February has arrived and we've decided to go with something a little different for episode 21 of the Phonica Mix Series. Andrew Weatherall is a legend of the UK music scene and also one of our regulars here at the shop. We've always considered him to have a finely tuned ear and he loves to dig for music across all genres and styles. We always wanted him to contribute to the series and this month's episode is one of the most original submissions we've had as it doesn't contain a single track of House & Techno which is arguably the main sound our shop has become associated with. There isn't much that hasn't already been said about this legendary producer, DJ and master remixer so we've decided to let the music do the talking here. Here you'll find an eclectic mix that includes everything from slow-mo Patrick Cowley cuts to afro rhythms from William Onyeabor and mid 80's cold wave from Nagamatzu.

Prins Thomas - Feel The Love

There's something cooking in Marseille... La Dame Noir, a DJ bar, label and club that has called the picturesque Vieux Port home since 2009, has been instrumental in channeling the electronic explosion that's taken hold of the city, armed with an unfailable DIY spirit and flying the flag for a slow-mo dark disco sound that slots neatly in the Tel Aviv, Vilnius and Berlin continuum.

La Dame Noir's label has over the years played host to the likes of Zombies in Miami and Iñigo Vontier but for their first release of the year they welcome long-time resident Did Virgo, who has been doing his thing behind the decks since the early 90s and whose music draws inspiration from David Bowie, Talking Heads and the hip hop movement.

"Rise & Shine" stands out as one of the strongest works from the Marseille producer. The 5 track EP was produced in collaboration with Arthur Johnson, vocalist Alta, and comes completed by a Max Pask remix. It perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere of La Dame Noir: music for late nights and tripped-out minds, informed by the genealogy of nu-disco and ever dance floor ready.

Hey everyone, this week I have something very special for you.  It’s a Deep Dish set from Pacha Ibiza last year, where Dubfire and I played for the 20th anniversary of Deep Dish at Pacha.  The night was hosted by Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth residency and we had an amazing time.  If you don’t know, we are reuniting this month for both weekends of Coachella and a special open to close set at Sound in Los Angeles.  I hope to see you there. Following on from the last “Live in Tokyo” compilation, John Digweed's next album acts as a celebration but also a landmark release. Output in Brooklyn has been one of the shining lights in clubland with its forward thinking policies and attention to detail with mind blowing sound and lighting. Having been a regular behind the decks since it opened and having released a “Live in Brooklyn” album over 2 years ago you could say I have a real love for this space. When it was announced that the club was closing and I would be playing the very last set there I had so many mixed emotions from sadness to joy and an overwhelming pressure to deliver a party that a club of that stature deserves. I really put my heart and soul into that party drawing from my favourite tracks over the years.

The set seemed to fly by and there was just a constant sea of smiling faces from the dance floor all night long as the crowd literally savoured every record on that crystal clear sound system.  After listening back to the set I knew this album had to come out and not just be another mix online. It deserved to be part of peoples music collection and a memento for years to come. We have managed to licence 6 cd’s worth of music from the night.  I hope you can immerse yourself in one of my favourite sets in NY for years.

The colourful distinctive packaging designed to celebrate Output's last night comes with a special die cut slipcase, box, wallets, CD combining to create the layers of a vortex. The album spans 6 compact discs with sleeve notes included in an 8 page booklet.

We are a couple of months on the way and we had some legendary nights with legends Eddy De Clercq, Cinnaman, Nuno. The mix was recorded on the day of Andrew Weatherall’s last ever gig at A Love From Outer Space at the White Hotel in Manchester 08.02.20. It was an amazing gig. I spoke to him at the end and he loved the venue and the crowd. I’m so glad he enjoyed himself at his last ever gig. God bless you Captain.
