Producer, songwriter, arranger and vocalist, Tom Iansek, has unveiled an all-new single under his #1 Dads solo moniker. “So Soldier” – co-written and performed with Melbourne songstress, Ainslie Wills – shudders with a timeless pop mystique.
"So Soldier started as this Smiths-inspired chord progression that Tom had sent to me as a possible collaboration idea,” says Melbourne singer-songwriter, Ainslie Wills, who lent her vocals to the track.
“We jammed it a couple of times and came up with a draft of some simple lyrical ideas that ended up sticking. Tom was so chilled and lovely to work with. He has this quiet confidence that puts you at ease which is so important when you are collaborating with someone for the first time."
The new single is the second to arise from #1 Dads’ forthcoming album, ‘About Face’ – due 8th August on Pieater through Inertia. The first single,“Return To (feat. Tom Snowdon)”, was released in May to a rapturous response from critics and radio alike…

Conceived as a way for Iansek to remain creative between Big Scary album cycles and touring, the new album from #1 Dads has been built over the past two years. Songs about mundanity, songs about desire, songs about loss… themes sung about for centuries, and delivered in a restrained and humble manner on this new LP.
 
The most notable development from 2011’s Man Of Leisure is a new foray into collaboration, which Iansek developed a taste for whilst working with external musicians on Big Scary's Not Art. In his words, co-writing was “a way to lighten the burden of writing/recording/mixing/producing an album by myself”.  Indeed, once the riffs for “So Soldier” and “Return To” were written, Iansek’s mind took him to Ainslie Wills’ and Tom Snowden’s voices respectively, rather than his own.
 
The critical reception of Big Scary’s ‘Not Art’ instilled more confidence in the developing producer, and has created work for Iansek with bands such as Step-Panther, Airling and Hockey Dad. These skills have been brought to ‘About Face’ in its subtle textures, signature use of dynamics, retro guitar lines and intimate vocal takes.

her short life ended so suddenly and unexpected with only 20. beside the huge pain i experienced through her decision to leave, i think i can now say after years of thoughts and reflection, that it was also the event i learned the most of.

this day changed literally everything. it was the hardest reminder that we only have very limited time together, so early in life. it effected all my decisions, every breath is a deeper one since this day. i see with a clear mind and open heart now. it gave me more passion, the ability for self care, it strengthened my empathy & understanding and created a even stronger will to leave the world better than i found it.

i’m sharing this because i don’t want her to become forgotten and meaningless. so, this is what i learned. maybe you get something good from it, too.

be good to yourself. be good to people, even the ones you think that don’t deserve it. be kind to every other sentient being. everyone has her or his own invisible struggles, be aware of it and respect it. keep the people that don’t make you grow and keep you small out of your life. trust yourself, but be ready to question yourself, too. fight. try to find beauty in the saddest and darkest moments. don’t be surprised of change, because it will happen. don’t live a life of bad compromises, go for the whole. don’t fear insecurity. be more brave than you actually are.
