Living in the Dutch countryside, Julien Mier spent the last several years crafting heavily melodic and carefully textured pieces that engage the listener both cognitively and emotionally. His newest EP, Changing Currents, is a culmination of his exploration of natural sounds, and ultimately serves as a final farewell to the cabin he was living in directly up to the point of this works’ completion. 

Each piece on the release serves the whole, with opening track “It’s Slightly Open” providing the introductory sounds and pacing before moving to the melodic second track “Yesterday’s Downpour.” Meditative guitar piece “Caught in the Chest” is the anchor holding everything together thematically. Slow, brooding and beautiful, the piece finds its success in its minimalistic, stripped-down approach. 

In the increasingly maximalist world of electronic music, Changing Currents confidently espouses the value of minimalism, reducing each instrument to its most rewarding timbres, and comfortably discarding the expected tropes of the genre. Every melody hints at a range of emotions all the while avoiding the awkwardness of the melodramatic. 

It’s a testament to Mier’s refinement and poise as an electronic musician. He is using the medium for something very personal, both in the places he explores and the musical techniques he uses to explore them.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have gone head to head with Cologne based house upstart Klaas for a radio edit of MATTN and Futuristic Polar Bears brilliant ‘Café Del Mar 2016’. The track, available for preview March 21st across Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music, and also available for pre-order on ITunes, sees the original elevated to new heights with an arena sized mix by the Smash the House bosses. The track will be available as part of the ‘Café Del Mar 2016’ bundle, released on April 4th and featuring a selection of different mixes and edits. Night Talk is back with another unpredictable masterpiece in his new Chimaera EP.

A chimera is something you’ve imagined that’s bits and pieces of other things swirled together into a dark but beautiful fantasy, something impossible in real life that only exists in your mind. With layers of sounds that hypnotize us, that trap our mind in order to make imaginary trips, this entrancing 3-headed creature holds us captive in its dark and mysterious atmospheres in Night Talk’s signature fashion with his forthcoming EP.

Night Talk says of this release, “I produced all tracks this winter. I went through a very emotional event in my life and for sure influenced my music. All tracks are very synth-driven, dark and atmospheric. I went through various emotions during the production process which you can hear in the three tracks. That’s why I called the EP, ‘Chimaera’. A hybrid creature from the Greek mythology a mixture between goat, lion and snake.”

The Comet Is Coming has possessed an air of inevitability almost from the word “Go”! Much like the trail-blazing name they originally lifted from a BBC Radio Workshop record, the trio has participated in a kind of Big Bang. Its immediately relentless sound demands a sense of being present in the moment yet lost within it, much like how visceral punk rock, interstellar jazz blasts, deepest dance-floor trances and real-time technological breakthroughs do. Octavia Butler once wrote that, “There is nothing newunder the sun, but there are new suns.” And on their third album, Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam, synthesist/studio-magician Danalogue, drummer-producer/intuitionist Betamax, and saxophonist/spiritual riffologist Shabaka bring her verses to life. They burn brightly, directly and confidently, soundtracking our epoch of change in ways their contemporaries simply aren’t trying to. Like great artists throughout the recorded century, they possess, in Shabaka’s words, “a sensitivity to the zeitgeist,” channeling their sound into both a mirror to our times and a potential healing process for it. If that seems like asking a lot, The Comet Is Coming is uniquely qualified. Because even by their own telling, that other-worldly power was almost instantaneous.
