It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Berlin’s Fabian Krooss (@fabiankrooss). What started with his 2018 release via Nicone’s Dantze imprint has since seen the likes of Einmusika Recordings, Rebellion der Träumer, Serafin Audio Imprint, and Trndmsk hosting his playfully positive sounds. In fact, just last month he released an outstanding 6 track EP via Stil vor Talent and solidified his position in our music world. A longtime friend of The Gardens of Babylon (TGOB), you may remember him from his much-lauded 2018 The Monastery performance. Since, he has been a TGOB podcast staple, releasing no less than 3. Of course, Fabian Krooss doesn’t only represent TGOB! Clubs like Sisyphos and festivals including Wilde Möhre and Feel Festival have all felt his minimalistic yet complex DJ sets.

2020 was set to be something of a breakout year for Fabian. With his stacked release schedule and rising name recognition, the future was all but certain until it wasn’t. We all know the realities of 2020, turning many once staple activities into nothing more than pipe dreams affecting all, near and far. For Fabian, however, this was no deterrent. In buckling down in the studio, experimenting with different tools and techniques, something new emerged: a synergy of both personal and production growth. The result channels all of this, turning those pipe dreams of despair into ones of eager anticipation. And with that, Fabian Krooss returns to the Gardens of Babylon with his first label release.

Pipe Dreams is an interpretation of our times. In the absence of what we hold dear – dancing, friends, endless nights – life as we are used to seems like just that. Along these lines, the EP’s A-side Pie in the Sky is an unpredictable, deep dive into fantasy. Introducing new elements just when you thought you knew what to expect. Throughout, beauty meets crazy, shifting it from a place of peace to one of unparalleled euphoria. Next, Kaleidoscope is one of those tracks perfect for both at home listening and dancefloor grooving. Like its namesake, Kaleidoscope sparkles with a multitude of color and emotion. Remix duties come from a pair of talented German dancefloor masters. First off, Iorie (@iorie) takes on Pie in the Sky with his Late Night Thoughts interpretation. It is one for the wee hours and beyond. The Cioz (@cioz) remix of Kaleidoscope rounds the EP out, maintaining the dreamy feel of the original but cutting and slicing elements into something entirely its own.

With Pipe Dreams, Fabian Krooss provides The Gardens of Babylon’s fifth 2021 release. Joining Zigan Aldi, Spaniol, Mâhfoud, Amine K & Kadosh, Pipe Dreams is organic, energetic, melodic and a little crazy... a perfect fit with The Gardens of Babylon family.

Fabian Krooss - Kaleidoscope (Cioz Remix)

Berlin-based storyteller Powel has spoiled us.

He delivers four completely unique records, each knocking through the speakers with fierce percussion, and melodies that glide and fly, carrying the listener off to somewhere else. On each cut, he exhibits his mastery of joyful keys and exquisite drum programming, never missing the opportunity to craft delicious, exciting grooves that are sure to ring out around clubs worldwide.

The title track, RAD, shares the same name as the 1986 film, which inspired the EP, and it takes us on a progressive journey, with beautiful synth pads and subtle vocal manipulations layered over a strong, knocking drum beat that builds in intensity as the track progresses.

Not content with stopping there, Powel cuts in and out with stunning synth lines and a snare drum that instantly makes your head bounce — a statement of intent for the quality of music that is to follow on this EP.

The project's second song, Out Of Fashion, instantly catches the listener's attention with a stiff, marching beat, eerie stabs and a manipulated vocal sample that swings around the drums. But quickly, the vocoder melts into a gorgeous, pulsating synth line that is urgently propelled along by the percussion towards its crescendo.

Then we're transported deep into Powel's mind for the third cut, where he treats us to a gorgeous slice of melodic goodness on Wine & Cigarettes. It is good-natured and has an old-school groove that grips you and promises to never let go.

And suddenly, just like that, we reach Ode To A Carrot, which takes the form of a euphoric dream, set in a warehouse party in the 90s. Powel serves us a fat, squelchy bassline that is unlike anything else we have heard from him before.

Meshed with wavy pads and a pounding kick drum to create a funky dancefloor anthem, this acts as the perfect closer for a body of work that speaks volumes about a producer who seems incapable of producing mediocre music.

As if that wasn't already enough, the EP is complete with a remix package featuring Haider Uppal and Timo Chinala, Mark Slee, Lauren Ritter, and Brigade. Again, each remix takes the original track in a completely unexpected direction, delighting the listener and highlighting every moment of joy from Powel's original creations.

In 2020, Uone and Western released a ten-track manifesto of cinematographic desert house, ‘The Lone Wranglers’. The album – every instrumental element of which was recorded live – set a bold precedent for would-be soundtrackers of dust-ridden doofs. In ‘Desert Fire’ (the duo’s first release since their ‘Lone Wranglers’ album), they return with a stripped and earnest sound, distilling their vision-questing aesthetic to its essence.

