About the CD:
An absolutely epic house CD released in 1996 by the fine folks at MOS. This one was actually a swap with a certain ginger friend for something else (hope he doesn't ask for it back) although it was swapped for something good so maybe it's not a bad thing. This Frankie Knuckles mix features some incredible tracks including all time favourites Ken Lou - The Bounce, Lil Mo Yin Yang - Reach, X Press 2 - The Sound and many many more. It is indeed, a banger.

About the CD:
My second ever house CD! I bought this one for my Christmas box through the Metro Centre in Newcastle if I remember correctly and it was the real catalyst for getting me into clubland and house music. Featuring artists that defied genres and  the underground/overground such as Leftfield, Living Joy, Wildchild and Inner City... this was music all of the UK was dancing too not just to cool kids. A pretty amazing time to be a young kid getting into music heavily... my biggest regret... not buying turntables!

The name of the dj and the disc's title always made it an unforgettable presence sitting on the dance section in HMV (or any other music store). And the truth is we did'nt actually pick this up until recently. After listening to it we're sure you'll agree it was one not to be missed. With it's unmistakable latin influences and summer sounds you can just imaging yourself in Ibiza as the sunsets and the lights of the clubs turn on and the island becomes alive. Big tracks from Victor Simonelli, Jasper Street Co, KenLou, Bassment Jaxx and Grupo Batuque cement this as a late 90's classic for the summer. And one of Mixmags best. Enjoy!

Mark Farina is a name much loved by many yet one who rarely makes an appearance on UK turf. Arguably the king of deep jazzy house, sprinkled with that west coast sunshine vibe. He's the man behind Om Records & Mushroom Jazz, and sit's alongside Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak on the throwns of US house music. Turn it up, and enjoy the mix.

About the CD:
So this came out of the blue in 2000 and was a new mix compilation that gained a lot of fans not just from its unique theme (what's not to like!) and retro artwork which stood out on the shelves. Not only that but the music was damn good too. Dimitri from Paris delivers a driving soulful collection which had its own unique flavour and was perfect for nights out, driving, after parties and whatever else. Shout out to Just Lance in Dubai for reminding us about this one!

So for episode 034 we had a lot of shouts after sharing the first disc on this compilation, which was the Jeremy Healy one. (Also excellent). But with so many requests it was time to get the Whitehead one up there, and after listening to again for the first time in over 10 years or so the memories of its brilliance came flooding back. It's a more soulful set with come epic vocal and feel good moments which made the mid to late 90's a much more enjoyable place to be.

So many stand out tracks but off the top of my head, Right and Exact, Tall and Handsome, Weekend, I Believe, Happiness and the highlight for me, the epic 'Sweetest Day of May' by Joe T. Vannelli Project. It's fantastically put together and a mix with truly belongs into the classic status. Whatever you're up to now Alistair... we salute you!

"You can tell when Nick Warren's on the decks. The music emanating from the DJ booth is that perfect club mix of driving percussion and soaring musicality, bursting out of the speakers, soaking everyone in melody, drenching them in sound. Warren's impressive career has seen him release the very first “Back to Mine”, a staggering eight albums for “Global Underground”, and one for “Renaissance”. He is also in control of A&R for record label Hope Recordings, as well as being a member of the highly acclaimed duo Way Out West. Starting as tour DJ with Massive Attack, moving onto a residency at super club Cream and playing at every self-respecting club on the planet, has led him to this natural position as one of the world's most respected DJs.

All this history has been eclipsed by Nick’s present: Nick continues to play out every weekend on every continent, whilst also maintaining Hope Recording's high quality output that they and Warren himself have become synonymous with; his DJ career spans two decades and is driven by a continual desire for change. His sound is forged by an enduring relationship with cutting edge producers all over the globe, in many cases long before they become established. These diverse outputs from Warren on Hope Recordings have included a remix of global pop sensation Lana Del Rey's 'Summertime Sadness' and also two breathtaking original productions 'Devil's Elbow' and 'La Fabrica', both demonstrating Warren's diverse abilities in assuming a classic timeless sound, whilst still injecting a glossy and modern slant into his powerful productions. 'Devil's Elbow' was also supported with two highly reputable remixes from Max Cooper and jozif. Max Cooper's remix was supported by an unique conceptual video and received great critical acclaim reaching No.1 in Beatport's Electronica chart.

2014 saw the release of Nick's crowd funded "The Soundgarden" album which was supported via a very successful Pledge Music campaign, giving his fans the chance to directly engage and become part of the album in many different ways. In the later part of 2014 Nick released the single "Alta / Golden Cap" through Alex Niggermans Soulfooled Recordings, the release showcasing his innate ear for melody and impeccable production skills. Nick's most recent release was his collaboration with Guy Mantzur, entitled "Sad Robot" which came out on Bedrock Recordings. The track has received support and airplay from BBC6 music. It also reached no.4 in the Beatport Techno chart. In addition to all this of this, Nick has also kept up his extensive touring schedule and has many more exciting things in the pipeline for the rest of 2015. On this exact date, 25 years ago, I received a demo in the post from a completely unknown DJ that Dan Prince, then editor of Mixmag, had told to send it to me... I know it was this date, as it was a Saturday morning before Renaissance that night. I had listened to this demo 5/6 times during the day - and again on the way to the club that night. I knew I’d found something special the moment I heard the mix between the first 2 tracks on the B side of that tape!

After Renaissance that night, as often happened, Sasha came back to my house the next morning... I told him I'd found a DJ who I thought was amazing, and went on to play him the tape. He too was blown away! The only writing on the tape was 'DJ JD’ and a phone number, so I called John after the weekend and told him I loved the tape and wanted him to play at the club, but I told him I wouldn't put 'DJ JD' on the flyers as it sounded like a rave DJ and instead wanted to bill him as John Digweed. I booked his first date on Saturday 5th September 1992 - and spent 4 weeks before his debut gig telling everyone I'd discovered this amazing DJ - and, of course, he didn't disappoint!! The whole club was blown away by the talent on show on his first night, and I then started to regularly pair him with Sasha at Renaissance, ahead of that iconic mix compilation, 2 yrs later, that took the S&D partnership global... so here's the mixtape that started it all, a piece of clubbing history and a significant footnote in Renaissance’s history and in the career of one of the world’s finest DJs!🔊🔊🔊

About the CD:
005 of the Classic Mix CD Series on Soundcloud. Another from 1996 which is probably lesser well known and even lesser played, but without doubt one of the most memorable CDs in my collection. It comes from the sublime MixMag Live series and features Roger Sanchez aka S-Man when he was at the height of his powers (or just approaching them) and the legendary DJ Pierre. I always remember tracks like "Fill Me" and "Time to Stop" from Sanchez and the euphoric "Freestyle Groove" by Full Swing... engulfing me in the US house sound. Seminal music which will never be forgotten.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
