I haven't attempted any of the Junto projects in 10-12 weeks -- and haven't completed one since #32 -- mostly due to them either not catching my interest or presenting technical issues, but occasionally through not having time or not feeling well enough to work on music.

Anyway, I picked up some new VSTs as well as a couple of software upgrades, and I figured this was a good opportunity to test them out. I clipped out the first 20 seconds of the "Bongo" track as per the instructions, and selected three clips each from "Broken Robots" and "The Cat in the Ocean", picking sections I felt would work well together, all in Sound Forge.

I then brought these seven clips into Acid Pro, and with some experimentation made an arrangement, using the beginning of "Broken Robots" as the most recurring section. The application of various VSTs on the individual clips changed their sound significantly from the original source -- again, this was a trial-and-error process as many of the plugins I used were new -- and a selection of plugins on the master channel brought everything together despite originally being sections of three unrelated tracks.

Also, the new Soundcloud layout is horrible. I am not sure if I will get used to it.

<b>Disquiet Junto Project 0052 - Bump Foot CC</b>

Some serendipity involved in this one, as well as a certain amount of initial laziness on my part. The 20 second Bongo intro ended up as an over-stretched drone by accident, but after being cut up and mixed was irresistible. A short section of Broken Robots provide a counter-drone with a melodic feel and part of "The Cat in the Ocean" was stretched, reversed and processed through a number of ambient filters and delays to provide a weird, backwards rhythm track. All of this ended up as a rich, soaring ambient drone with a chorale quality.

But I couldn’t let go of the fact that Robots and Cat sound great played together, just as they are, so I mixed them together and used part of that as a tuneful sprinkle over the drone – I was going to fade that out, but quite by accident (again) the abrupt ending seemed to work.

Accidents can be fun.

Cat Bump & Bongobots [disquiet0052-bumpcc]

This is my contribution to the 52nd disquiet collaboration project, and brings together tracks from three separate artists. 

I sat down tonight to see where I'd land with this. I started by figuring out what key and bpm the three separate uploads were, and imported them to Propellerhead Reason. Once I had them playing nicely together in the same tempo and key I started playing with filters, and particularly tempo-synced filters to create new rhythms from the original ones. 
I tweaked EQ here and sound levels there, and added a wide reverb and an echo over yonder, and finally added a beat, a bass and a pad and called it a day.

The first half is all original sources, except for a new kick/snare. The second has a lot more of me in it.

On a related note, Disquiet Junto has been an incredibly helpful initiative for me to be part of this year. Marc is a heck of guy to have continued to drive this for a full year, and I'm really grateful for his efforts.

Downloaded the three original tracks and converted into wav (with Audacity).  Used Ableton Live to create six core sounds/loops (two from each original piece) and treated/processed them for pitch, texture, etc. Then basically played the resulting Live set (using two Korg nanoKontrollers) with the available sounds.

Some minor edits done afterwards (small volume adjustments throughout, removed a few bars to fit under 5 minutes, put a limiter at the end before rendering), but this is basically the Live set, as "played".

The boatman's dream [disquiet0052-bumpcc]

This track is entirely sounds from 3 tunes off the Japanese Bump Foot netlabel.  (Not sure if we were free to add our own sounds for this week's Junto, but I liked the challenge.)  Links to the Disquiet Junto instructions are down below my description...

From "Bongo" I only took a muffled bass stab, transposed a few times through the track.

From "The Cat In The Ocean" I took the guitar lick that comes up throughout.  I've stretched it out to suit the tempo I had in mind and EQed it, but otherwise it's intact.

All other sounds are (duh) from "Broken Robots".  I cut out tiny bits of percussive sound and tweaked them a lot to make the drum sounds.  Lots of transposing, etc.

The chord stabs and so on are a 4-bar loop played at half-speed, with some tape stop-start effects made by messing with the tempo in AudioMulch while the loop was set to automatically stretch to match tempo.  I exported that stuff and chopped it up to try to get it in time with the beat I'd written.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
