Slingin Dope Vibes

Another squeeze to get 10 tracks. Where is all the good stuff these days? Too many songs sound samey and destined to not stir things up, rather than trying to push boundaries, or at least get people moving. Happily A Swayze & The Ghosts are an exception, with their dissing of social media in a garage style. Dear God, pick up the mantle, passing it to Nancy who add a psych twist, and then on to Bombay Bicycle Club. Islandis move things into dancey pop territory, before a sharp change of direction with Ondigui & Bota Tabansi International take us to west Africa. The Comet is Coming keep the sax riff going, before we go electronic with Klang Karussell, and Romare, leaving it to Michael A. Muller to bring things home in an ambient style. I'm a big fan of The Comet is Coming, but this week's favourite track is A. Sawyze & The Ghosts' "Connect to Consume" for its rowdiness, and its message, which could be a soundtrack for these times.

Images du Futur, this year's Secretly Canadian-released sophomore album from Montreal's Suuns, receives fittingly edgy remix treatment from Canada's premier electronic label, Turbo Recordings. The nationalistic pride ends there, however, as the remixers are strictly European.

Leading the charge are Scottish techno prodigies Clouds, arguably the most important artists to emerge on the roster of Tiga's 15 year strong imprint since Duke Dumont and Gesaffelstein rose to stardom. Their remix is a brooding stomper that reflects the development of their sound in the concrete wonderland of the UK's underground scene. It's not bright or obvious, but, as with their recently released debut lp, it's a rewardingly profound listen for what is essentially a club-shaking DJ tool.

Fellow 'New Jack Techno' cohort joeFarr turns in two stellar versions built around massive distorted kick drums, already on the hype radar since Tiga kicked off his acclaimed Boiler Room set with the second of the two, a decidedly more clubby effort while the first mix chugs along at a slower tempo, leaving extra space for all the grit and grime of his heavily textured sounds.

Finally, French DJ-journeyman Ivan Smagghe weighs in with a pair as well… firstly converting 2020 into a style all his own, a kind of zombie cowboy march as It's A Fine Line (alongside Tim Paris)… and, even more finally, with a brilliant re-edit of an older track on Suuns's catalog, Up Past the Nursery. It's a deep, after-hours epic and surely the most accessible and pop moment on the EP, sure to fit in equally well into the sets of house DJs as well as late-night loft-party hipsters.

The Comet Is Coming has possessed an air of inevitability almost from the word “Go”! Much like the trail-blazing name they originally lifted from a BBC Radio Workshop record, the trio has participated in a kind of Big Bang. Its immediately relentless sound demands a sense of being present in the moment yet lost within it, much like how visceral punk rock, interstellar jazz blasts, deepest dance-floor trances and real-time technological breakthroughs do. Octavia Butler once wrote that, “There is nothing newunder the sun, but there are new suns.” And on their third album, Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam, synthesist/studio-magician Danalogue, drummer-producer/intuitionist Betamax, and saxophonist/spiritual riffologist Shabaka bring her verses to life. They burn brightly, directly and confidently, soundtracking our epoch of change in ways their contemporaries simply aren’t trying to. Like great artists throughout the recorded century, they possess, in Shabaka’s words, “a sensitivity to the zeitgeist,” channeling their sound into both a mirror to our times and a potential healing process for it. If that seems like asking a lot, The Comet Is Coming is uniquely qualified. Because even by their own telling, that other-worldly power was almost instantaneous.
