It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Berlin’s Fabian Krooss (@fabiankrooss). What started with his 2018 release via Nicone’s Dantze imprint has since seen the likes of Einmusika Recordings, Rebellion der Träumer, Serafin Audio Imprint, and Trndmsk hosting his playfully positive sounds. In fact, just last month he released an outstanding 6 track EP via Stil vor Talent and solidified his position in our music world. A longtime friend of The Gardens of Babylon (TGOB), you may remember him from his much-lauded 2018 The Monastery performance. Since, he has been a TGOB podcast staple, releasing no less than 3. Of course, Fabian Krooss doesn’t only represent TGOB! Clubs like Sisyphos and festivals including Wilde Möhre and Feel Festival have all felt his minimalistic yet complex DJ sets.

2020 was set to be something of a breakout year for Fabian. With his stacked release schedule and rising name recognition, the future was all but certain until it wasn’t. We all know the realities of 2020, turning many once staple activities into nothing more than pipe dreams affecting all, near and far. For Fabian, however, this was no deterrent. In buckling down in the studio, experimenting with different tools and techniques, something new emerged: a synergy of both personal and production growth. The result channels all of this, turning those pipe dreams of despair into ones of eager anticipation. And with that, Fabian Krooss returns to the Gardens of Babylon with his first label release.

Pipe Dreams is an interpretation of our times. In the absence of what we hold dear – dancing, friends, endless nights – life as we are used to seems like just that. Along these lines, the EP’s A-side Pie in the Sky is an unpredictable, deep dive into fantasy. Introducing new elements just when you thought you knew what to expect. Throughout, beauty meets crazy, shifting it from a place of peace to one of unparalleled euphoria. Next, Kaleidoscope is one of those tracks perfect for both at home listening and dancefloor grooving. Like its namesake, Kaleidoscope sparkles with a multitude of color and emotion. Remix duties come from a pair of talented German dancefloor masters. First off, Iorie (@iorie) takes on Pie in the Sky with his Late Night Thoughts interpretation. It is one for the wee hours and beyond. The Cioz (@cioz) remix of Kaleidoscope rounds the EP out, maintaining the dreamy feel of the original but cutting and slicing elements into something entirely its own.

With Pipe Dreams, Fabian Krooss provides The Gardens of Babylon’s fifth 2021 release. Joining Zigan Aldi, Spaniol, Mâhfoud, Amine K & Kadosh, Pipe Dreams is organic, energetic, melodic and a little crazy... a perfect fit with The Gardens of Babylon family.

For our agricultural publishing house he dived deep into his creative mindset and manufactured 4 marvelous songs. When emotional stories are retold, they often change their direction. Sydney's carefully crafted pieces were entrusted to Miret and Timboletti who both realigned all expectations. The result is nothing less but a pretty perfect soundtrack for a lot of memorable moments which await us.

Following a cascade drop of singles that kept everyone on their toes this past couple of months, time has come to unveil Fabian Krooss' eagerly awaited debut long-player, 'Colorfuel'. A portmanteau word for the vivid colourful spectrum that infuses Krooss' blends and that role of energetic provider it plays, 'Colorfuel' oozes a vibrant mix of dance floor-ready dynamism and effervescing curiosity, packed with surprises at every corner. Completed and finished in the Autumn of 2023, Krooss' debut album takes you on a smooth journey from start to finish, showing the variety in his productions, spanning from melancholic to uplifting, playful to funky and deep to chill. Starting with the soulful 'Oh Darlin', Krooss steers us on the path of laid-back Chicagoan rhythms and feelgood Afro soulfulness, weaving solar-powered sensitivity with vaporous floor dynamics to hypnotic effect. A further balmy slice of atmospheric electronica tinged with hints of dream-pop and balearic house, "Staring" cruises at its own tranquil pace across colour-shifting horizons and gently jagged reliefs. Pumping out an exquisite blend of sluggish house jack alongside archetypal Andalusian flavours and bass-driven manoeuvres, 'Phoenix' (feat. Frida Darko) ticks all the boxes of a festival season-ready chugger, whereas 'Move Your Booty' relies on a slightly more low-slung melody and further languid swing. All in bounce and playfulness, 'Your Soul' pulls out a bass-heavy chassis mounted with EBM synths' firepower, nostalgic riffs and orient-flavoured melodic flights, injecting a sense of spiritual elevation to its solid club-focussed engineering. Drawing in a more subdued palette of rhythmic elements, sprinkled with an eerie melody and stripped-back synth funk, 'Inside of Me' makes for a perfect transition track, with 'Manaki' going a further jagged route, as Krooss draws further deep into the Italo style, infusing his stellar arps and brittle piano chords with a thick FX gravy. Contorting itself at the junction of straightforward jack and a more prog-minded construction that seem tailored for stadiums, 'Elasticity' (with Atish) finds Krooss at his most precise and adroitly versatile. Beaming up unadulterated joy and sunrays across its six minute-ish ride, 'Coquin' bounces back and forth, ushering us into a jam-packed hacienda where the thick volutes of freshly lit havanas coalesce with the exhilarating scent of ron. A trippy ride down memory lane, 'Back To The Oldschool' conjures up images and components straight out the 90s, buzzing with that fun swash of hip-hop and tech-tinged hybrid. A delicate slab of balearic-informed deep house, 'Mtende' serves up a lascivious mishmash of coastal iridescence and sub-Saharan style polyrhythms. Topping off that broad sweep across house's manifold colour chart, 'Tied In Knots' (feat. Harry Charles) treats us to an elevating mix of Spanish guitars and 303-marinated acid bass, taking us from classicism up the modernist ladder in the blink of an eye.

‘Music is my anchor, my passion, my favorite form of expression’, Fabian says, adding: ‘I want to surprise’. It’s this belief in freedom that drives his work as an artist, unafraid to experiment and craft a profoundly personal sound in the process. A juxtaposition often sits at the heart of his tracks, as Fabian sprinkles lush or mischievous melodies over springy, sometimes elastic and other times static rhythms, nodding to organic and minimal house at once. It’s Fabian’s deep-rooted feeling for sound that fuse these disparate motifs into an irresistible whole as his productions unfold and flourish with intricate details and surprising touches, always united under a tight groove.

All of these addictive attributes are equally omnipresent when Fabian helms the booth – with a nonchalance rooted in pure joy that’s perceivable in an instant. Here, again, he intrinsically becomes the storyteller, weaving an authentic narrative while turning the room upside down. Whether that’s with a sunny selection at Sisyphos Strand, peak-time power at Bucht der Träumer, Wilde Möhre or Feel Festival or a dubbed-out affair for Afterhour Sounds. While by no means a recent presence in Berlin with past gigs at favourites like Kater Blau, Sisyphos, or Ritter Butzke, the last years took Fabian further afield to festivals like The Monastery, Bucht der Träumer, Feel, scene highlight ADE or shows around the world in Oaxaca, Tulum, Zanzibar, New York, Miami, Washington, Seattle, Istanbul, Amsterdam and many more.
