The Bunker New York’s first release of 2023 comes by way of Detroit-based producer Otodojo, aka Maro Kariya. With recent releases on Brooklyn labels Unimatrix and Mesma Records, Kariya has demonstrated a concise musical vision, which draws on the natural and supernatural worlds for inspiration. Aptly titled Amphibious/Aural Spirits, the 14 track LP immerses the listener in a living, breathing world of bioluminescent textures and otherworldly environments, conjuring a sonic ecosystem all its own. Beginning with the opening track, “Amphibious Spirits,” the album states its purpose: we are now entering a world not of man but of the deeply interconnected web of flora and fauna that make up the planet’s most remote zones, where time loses its meaning and the veil dissolves into nonexistence. With each track, the record slithers and spirals its way across the electronic continuum, encompassing everything from straight ahead psychedelic techno to elevated electro, wormhole jungle and throbbing percussive bass tracks. 

Kariya cites figures and stories from Japanese folklore as inspirations. Among them, the reptilian yōkai Nure-onna, a serpent-like entity with the head of a woman, and Kunio Yanagita and Kizen Sasaki’s seminal supernatural text, Tono Monogatari, which sought to catalog legends from the country’s Tono region. Composed over the past four years, Amphibious/Aural Spirits sees Otodojo refining their vision into a complete world of creatures and myth, sewn together by razor sharp sound design, frenzied percussion, field recordings and a range of digital instruments, plugins and hardware, like the Zetaohm FLXS1 Voltage Sequencer and Blue Lantern Modules, both of which play prominently on “Spirals in the Sand” and “Molting.” Speaking on the album’s sound palette, Kariya says they “found a fascination with resonant physical modeling synths, which [they] drew analogy to ways that some insects make noise,” such as the act of stridulation, in which crickets and other insects produce a shrill creaking noise by rubbing together special bodily structures. 

On tracks like “Amphibious Spirits,” “Molting,” “Aural Spirits,” and of course “Mechanical Stridulation,” these textures come to the fore, rounding out traditional techno tropes with the cacophonous feel of a night spent in the Peruvian jungle. Punctuated by a fitting remix from Bristol-based producer, Boulderhead, this album perfectly captures the driving psychedelic ethos that has made The Bunker New York a techno institution for two decades.

The Bunker Podcast 225 comes from @scotia-xo. Currently based in Albany, she is known as one of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley's very best and most hardworking DJs, playing almost 100 gigs last year. She appeared in the Going In room at The Bunker Hudson Valley's collaborative event with T4T back in September, and is one of the resident DJs at Community Rave Network, who do a monthly party at Avalon Lounge in Catskill.

artist statement from @sisterzo:

My sound has evolved a lot over the past year living in New York. While I feel everyone knows me primarily for my percussive broken beat productions and sets, anyone who's seen me play recently will know I've been leaning heavily into driving psychedelic techno and hard groove house. So I wanted to make something that reflects my evolving tastes.

In that sense this mix is very much a statement of range and intention. I'll always love UK Bass and broken beat stuff but there's nothing like a good deep grooving wormhole to lose yourself in as a DJ and a dancer. 

Also, having been heavily involved in plant medicine this past year I've been making an effort to incorporate sounds that connect with my experiences in ceremony—sometimes light and joyous, often dark, cavernous and all-consuming. But, not to take myself or this vision too seriously, this mix is first and foremost for moving your bones and shaking ass, but in a hypnotic sort of way.

Hope you enjoy it start to finish.

Assembler Code & Jensen Interceptor - Drive Shift (The Hacker Remix) [MTRON008]

For its seventh release, Obscura - the thriving label of Italian trio Agents Of Time - returns to the compilation format to welcome exciting new talents and core label acts. 

‘East Coast’, the Agents Of Time track which opens the release, is at once tough and atmospheric, with delicate pads suspended above the rugged, syncopated rhythm. London Modular Alliance complete the A-side with an organic jam of bleeps, bass and crisp percussion. Next, Australian Jensen Interceptor contributes a fresh cut of rapid-fire electro which leads neatly into the sci-fi tones of ‘Welcome To My World’ by newcomer Golden Virgo. 

