Hey! Thanks for listening to the FREAK SHOW mixtape! I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to listen to (and hopefully enjoy) my music. I’ve said before that this is just the beginning. And trust me, I’m just warming up! This description is gonna be a little longer, because I have come to realize a lot of things during the creation of this EP. If you’re curious as to what I’ve learned throughout this process, and more about me in general, keep reading.


On the legacy of a teenager:

Two of these songs, CALAMARI and WORKING OUT! Were both produced/written/recorded (the whole thing) in about two days back in November 2018. Of all the things I’ve made when I was a teenager (I’m 20 at the time of writing this), these two songs are the last from that time of my life that I’ll be releasing formally. I think part of the reason why they work so well (at least to me) is because I genuinely had fun making them. I was just messing around over Thanksgiving break, trying new ideas, and I listen to a lot of rap/hiphop/rnb music, so I thought I’d give it a go. I remember while I was making these songs, I was completely isolated and was without judgement from anyone around me. I just made what I wanted to make. It wasn’t forced, I just hit this sort of flow state and everything kind of poured out at once. 

On the relationship between music and the artist:

It’s only in that flow state that purely good things can be created. Inhibitions down, creativity pulsing, nothing can stop you. But the moment you bring your guard back up and second guess yourself, that’s when things stop working. I remember I had about 5 or 6 more songs I wanted to record, but all of them lost that spark of creativity because I was trying to be overly intentional about what I was making. That’s not to say that there isn’t a time for real intentional song writing, but for this project I knew it had to be a little more spontaneous to capture that kind of spunk and bit of whimsy that you hear in these songs. I’ve only been doing this for about a year and a half, and the moment music changed for me was when I started treating it like a relationship. As a musician, I’ve learned that you have to care for your craft, not just in the sense of oh - I’m interested in this so I’ll pursue it, more like you have to take care of your music, listen to its needs, and try to respond to those needs as best you can. The moment I realized that the more you give to music the more it gives back, that was the moment that everything changed.

With each new release, my anxiety and fear of not being “good enough,” increases, and with this project, even more so because it’s a new genre for me. It’s a little weird for someone who has only released indie stuff to suddenly drop a melodic pop rap project haha, and I realize that. I’m thankful for those who helped me during this musical transition, even if it ultimately is just for this project. 

Thank you to graham, for constantly inspiring me to fall deeper in love with music, and for pushing my art, and our sounds, forward. And thank you to smiling boy., for being pure in ambition and intention, and for showing me how important versatility is.

It’s because of these two, as well as the rest of the Loud House, (and especially Kicksie), that I’ve learned the importance of musical friendship and community. Where I live I haven’t found anyone nearly as passionate about making music as you all are, and I can tell this is the start of an excellent future.
