https://soundcloud.com/martin-hoogeboom (1954) is an autodidact Dutch sound artist with long standing interests in transcending conventional instrument approaches and the use of non-instrumental organic and homemade sounds. Improvisation and collaboration are an important part of his work.

Some words about the MNEMOSYNE project:
"I was immediately interested in this project because I myself have a fascination for memories and the associated melancholy. Let's not confuse that with nostalgia: longing for a lost past. I am not a man for panta rhei: everything flows. I want time to stand still for at least 30 years. Why did my children have to grow up? Why not stay 3 and 9 for 30 years or longer? Why can't the clouds float low and slowly over the flat Dutch wetlands for 30 consecutive years? And can't I look at that for at least 30 years? My music bears witness to that desire, it is the eternal sounds of nature, sounds of ever-moving time that I save in a few minutes. Time stands still in my sound world. The tapes used in my contribution to the MNEMOSYNE project are recorded between 1961 and 2021. Time captured and stopped."

"What was a crucial sound experience in your life?"
For the first 5 years of my life I lived with my parents in an old dilapidated house in the woods.
Besides the fact that I thought I was the only little human in the world - that was a fright in kindergarten with so many other little humans - the sound of the wind in the fir trees made an indelible impression on me. As a toddler I used to go outside when I woke up at night. Night sounds and the sound of the wind were crucial to my development as an artist. The sound of the wind in the pines is not included. I hear that sound in my head and enjoy the melancholy it evokes. Can call it up anytime, anywhere, but it can only be heard by me.