Following a full EP on Obscura earlier this year, Hiver is back with the elastic bassline and dreamy arpeggios of ‘Stasys’. Orbe, a remixer on Hiver’s EP, impresses with ‘Never Comes’, a similarly restrained and endlessly detailed journey through the depths. 

The final side is split between Laguna and Kris Wadsworth. The former tunnels further into the hypnotic side of Obscura’s sound whilst Wadsworth’s crunchy, Detroit techno ends the release on a high. With ‘From Sound To Silence 2’, Agents Of Time have compiled eight, stand-out tracks to explore the full range of their dancefloor sensibilities.

The American cable-television industry exploded in the 1980s, pushing broadcasts of diverse programming and emissions of low-laying cultures into homes. Community stations piggybacked on the digital developments of the time, extending their existence through telephony and broadcast affiliates. For those growing up in this time, in locations such as New York City, the localized communications beamed into their homes exposed them to an impressionable array of disparate sounds and visions. Move into the 1990s and New York was filled to the brim of emergent cultures drawing from this ebullition of communication. From Rammellzee’s shapeshifting to Frank and Karen Mendez’s Nu Groove imprint fusing reggae, poetry and house, nascent ideas emanated from the city walls, from within stores such as Sonic Groove store and on VHS releases such as Stakker’s The Evil Acid Baron Show, a legendary technicolor psychedelic trip along the wildest frontiers of acid house. As scenes expanded and identities developed, such individuals weather the events of the visceral now, expressing themselves right into an unpredictable future.

Function’s long career has seen him uncover a vast range of sonic identities, a mainstay through house, techno and industrial with collaborations with the likes of Regis, Damon Wild alongside his highly influential Infrastructure imprint. With influences deeply tied to pop art, rave and gay scenes, and early memories of block-parties emitting Kraftwerk and Strafe, he found himself seeking out the undercover illegal nights of the 90s on a quest of sexual unearthing, mixing the ever-yearning escapology mission of disco with the influential DJ sets of Jeff Mills. For his new album Existenz, he marks a clear step away from the corporeal techno of his recent releases. Pivoting around themes of religion, sexuality, trauma and healing, it is a work expansive and celebratory, a clear liberation from a deeply internalized past. Formed from a collection of recordings made in a period from late 2016 to mid 2019, Existenz takes the form of a creative outburst in reaction to a number of traumas - recent, childhood and throughout Function’s life.

Cosmic synths soar and swoop in ‘Pleasure Discipline’ through towering stacks of rhythm that stutter and creak to a halt before rebooting, a firm robotic response to human intervention. ‘Zahlensender’ reflects a spatial tetris of urban life, as digitalization set within an XYZ matrix confronts the sprawling city. Constant arpeggiated meditations echo synaptic transmissions, effecting a dissolution of boundaries. ’The Approach’ recalls the unification of the self, a state of delirium non-subjective and smooth, as all connections and functions give way to simple intensities of feeling, crossing the threshold into spirituality. ’Golden Dawn’, featuring Stefanie Parnow, marks a further elevation of dubbed-out euphoria, as once more positive rays emerge. Parnow assisted the production process in its entirety, providing inspiration and featuring vocal contributions. His ode to the effortless short-trip urban navigation 'Kurzstrecke' finds Function in motion, upfront and bold, snapshots of conversation and flickers of light. 'Ertrinken' finds metallic bass jabs swamping snipped synthetic voices, with hidden stores of emotion set as a nod to the history of vocoders as a tool for encrypted military communication. House icon Robert Owens features on 'Growth Cycle' and 'Be', entrenching a celebratory atmosphere over Function's clubwise leanings. Closing track 'Downtown 161' reflects the unmistakeable filtered and squashed interjections of television, and sampled dance vocals - a sound for the curious, dreamers and dancers.

With Existenz, Function reveals an essential body of work, spread over 4LP/2CD - thought experiments on the role of identity and spirituality after a lifetime of upheaval and trauma.
