For last year's label compilation, I mentioned how I hoped to invite a guest DJ to compile the next edition, and here we are. Of course, it just had to be our long-term musical companion, a good friend of mine, and well-respected DJ, todos.

I was first introduced to todos through his well-respected Kilchurn Mix series. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, they remain some of my favorite mixes of all time (listen to them all on the ASIP site when you get a chance). His ability to craft a narrative, manipulate samples and respect the grey area between ambient and electronic music, is second-to-none.

Since blogging about his mixes all the way back in 2008, and inviting him to compile a special isolatedmix a few years later, Doug (todos) and I have stayed in touch and connected further after learning we grew up with very similar musical trajectories. Doug also coincidentally, ended up living where my family is today (and where I spent my life growing up) in a surprising twist of fate. And in 2021, after years of speaking online, we finally got to meet, play records (in real life!), and go for a long overdue beer.

I always earmarked Doug to be a part of ASIP somehow, so it is my absolute pleasure to hand over the DJ reins for the 2021 compilation edition. Doug had free choice over which tracks to choose, as long as he included one track from each release of the year. The result is a very special mix, taking us through the ASIP 2021 release catalog in his unique, signature, https://soundcloud.com/djtodos style.

Bio:

Pjusk is Rune Sagevik and Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik from the west coast of Norway – both from small villages close to nature. The sound of Pjusk is inspired by the harsh Norwegian weather and wild landscape. At the center point of the collaboration between the two is an old cabin high up in the mountains. This is where most of the music of Pjusk is made – framed by snowy peaks and the sound of cold streams.

The next Deep Mind Music mix is a recording of the set I played in Croatia as part of Austrian collective @femdex’s 8 hour showcase at Lighthouse Festival on the 2nd of June 2019. Thanks to femdex for the invite 💓

I was playing on the Sunday evening, in one of the last sets of the 5 day festival. The ambient floor was set up in a clearing of the forest next to the sea. I’d always prefer to listen to ambient and drone outside, so I’m super grateful to have had the opportunity to play this music in such an idyllic setting. Looking up to see birds drifting over trees, with leaves rustling in the wind was pretty magical.

I feel like this set operates on a deeper and more cerebral plane than my other DMM mixes, designed for tired festival goers to zone out on the cushions under the trees, drifting in and out of consciousness.

I took this photo watching the sunset over the sea after my set.

Also, the first track of this set by @tarot-plane is going to be part of a forthcoming project I’m currently working on, so keep an eye out for news about that in the near future 👁

Sybil ~ Deep Mind Music Vol.8

Vyvyan is an elusive character, a DJ and producer who prefers to operate under the radar. At the end of last year he showcased his tastes and influences in a mix or Bicep's Feel My Bicep mix series which gave listeners a glimpse into both his record bag and his own productions. Having delivered remixes for Psychemagik and Eclectic, last week saw the release of his new EP Coat Bra Pants on Me Me Me which includes remixes from Not An Animal's Chris Stoker and Robert Johnson resident Gerd Janson.

We invited him to deliver this week's Monday Is OK mix which flows through experimental, beatless rhythms; the music that soundtracks his home listening sessions...

Our Blitzcast series continuous with Vincent Neumann, who shows up with a beautiful Ambient mix. The Leipzig based Distillery resident unveils two hours of intimate soundscapes, contemplative-uplifting vibrations, hazy drone-spheres, gentle rhythm accents and a consistently timeless mood. This smoothly mixed selection allows to take a deep breath, to drift away and to gain creativity. Thank you Vincent, this is essential!

Die neunte Ausgabe unserer Blitzcast-Serie kommt von Vincent Neumann, der diese in Form einer wunderbaren Ambient-Mélange präsentiert. Im Rahmen der zwei Stunden lässt der Leipziger Distillery-Resident intime Soundscapes, nachdenklich-beflügelnde Vibrations, verschwommen-definierte Drone-Sphären und behutsame Rhythmus-Akzente zu einem durchweg zeitlosen Stimmungspool verschmelzen. Blitzcast 009 — Vincent Neumann

As if by magic it's Monday. Again. How did we get here you ask? We don't have the answers but American composer and multi-instrumentalist Rafael Anton Irisarri has the perfect soundtrack to curb those inevitable beginning-of-the-week feels. 

Known for his immersive ambient productions, Irisarri has released several albums over the years with labels like Immune, A Strangely Isolated Place, Geographic North, Umor Rex and Room40, the latter two being imprints that he's returned to time and time again. Taking the form of continual compositions, his long players demonstrate his finesse at working with different techniques and textures, adding both classical and contemporary influences into the mix.

By day he works as a mastering engineer at his own Black Knoll Studio in New York, where he has prepared releases for the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Grouper and David August, as well as working regularly with labels like Ghostly International and RVNG Intl. 

Following the release of his new album Peripeteia on Dais Records in May, he blessed us with some recent soothing favourites, most of which he mastered at Black Knoll himself.

Rafael Anton Irisarri: The 'Monday Is OK' Mix

Spektron imagined a mix that plunges us into a hypnagogic state, a particular state of consciousness halfway between awakening and sleep, revealing our artistic intuition.
These musical atmospheres draw us an ocean melting in the sky, which we contemplate parading before our amazed eyes. 
A fantastic universe where the sounds form and let appear wonderful creatures swimming, light, above our heads. 
A luminous world that unveils itself timidly to us, where we glimpse riches still unknown and unsuspected born in the infinite greatness of the sky. 
A world in weightlessness where harmony seems to reign. 
A world where we want to abandon ourselves and fly away.
