This is the first in a new monthly series I'm hoping to do for 2022: "Knowledge Breaks." Each episode will be a short mix of breakbeats and samples from my collection, overlaid with excerpts from some of my favorite inspirational, radical people. 

When I was thinking of who to feature first, my partner Bina made the great suggestion of starting with the incredible bell hooks, who sadly passed last month. bell hooks wrote about love, Black liberation, feminism, and so much more. Her book "All About Love" was and is very important to me. I highly recommend everyone seek out her work, especially those involved in the educational or academic fields. There is no way to do justice to legendary people like bell hooks in such a short little mix. These are just a few excerpts I found compelling. The goal of this mixtape series is after a year, have a nice little compilation of voices, beats, breaks and knowledge. I hope everyone digs it, and searches out more from all of those featured. Rising Dutch producer Afroham releases ‘Online’, his final single before the release of debut EP ‘Quantum Love’. The 26-year-old musician from Rotterdam is fusing neo-soul, lofi and hip-hop in his very own style and fashion. ‘Online’ features Swiss singer Djemeia, best known for her work with Melodiesinfonie and Slum Village. 

On ‘Quantum Love’, Afroham (and a close group of musical friends) addresses love and rejection in the digital age, topics Millennials and Gen Z are oh so familiar with. Appropriately, Afroham and singer Ginge (who appears on two tracks) first met on Tinder and started dating. But instead of becoming a couple they ended up writing songs together. Further guests on ‘Quantum Love’ include producers/musicians Cocabona, Ian Ewing, Birocratic and Misha (all household names on the international beat & lofi scene). 

Born Nathan Avraham, Afroham's artist name is a playful take on his surname and his hairdo. His superpowers also include creating visual art via video and 3d animation (despite being colourblind). Afroham has directed and animated a full-length movie that accompanies the release of the EP and its three singles. The artwork for all four releases comes from Parisian artist MC Blue Matter who in turn was inspired by the “Quantum Love” film when he worked on the covers. 

Afroham has released a sling of successful singles on labels like Steezyasfuck and Chillhop (where he also works during daytime). His current playlist has music from artists like H.E.R., SiR, J. Dilla, Men I Trust & Mndsgn.

Tell Me Something Good by Sweet Forgiveness

The Du-Rites are a funk duo comprised of Jay Mumford and Pablo Martin. Pablo on guitar and bass guitar; Jay on drums and percussion. They split the keyboard/synthesizer duties. Individually, Pablo plays guitar with the legendary Tom Tom Club and spent years as a mastering engineer. Jay has worked as a drummer live and/or in studio for Danger Mouse, Adrian Quesada, Dan Auerbach, Binky Griptite(Daptone), Soul Supreme, Just Blaze, Lord Finesse and many others, as well as being sampled by Madlib ("Road of the Lonely Ones"), Mark Ronson and others. In addition to four studio albums, one live album, an EP and seven 7" singles under their own name, The Du-Rites have worked with a wide range of talents since their inception in 2016, including Eddie Palmieri, Robert Glasper and Ghostface Killah. They also scored a large portion of the original music for Bobbito Garcia's Rock Rubber 45s film.
