The music, sounds, and vibrations encapsulated in this 160 minute DJ mix performed by .THE JASS. at ENTER. on July 4th 2013 in Space Club are not usually heard on the summer island paradise of Ibiza.  .THE JASS. played a total of 5 hours in the cave-like MIND room:  thick smoke, throbbing strobe lights, and metallic mesh stalactites created the dark dwelling for deep musical experiments in lower BPM ranges, heavy atmospheres, and hypnotic grooves - those who ventured within the MIND room were pulled into a black hole in the middle of ENTER.Experience.

Special thanks to Richie Hawtin for the opportunity to DJ at ENTER. It was an honor to be cloaked in the ENTER.MIND room. To relaunch his seminal imprint, Infrastructure New York, Function presents his new 12", Green EP. Celebrating 27 years of Function releases this year and the label’s 25th anniversary, the label will serve as an outlet for his new material, reissues of out of print classics from Synewave, Sandwell District and Ostgut Ton (and of course, Infrastructure), as well as developing new artists and launching a long awaited Bandcamp page - exploring the annals of nearly 30 years of the Function sound. No doubt fans will be excited.
As a member of the Sandwell District collective, David Sumner aka Function, from 2007 onward was instrumental in cultivating and ushering in a new sound of dark, cerebral hypnotica - forcing the hand of change in global techno. Green EP serves as a testament to this, further exploring these depths. The EP pays homage to the day when David arrived in Berlin with his green suitcase where his record “Isolation” on Sandwell District was released, hitting the ground running and springboarding into an incredibly successful career, becoming a stalwart DJ/producer, after years as a struggling artist.

Green EP encapsulates the same raw power and hypnotic energy of his genre defining Sandwell District releases Isolation, Anticipation and Variance, updated with a modern flair. Subject f (Function) has clearly transcended, as expressed through the opening track “Initiation” arriving at his “New Designation”. On the b-side Function communicates his divine alignment through the broken beat, etheric “Aeternum (Meridian)”. Finally, Function closes Green EP with a live extraction of “Desire and Memory”, a brooding club stormer in contrast to the more experimental leanings of the original version, which appeared on Rrose’s label Eaux. One thing is clear: Function is back on track and more on form than ever!

Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.

VRIL is one of the most reliable artists in techno. He emerged with a style that was his own and has pretty much stuck to it ever since. Eight years after his debut, that loopy, dubby take on the genre sounds as vital as ever, and most often comes on labels like Delsin, Dystopian and Giegling. A live set from the German is just as floor facing and effective. It will veer from deeper moments of intensity to trippy, off kilter drum patterns that are designed to keep you moving. 

Here he serves up a perfectly mix that syncs perfectly with the changing season: it’s all warm and cuddly from the off, with cosy dub techno cocooning you in an inviting sound world that slowly transitions into more twisted and straight up techno. Whether the drums are thumping or laying more horizontal, there is an absorbing intensity to VRIL's work that proves he is someone who has a real mastery of his art.

(pronounced ‘dot THE JASS dot’) born in the USA and raised in the ski resort town of Park City, Utah [home to The Sundance Film Festival] currently lives in Williamsburg Brooklyn NYC is a DJ, Visual Artist, Video Director whose underworld creations take a firm place in the dark subconscious. 

 DJing experimental electronic music that is built up with cinematic soundscapes, taken down with deep ambient, then dragged around with drone metal, a .thejass. DJ mix creates a haunting experience for the mind. With DJ sets around NYC gaining attention, .thejass. DJ mixes have been showcased nationally on Proton Radio, East Village Radio, and Newtown Radio culminating in .thejass. first international gig in July 2013 to play Richie Hawtin’s ENTER. opening party at Space Club in Ibizia Spain.
