his Dynamics Of Acid imprint MOY joins forces with mystery man Zodiac Childs for a split EP that explores the pair's shared love of electro, breaks and hardcore. Separately the pair have notched up EPs for Nocta Numerica, Batrachian, Exalt Records, Further Electronix and their own labels, and now they're coming together to each share an original cut backed up by a remix of one another's work. Packed full of anthemic melodies, acid madness and thunderous bass, the four tracks showcase the synergy between the two artists and their knack for capturing the euphoria of the 90s.

Human Endeavour Records, the newest member of the Ransom Note Records label family, returns with ‘Confession Time’, its second release and first solo artist EP from Anastasia Zems.

Hot on the heels of the inaugural release, a Various Artists EP featuring six producers from across the world, they welcome the DJ, vocalist and producer for a four-track EP of heads down, mid-tempo sludge that sees her thread the needle between acid, EBM, new beat and cold wave.

With opener ‘Underwear’ Anastasia plots a course into murky depths. The most club-ready cut on the release, it’s driven by a pulsating acid line and rumbling bass that soon give way to hypnotic synth patterns and Anastasia’s sultry, commanding spoken word.

‘Trust Me’ continues on the same note, launching with crisp percussion and hollow drum hits before a warbling sub bass engulfs us whole. Eerie pads and shimmering synths are introduced alongside ghostly vocal stabs which elevate the sonics from the darkness.

The pace drops as we reach the halfway mark of the EP. Potent and trance-inducing, ’Slowdance’ crawls along carried by a squelchy acid line that gradually unfurls over a haunting synth pattern and echoing, whispered vocals.

‘I Don’t Wanna’ wraps things up on a lighter note. A low slung bass line and steady drum beat is met by intoxicating bells that ring out overhead while Anastasia’s soft, heady tones keep the EP’s overall air of mystery alive.

On the inspiration behind the EP, Anastasia explains: “Behind each of the tracks there is a story about something personal. It so happens that my vocals usually appear in tracks during improvisation and most often do not change. This is my way of expressing feelings. It turns out that this is the time for confession.”

As a DJ and producer Anastasia Zems chases a counterpart to her urban upbringing, drawing inspiration from the tribal sounds of imagined rainforests. Her psychedelic, rhythmic productions, which she laces with her signature mysterious vocals have earned her singles, remixes and EPs on labels like Needs, Les Yeux Orange, ИДА, Fucanglong Files and Whypeopledance.

Human Endeavour is the newest addition to Ransom Note Records’ family of sub-labels. Curated and run by Ransom Note Editor, and one half of DJ duo Kiara Scuro, Rosie Ama Cain, the label will be a “space for artists who are exploring the dark, deep and hypnotic corners of the musical spectrum.”

PREMIERE: Anastasia Zems - Slowdance [Human Endeavour]

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” a sage modernist poet previously whispered. And here we go, far out and yet so near, the third edition of “Risks Issues Opportunities” brings frontier reverberations scratching at the edges of dance, pop, downbeat, and other trance- portive sectors. Eight fast/slow propelling tracks. Adventurous, full of grandeur, gratifying the dance floor while equally winning the relaxation zones. Pure emotions crafted by newcomers. There is Milan’s Tagliabue, trancing slow and insightful. Or Cologne’s Grischerr, eloquently Tolouse-Low-Traxing. Some go down the slow burning road, where rhythms hang low, and suspense is in full show. Like London’s Frank Rodas, Garnu Depot from Iran, or Xei Ju from the islands of Micronesia, striking all ears with ghostly transcendental percussive science. An autumnally global voyage, which likewise offers industrialized districts by Italian producer Federico Cassetta, Metropolis minimal wave pop by Japanese musician Saeko Killy, or odd swamp funk by Chilean/German duo 7697 Miles. They all show, how far you can go, without losing your distinct flow.

This is a reissue of a short-lived and obscure UK dance music label. A compilation of tracks featured on releases across 3 EP’s between 1991 and 1993 incorporating recently emergent dub techno and progressive acid house sounds. Nation of Noise was conceived in the early 90's, following a meeting of minds between the producer Django and vocalist Jon Martin at the legendary Soho institution: The Brain. 

Plate 1 is a fully remastered reissue of the first Nation of Noise record - Xes Noiz, featuring 4 locked grooves. 

Plate 2 takes two tracks off both the Lockgroove and Super Bubble EP's. One side is smooth, after-hours deep house whilst the other reaches for two progressive, acid cuts. 

Fun facts: 

- Feel the Joy received airtime by Jon Peel on Radio 1 and Elvis Stole My Space Hopper was a favourite of Colin Faver and Colin Dale on KISS FM 
- Kris Needs awarded Xes Noiz record of the week in NME, putting it in the same group as Weatherall and Aphex! 
- Riley Reinholdt raved about Xes Noiz in legendary German publication Spex and travelled to U.K. to interview Jon and Django. 
- Piano Tilt was a playlist favourite of Derrick May 
- Progressive acid house pioneers like Scott Hardkiss began lauding the Nation of Noise imports on the West-Coast sound systems of the San Francisco Bay Area. 
- The A3 of Xes Noiz was a minor hit on the emerging jungle/breakbeat scene. DJ's used to pitch it up before Metalheadz and Photek really defined that abstract sound. 

Nation of Noise 91 - 93 is the first of many records to be released by Seven Hills.

The title & concept of this release is simply an acknowledgement of a creative process in which going inwards can lead to the discovery of something unique.

We as people move alongside technological advancements & this has the power to ‘connect & isolate’ Our personal relationships with one another also take on new forms as our tools for communication change. This inspires creative action. The human response to modern devices can result in surreal and unfamiliar expressions. In terms of music, our instant access to information from the past & engrained intuitions lead us to revisit atavistic rhythms of the past & reinterpret them with new sensibilities. We create music from the ‘Now’ that traverses the ‘Past’ with sights set on the future!

Bonds created from this expression can withstand and even strengthen even when inter-continental physical distance is imposed - forcing us to look inward to investigate the true depth of relationships forged out of creative expression. Rhythm has been used for millennia to locate the deepest parts of the soul & to re/connect spirits - this is true also in the modern age. Certain feelings cannot be expressed via digital text-communications nor with words alone; Music is the answer. Connection through disconnection.
