A couple of years ago Stockport wouldn’t have been the first town in Greater Manchester that springs to mind when thinking about up and coming indie bands. Now however, it seems the south Manchester suburb is a hotbed for emerging talent, as more and more bands all vie for the sudden spotlight the town’s now under.
Cultures are one such band. However, their intelligent and idiosyncratic brand of indie rock succeeds in elevating them head and shoulders above their contemporaries. It’s this that has afforded the band support slots across some of Manchester’s most iconic venues, including Giant Rooks at Night & Day Café, Marsicans at The Deaf Institute - a venue the band have since gone on to headline in front of a rapturous audience, cementing themselves as one of Manchester’s most promising new bands.
It’s not just the city’s music fans that have got behind the band. Radio plays from the likes of BBC Introducing Manchester and Trafford Sounds have all got behind the smattering of singles the band have released.
For those that have been following the band for a while, it’s clear that 2019 has been their strongest year yet. With that in mind, 2020 is a year that’s clearly theirs for the taking, and with releases planned and more live announcements on the horizon, you can expect to see a lot more from Cultures as the year progresses.

James E. Gray is a British songwriter, artist and producer based in London, UK, where he also studied songwriting at BIMM London (British & Irish Modern Music Institute). His work has been played on BBC Radio 6 Music (as ’Starship Wizard’), BBC News (worldwide), Fox News (USA), Al Jazeera, BBC Introducing (Humberside), Fox TV (Italy), MVM TV (Portugal), Radio Maximum (Russia) & garnered millions of streams across projects.

According to Navy Magazine, "The music produced is definitely suited to an arena. It demands a large space to fill and a thousand-strong crowd. As cliché as it is to say; you should expect big things to come.”

Led by wild and captivating front-man Fred Farrell, “Saytr Play have a burgeoning reputation for delivering a live show that’ll leave you begging for more (This Feeling, Gigslutz). Over the past few years the band have sold-out several headline shows at some of Manchester’s most iconic music venues as well as appearing at YNot?, Kendal Calling, 110 Above. Receiving plays from BBC radio 1, Radio X, Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing, as well as playlisting on Spotify (New Music Friday UK, Fresh Finds, Hot New Bands, Indie List) The band have racked up over 2 million streams on Spotify & a dedicated fanbase.

Following their hiatus, Saytr Play returned in 2023 year with ‘The Butterfly Stitches EP’ amassing over 450,000 streams on Spotify (Editorial backing on New Music Friday UK and Fresh Finds), BBC Introducing support, playlisting on XS Manchester and national radio coverage on BBC Radio 1 and Radio X. Off the back of this success, Saytr Play finished the year performing to over 1000 people at Manchester’s Iconic Academy 2.

Taken from the ‘Life in Black and White EP’ Saytr Play released the singles ‘Brother (YKTDY)’ and ‘Falling Out Of Love’ towards the end of 2023, again receiving editorial backing from Spotify and radio support from BBC Introducing, XS Manchester and Radio X. In January 2024, Falling Out Of Love featured on Jess Iszatt’s BBC Introducing show on BBC Radio 1, a huge moment for an independent band that prides itself on self producing and releasing their own music.

‘Only You’ will be released on 15th March 2024 and is our third single from the upcoming ‘Life in Black and White EP. Featuring distorted guitars and bright synths, the song speaks about the initial stages of a relationship where nothing else matters and you feel more alive than you ever have before. We wrote, recorded and produced the song in our bedrooms (something we’re massively proud of!) We always write music based on experiences that we have lived and we want the listener to feel that! The Salford band formed following a twist of fate in 2015. Influenced by the Manchester sound of '80s they add heavy a rhythm section and delayed guitars to give a psychedelic feel to their music.

The band have spent much of this year establishing themselves on the local music scene with a string of blistering live gigs. With promoters and labels wanting to work them it's looking like we should be hearing much more of the band over the next 12 months.

The single is starting to get airplay around the UK and is due for release in Early February supported by gigs around the country.