At home among the most low-riding elements of ‘The Lone Wranglers’, ‘Desert Fire’ holds onto the apocalyptic intensity that characterises Uone and Western’s sound, with a violin lead, sweeping dub pads and vocal snippets uniting to form something filmic and visionary. Fittingly, the track samples Jarmusch’s 1995 psychedelic Western, ‘Dead Man’, an ambitious project that burst with prophetic literary allusions. And for a production that hints at the day of reckoning, there’s a surprising optimism to ‘Desert Fire’, which culminates on this parched line from the film’s protagonist: ‘The only man who’s got the guts to sell his soul for love and the power to change the world.’

On the flipside, Anjunadeep favourite Elif delivers a remix that’s DJ-friendly but laconic, cutting the violin and pitched percussion to let the piano chords cavort alongside Elif’s bewildering synth-lead arabesques – some of the more complex programming you’re likely to hear on a festival floor this season. The cerebral Istanbul-born producer has rocked festivals from Amsterdam to Tulum, and this understated B-side combines her understanding of dancefloor dynamics and music theory.

Noraj Cue returns home to Happy Camper Records to introduce his latest musical adventure ‘Inner Glitch’, a fantastic full length album series. It comes as an emblematic sampler on vinyl followed by a trilogy of digital releases.

This Dutch artist likes organic sounds filled with real world dust and compelling grooves. He explores every corner of the house realm and always makes musical stories that keep you locked. Constantly tinkering with drum and synth, Noraj Cue has applied his unique talent for experimentation to one studio and one album. And in a career that spans 15 years, his creative touch has impacted the EP's of Tale and Tone, Katermukke and Connaisseur Recordings.

Noraj Cue offers up a musical thesis with Inner Glitch. He explores what he posits is the three aspects that comprise the being of human beings. He suggests that in life we are either presenting our outer self (polished, camouflaged, rehearsed), our inner self (vulnerable, protective, emotional) or our core self (connected to life itself and fundamental to the fulfilment of our self-expression). His music explores the amorphous space of each self and the indistinct places they meet. "Your feelings and perceptions, is that you? Or are these them?” The exploration of which has taken this courageous artist on a musical epic. And now, simply by closing your eyes after hitting play, so can you.

Things kick off with the lush deep house synth-scapes of 'This Won't Last' and take in wonky melodic grooves like 'Bloody Musicbox,' chunky tribal drums on 'Red Throated Diver' and dubby minimal like 'Stoffig.'

Following remixes & EP's on Tale & Tone, UnderYourSkin, Klassified and Supernature in 2019, this majestic new album touches on a wide span of moods and flavours, and shows off this Dutch artist's unique sonic vision and fine synth skills in real style.

Toronto-based artist juSt b has spent the better part of the last seven years dedicated to refining a diverse palette and style which is unquestionably, uniquely her own. As an accomplished DJ, radio show host, label manager, published writer, industry ambassador, and genuine story teller, with no shortage of curveballs in her repertoire, she’s never afraid to take risks and explore new avenues of expression. With a top-rated monthly DIFM show - Undercurrents, and three European tours in 2019, she also acts as co-manager for Getting Deeper and recently joined forces with Alexander Church to head up Configurations of Self.

Yorkshire-based producer & sound designer Alexander Church is an adventurous artist, on the scene since the mid 90s, making everything from melodic soundscapes to industrial techno under a range of aliases. Without setting any creative boundaries, he draws consistent inspiration from his own deep thinking and desire to tell a personal story. 

His Configurations of Self imprint, fusing academic teachings, music, and passion for visual media, has grown signifi-cantly since its inception in early 2019, seeing frequent guest appearances by the likes of Jody Barr & James Welsh. Each piece of music represents emotional responses to the processes, feelings, and self-awareness that Church has experienced through his study of psychology and counselling. 

This new release, Configurations 12, features juSt b’s smooth, thought-provoking and mindful vocals inspired by hu-manistic view points that both artists share, delivered as life-affirming musings that add a fantastic layer of emotional depth and positivity to Church’s always avant-garde futurist productions. 

The opener ‘In The Field’ swirls with spoken word vocals that place you in a dream-like state as harmonica pads ripple all around and deep, smooth beats move you onwards. An instrumental is included which makes for just as celestial and cathartic listening as you are suspended in the lush production. 

The second superb offering, ‘Curious Paradox’, is another post-rave mix of IDM, techno and ambient, with the alluring vocal element fusing teachings from renowned psychologist, Carl Rogers, encouraging you to accept who you are today so that change becomes easier. It’s a deeply uplifting trip to the outer edges of our galaxy on gorgeously mellifluous pads, arps and melodies. The instrumental strips back the track to the mind-expanding synth work and makes for an even more detached affair. 

These are tracks that connect on a mental as well as physical level, with moving psychological overtones that make them full body experiences.
