Hey everyone on the Internetz -- I've been so damn busy re-jigging the studio over the past month that I didn't have time to get on the turntables until yesterday… I hopped on them suckers, hit record and here are the fruits of that affair for your listening pleasure. All done in one take, no preparation, just a erratic journey into the mind of a beat obsessed, scratchaholic OCD record junkie with a super short attention span. A lot of ground is covered on this mix… a gang of samples, both used and unused, library records, soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, australian records, japanese stuff, drum breaks, b-boy breaks, bongo breaks, turntablist works, electronic stuff, some mega RAER acapella blends with funk loops on the fly… 

I hope you all enjoy this series… I'm trying to take what I learned from that Soulman World Of Beats 2 mixtape back in the day that started me on this beat mission. The mix that started it all. Makossa Classics initially came about as a 30 minute demo that I used to give to venues and promoters when I was looking for gigs. The mix consisted of some of my favorite songs I was playing at a new Tuesday weekly in Oakland called "Makossa" with my partner Joe Quixx. I thought the types of music we were mixing and the way we played them were unique and I wanted to capture that. I always got a good response when I would play the demo for friends so on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of our Makossa party I decided to add 30 more minutes and make it an official mix as a giveaway at the party. Long story short the response was great, Makossa traveled across the Bay and across the country to New York, and Vol. 2 came to light a couple of years later. For those that have only heard Vol. 2 and are hearing this for the first time I'm sure the voicemail intro will make a little more sense now. Hope you enjoy! -Wonway

"Raphael Saadiq is the Neo Soul and R&B producer, arranger and songwriter of a generation, yet criminally unsung. I simply wanted to shine a light on known, and some unknown, involvement of his in music over the years, from uptempo Soul of his own to his signature Two Step sound. 

Raphael's solo work needs no introduction, having redefined his sound over the years, remaining consistently current without loosing his era-defining, Soulaquarian-Neo-Soul feel. But his work with others artists is fascinating, linch-pinning so many killer R&B records whilst remaining forever background and humble.

There is a fascinating story told by Solange Knowles, of a misplaced Saadiq beat CD, which eventually lead to the makings, Grammy Award winning, Cranes In The Sky (Song Exploder, 2017). The Grammy captures Raphael’s nature perfectly, by not attending and opting out of the limelight.

In an age of pop superstars and egos, it’s heartwarming seeing someone who’s intrinsic to the music we love, so down to earth. For the heads, there is an obvious exemption of any Ummah records, of which Raphael was an occasional member, however with exact individual involvement on each Ummah record such a grey area, that tribute mix alone is best saved for another time..."

After the huge reaction to his ‘Disco Doctor’ mix Spin Doctor keeps it soulful again as he explains:

“In the midst of a 2 week Corona Virus Isolation I'm thinking about good music to bring us through and what better than the sweet sound of Soul. I put together a few of my fave soulful cuts. Not all strictly soul but definitely soulful! Music to lift the spirit and maybe move the body from Al Green, Roy Ayers, Prince, Mary J and more.

I'd finished the mix with the incredible “Wake Up Everybody” which felt very right given the current pandemic situation but soon as I had finished the mix I heard the tragic news about Bill Withers (RIP).

That hit me hard so I took a moment and shed a tear. Bill's one of my favourite artists ever and so I had to add a little 3 tune Bill Withers mix to the end of what was already a finished mix opening with ‘I’ll Be With You’ and it’s apt opening line of Bill singing… ‘I’ll be with you till heaven comes and takes me away’.

My daughter slept in our room for the first 5 months of her life (she actually slept in our bed in my wife's arms for the first 3 months).  During these first 5 months, it was lights outs at the Mixes household at around 8pm where my wife and I would just lay still hoping that nothing would wake the baby.  It was during these nights that this mix was created.  I spent hours on end, night after night, listening to massive amounts of music playing through my headphones.  Much of the music playing in my headphones during this time was music that I probably would have never listened to under more ordinary circumstances.  As I would engage in the nightly ritual of listening to music, I would take notes in my iphone's notepad to identify which songs I thought would blend well with each other.  Once my wife and I were able to transition my daughter to her own room I was able to finagle some turntable time for myself while she slept to actually lay the mix down (mostly in headphones of course).
