Yesterday I had the absolute honour of playing at Quest vs Amazon in Birmingham, on a lineup with jungle legends Micky Finn, Hype, JJ Frost, Simon Bassline Smith, Fallout, Ned Ryder, Kenny Ken and MCs like Magika, Stixman, Det, Juiceman, Ranski & more.

Anyone who follows my soundcloud knows how much I love Quest so when I found out I was playing I had to put together a set of ONLY music played at Quest 1992 to 1994! It was a warmup set so nothing too hectic but I wanted to play a set of tunes that represented Quest, with a nod to both jungle and hardcore. My set was only 45 mins so I extended it a bit today and played a few more...enjoy!

Justin Time was of the few artists that consistently delivered through the ‘golden years’ of Happy Hardcore. 
When the genre was pushing towards it’s peak in 1995, Justin Time concentrated predominantly on the production side of things and how well that paid off. He was the perfect example of an artist’s progression through Hardcore, from the early breakbeat years to the heavier kick drums of the late 90’s. Justin Time definitely had his own unique style, exploring a much more original approach to the happy sound. Accomplishing a perfectly layered mix of bass, strings and of course, his trademark, heavenly pianos. 
I’ve tried to avoid from playing the usual Triple J anthems (and controversially Here I Am, which is a huge favourite of mine) in which he was a huge influential part of, alongside Jimmy J & vocalist Jennifer Bolton, even though they are obviously some of the finest Happy Hardcore records. Another record which absolutely fits that category is, the exceptional ‘U R Everything’. In my opinion, one of Hardcore’s elite ‘Choonz’. This serious track pushed boundaries and ironically has everything. That unique kick, classic pianos and hectic stabs complement one another superbly. The tense build in the 1st section of this track is incredible. Then add the rare, mixed male and female vocals and you get is a masterpiece. It really is ….’LARGE!’. 

His Helix alias took things to the next level. Being one of the early Freeform pioneers in the mid to late 90’s confirms Justin Time’s place in my Hall Of Fame.

Time for (some of) my favourite Breakbeat Hardcore tracks from 2022, its been a good year although I did miss out on a lot because they were tied to expensive box sets/random labels/just missed them etc but its a good problem to have, like the old days, I did also get the Jimmy J and Cru-l-t box set just after I did this mix (typical) so I've done another Breakbeat Mix since ...... I've also got lots to come in 2023 including Hard Trance Classics vol 10, Retro Hardcore vol 4, a pure cheddar mix, a 98-99 Hardcore & Hard Trance Mix and a 90's Gabber/Technodrome Mix plus others, so Jan/Feb looks good (music wise at least), hopefully 2023 is a good year …….anyway enjoy !

Dream Magazine was launched in 1995 covering the UK happy hardcore rave scene. By mid-1997 the magazine had diversified to cover other styles of dance music and also had a mix-CD on the front every month, typically featuring happycore, old skool hardcore, D&B or trancecore. The magazine shut down in early 1998 but relaunched as Dream UK Magazine in October of the same year, still with a monthly cover-disc, but only lasted for half a dozen issues.

This was an epic free CD to get, me and my Twin Brother absolutely smashed it out. We didn't get introduced to Happy Hardcore until 1996, so we'd missed out hearing a large number of these amazing tracks, it was the first time we'd actually heard the majority of them as Old Skool sets weren't really a thing in 1996. As you can imagine our heads were nearly blown off when we heard these great Breakbeat driven tunes. Plenty of Piano's and hands in the air drops on this CD and the standard of the tracklist speaks for itself, absolutely amazing.
