RELEASES - The Gardens of Babylon Records

Born in London, raised in Thailand, and now based in Berlin, Aaroon possesses a worldliness that inexorably manifests itself in his music by informing both emotional breadth and stylistic diversity. The DJ and producer’s E.P. Cry for Kashmir is simultaneously a statement on half-forgotten crises occurring around the world, an optimistic nudge towards global peace, and a testament to the power of art, created on the belief that music can physically affect anything from a human brain down to the structure of a snowflake. Feeling, technical dexterity, and raw emotional expression play out across the “little stories” of this release, as Aaroon puts it.

Next up for The Gardens of Babylon, the super smooth sounds of Gab Rhome (@gabrhome) on the ‘I’ve Made The Bed For You’ EP ably supported by Francesca Lombardo (@francesca-lombardo), Baham (@bahamcollective) and Sorä (@sora-paris).

Canadian sensation Gab Rhone has come a long way since breaking onto the scene in 2013 with a release on Guy Gerber’s Supplemental Facts label. Starting out as a DJ in his hometown, it wasn’t long before his natural ability was recognised and he quickly progressed into the big leagues, with music now signed to everyone from Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream to Sasha’s Last Night On Earth.

Capturing those warm analogue feels with soft melody is a trademark for Gab, who unleashes more delight with opener ‘I’ve Made The Bed For You’. Groovy hats, a swinging bassline and sweet vocals make this a joy to hear from start to finish. On remix duties UK-based Francesca Lombardo deepens the groove for a late-night wig out, teasing the main motifs into a darker sound. Fellow Canadians, Baham, create a new atmosphere with their sparse, jazz-influenced take. Sombre muted trumpet and vocal word samples take this to new heights.

Moving on to their second original production, ‘Chandelier Cleaner, a disco-y bongo groove and saw-toothed bass lead the way. Vocodered vocals midway add a nice curveball for the more refined floors. Sora take a wholly different approach completely reimagining the track with tinkling arps and an air of hopefulness.

Breaking into the scene in 2018, Armenian artist Socko (@sockolive) has made great strides as a DJ playing for the majority of clubs and events in Armenia, becoming very popular in his motherland. Opening his production account in 2019 on Pipe and Pochet, Socko is now signed to several influential labels including Behrouz’ Do Not Sit, Shango and down.

Opening with two tracks featuring Romanian artist IV-IN, ‘Queen Is An Eagle’ a low- slung, nu-disco vibe saunters with bluesy vocals. Rubber band guitar licks and sleazy keys provide musical asides as the track gathers momentum midway before an oasis of a break and chunky conclusion.

Next up ‘Ghost is Not Human’ continues apace with nuanced guitars forming the low end, and moody keys punctuating the sombre male vocals. Organ lines midway add energy and interest. Finally, with the vocal talents of D’Litte, the EP draws to a close with ‘Red Wet Dress’. Ticking clock percussion and sweet vocals juxtapose in the most delightful way as a disturbing mutated siren signals the introduction of bass and tension. A thoroughly classy and creatively complex debut for an artist on the cusp of worldwide notoriety.

Raised in the Netherlands and inspired by his Balkan heritage, Satori returns to Crosstown Rebels this April with The Gin Song. Featuring acclaimed group My Baby, it’s the third and final single ahead of his upcoming album.

Famed for his dreamy, ethereal production and Eastern European influences The Gin Song opens with a raw drum kick, delightfully accompanied by a high pitched guitar riff, which perfectly echoes a band from the 70s or 80s. Produced at the Sonic Vista Studios in Ibiza, soft, delicate, folk-like vocals sweep in and whisk your mind away to the sun drenched shores of the Balearic Isle. His career has seen him hold an eighteen month long residency at Heart, Ibiza and receive over four - hundred - thousand listeners on Spotify each month. Maktub, a recent touring project curated by Satori, has been embellished in some of the most iconic clubbing institutions and provides a cinematic rave experience to accompany his live sets. He has a plethora of releases to his name on renowned labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Sol Selectas and DGTL Records to name a few.

My Baby is a Dutch - New Zeland trio based in Amsterdam. A relentless touring schedule has seen them acquire a large fan base for their live shows. Their unique sound combines rock and dance music with folk infused melodies, all played on instruments curating quite the spectacle to witness live. The trio are no strangers to clubs and festivals from all corners of the globe and have released through labels such as Embrace Recordings, Prehistoric Rhythm and Glitterhouse Records to name a few.

Sol Selectas is pleased to welcome back Mexico’s Metrika for his first solo EP. “Journey Through my past ” tells us the musical story of the artist,  capturing all of his knowledge and experience into the creation of these 3 original songs.

“Yo Naci” is a powerful tune inspired by an out of body experience, an intense aya journey where  Metrika saw his entire life flash before him,  and his self “died”, only to be completely reborn with a fresh start on life. The vocals are taken from a traditional Icaros ceremony. 
“Oda a un Bata” is a tribute to the Cuban drum or “bata”, which Metrika purchased a very long time ago while traveling to Cuba with his parents. It was on this trip to the island, where he became entranced by the “tamborileros” of Cuba, and started experimenting heavily with percussion. The recordings of traditional “toques de bata”, are by a Cuban percussionist living in Mexico City, who had revolutionized the ancient drumming techniques. 
“Once Upon a Triplet” fuses together 2 of Metrika's loves:  “the synths, textures and sound design from techno music,  and all the different percussion toys of traditional music” This track represents the past and present moments of Metrika as an artist. 
For the remix of “Yo Naci” we invited back our friends Matanza of Chile, who create a beautifully deep and slower rendition of the original. Layering more atmospheric interludes, additional Icaros, and a chunky tribal groove, they transform the original into a deep jungle trip.

