A collection of unreleased TFR music from the vaults

Long known for their killer releases on labels like Skam and Blueprint Records, this mix they've dubbed Ratio Sound Trials sees James Ruskin and Mark Broom collecting all sorts of fragments, sketches, and loops from the last few years that never bloomed into a coherent hour of head-spinning productions. Side A sees the first 30 minutes filled with intoxicating head-nod sonics, edging closer towards the skuffed hip hop beat tapes of the late 90s, flipping samples and wildstyle vocal cuts over programmed drum loops. On the flip the anti is upped with an increase in torque and tension over the following half hour, exploring the monolithic dystopian sound design they have mastered over the years, flitting between techno and electro influences with constantly shifting, tense rhythms. The Fear Ratio claim the material on these transmissions won’t be heard again, so listen in and grab one of the limited run cassettes while they’re still around.

Groof has been twisting electronic devices through his whole life, more than 30 years to be precise. He was there when techno was founded, he released proper techno when nobody had any interest, back in the early nineties. The uncertain days of the pandemic supposed an injection of time in his busy teacher agenda and he found spare time to develop intelligent dancefloor weapons again.
 
Some of those works catch our attention immediately and the result is this extended digital EP, comprising 6 pure exercises of timeless techno.
 
Information Disorder opens fire with crazy metallic Fm sequences floating over a sharp and minimal beat that grows progressively as minutes go by. Direct and obsessive.
 
Inoculate is fast and metallic too, with panned industrial hits spicing a continuous sequence that keeps the flow nicely. No breakdowns, No obvious twists, hypnosis as a tool.
 
On Online Propaganda the pulse is kept high this time using shuffled percussive sequences over a traditional 909 groove. Minimal but quite effective when properly used.
 
Dystopian Future Now starts with no mercy, almost every component up since the starting point with an occasional hi-hat coming in and out wisely. Dense and dark but super dynamic at the same time.
 
Salto uses the capabilities of the stereo field in full potential, again with a minimalistic approach using a few elements constantly mutating over a lineal and abstract arrangement.
 
The release closes in an epic vein with the precious and floaty Cambios. Immensely reverberated pads going along a broken beat ideal to bring soul to a dirty techno set or close an open-air location at dawn.

'Always Then’ is the debut album of The KVB, originally released in 2012 on limited edition vinyl by Glasgow-based Clan Destine Records. It was written and recorded in 2011 on a Fostex tape machine by Nicholas Wood, with Kat Day joining him to form a duo later that year.

The original cover art featured a photo of a building in the centre of Mexico City, which was taken by friend and fellow musician Ela Orleans. Five years later, whilst on their debut tour of Latin America, the couple had a chance to make a pilgrimage to the same building and so the idea of revisiting and reissuing ‘Always Then’ was born.

This anniversary edition features new artwork with an updated cover photograph of the same building taken by the band in 2017 and the re-mastered full-length debut album and bonus tracks ‘Always Then Revisited’, which consists of four reworked and rerecorded songs from the original album.

Always Then anniversary edition will be out on Invada Records 24/11/2017 on CD with vinyl to follow in the new year.