The artwork by Helia Jamali portrays the powerful psychedelic journey, with the mystical serpent going through time and being reborn.

In Greek mythology, Icarus and Daedalus myth stands to represent man's ability to push himself to the limits, trying to achieve what was once thought as impossible.

Daedalus was a brilliant mind and found work in Crete as an architect ruled then by King Minos. He fell in love with Naucrate and they had a child whom they named Icarus. 
At some point, King Minos asked Daedalus to build a labyrinth for the Minotaur so he wouldn't escape and be hidden from everyone. 
He then kept Daedalus and Icarus prisoners in a high tower in Crete so they wouldn't reveal the secret of the labyrinth to anyone.

Considering their options to escape, it turned out the only way was by air. Deadalus conceived two pairs of wings with feathers he had gathered over time. He warned his son not to fly too close to the sun or sea. Icarus flew next to the sun and the wax holding the feathers together melted. He fell down into the sea and drowned. A little caution and some patience is necessary to achieve great things and we think the whole process of this EP describes just this.

After releasing a few singles on Anomaly Music Collective and Lump Records, Samaha crafted the Icarus EP over the past year and makes his debut on Art Vibes. With four original tracks, we aim at showcasing this promising producer from Seattle, USA. Coming from a trance background, Anthony has now shifted to the ethnic and worldly beats of house and techno.

‘Icarus', the main track of the EP is a solid progressive house collaboration with french duo Pandhora. Elaborate chord progressions and crafted chopped vocals blend with the delicate ethnic percussions and the gliding deep bass.

‘Sultan and the Scarab' showcases Samaha's trance background while presenting a lovely ethnic touch. In one ear, a booming royal horn synth to represent the Sultan, and in the other, a playful guitar to represent the Scarab. Combined with powerful drums, this will make any crowd dance through the night. 
Going further into Anthony's world, third track 'Asabiyyah' is a hypnotic electronic tale built up from trippy vocals and crazy arpeggios.

To finish off this EP on the right note, ‘Vendetta' echoes to ‘Icarus' as it presents the same vocal arranged differently in the background of the track. Samaha demonstrates once again his ability to compose unique melodies that stick to the ears.

For this EP, we are gifted with talented remixers who proposed an alternative to the original tracks, in their own refined styles. Spanish violonist and producer Alvaro Suarez as well as Athens based Lannka produced their own version of ‘The Sultan and The Scarab' while Gardens of Babylon's Vander worked on a psychedelic and deep version of ‘Asabiyyah'.

Gab Rhome launches his own label in an effort to simplify the process of releasing music, thus returning creative flexibility and freedom to the productions themselves. Rendez-vous is a personal pursuit, coming at a stage of reimagination for Rhome. Launching in collaboration with his debut live set, RDV will simply be a place for Gab's art in its purest form.

After All That pays tribute to the classic Gab Rhome groove - a housey beat overlays soothing vocals, reigning in the ropes for the b-side. A charming melody brings light to a tune driven by a sad and reflective message, with Gab himself providing the vocal chops.

"The pace of the vocal in After All That is inspired by RnB, soul music and general warmth. In fact, it's a bit of a contradiction to In The Rain There's No Lane." It's a tune for the calmer moments, with a groove that allows thoughts to flow freely. "The goal was to go for the cream on top of an espresso: packed with flavor, comforting, and a goosebump-based cure for a sleepy soul."

After gaining widespread industry acclaim for its original release four years ago, ​Smek by Tunisian duo ​Ÿ​uma will be reimagined this November with a bespoke remix package. Releasing on Crosstown Rebels, the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, SIS and MoM will be on duty to provide three distinctive remixes of the original.

Ricardo Villalobos leads the charge. Highlighting the signature sound with which he has become best known, ​Ÿ​uma’s hypnotic vocals converge on stripped-back kicks whilst subtle pads sing gently in the background. SIS’ remix comes next, blending tribal-laced drums with gentle acoustic guitar tones as whispering hats shimmer softly throughout, before MoM closes proceedings on a more ambient note, retaining the original’s folk-themed essence with emotive, slow-building percussion.

Ricardo Villalobos ​has been at the forefront of electronic music for over two decades. An eminent figure in the minimal techno sphere, releases on Perlon and his own Sei Es Drum helped cement his standing as one of the genre’s true heavy-hitters. Burak Sar AKA ​SIS is another of the minimal scene’s most long-standing artists​. ​Notable productions in the form of ​Trompeta ​and ​Nesrib ​were swiftly picked up by Groove Magazine, who went on to vote him ‘Producer Of The Year’ for ​Nesrib and award him ‘Track Of The Year’ for ​Trompeta​. Spanish-born ​MoM has garnered a reputation for sonic storytelling thanks to his bespoke approach to music, with releases on Still vor Talent, DeNature and a collaboration with Burning Man regular Acid Pauli further establishing his unique and varied sound.
