Oh what a time it's been...

After a small hiatus with the mix series I felt it was important to keep going with it. This beautiful healing music by Berlin based @slowfoam is exactly what the doctor ordered. Slowfoam is the cyber-atmospheric, bubblescape, synthetic pop, and ambient sound project of Madelyn Byrd

"In this mix, I wanted to drift between otherworldly realms to reassociate with the things I love most about ours. For me, some of these things include laying on the earth and pretending to merge into the blue sky, the sonic and energetic sensations of being alone in nature, or staring at a glistening river until falling into a trance. But also, having friends and loved ones I miss so much I start to giggle when I think about the fun we've had together, and then fun we'll have together again."

"i ve always had a bit of a split personality between really fast,
loud or sensous bangers and all-envelopping, thick-padded, soothing
ambient. in the past i got to share my poppy obsessions du jour directly on the dancefloor back when clubs were still a thing and i was running a silly,
chaotic and very gay monthly party called saint hollywood.

with almost all of my coping mechanisms suddenly unavailable and a bunch of
writing to do, i ve spent most of the past year digging for soft, soothing sounds i can listen to over and over, especially at times when i can barely listen to music at all.

Welcome on board, here's the 55th episode of the Stellar Series.

Rig Thrall is one of those artists with strong character and style, plus an eclectic and varied selection combined to solid influences. A racy techno style combining planar and tribal music but also progressive trance, breaks and marked tones from the 80s-90s.

He co-created various projects during his young life in this industry, such as @rakya-records (label & collective) in Paris or OQULT collective in Montreal (facebook.com/oqultmtl) for the most recent.

Also producer, he released two EPs, including one on his own label, and several collaborations on movie or advertising soundtracks. He is currently working on new projects which should see the daylight soon. Case to follow.

The talented DJ has become known through Sure Thing's exciting bill of events, mixes & releases, with an unwaveringly genuine commitment to music and the bright community that surrounds it in the US and abroad. 

As a DJ, Aaron has become known for his taste for deep & dark, yet somehow always whimsical and warm music, having pulled together beautiful musical narratives for a range of notable mix series - this mix is no exception. Earthen Sea is the experimental ambient/techno solo project of Jacob Long.  He began releasing Earthen Sea material during the early 2000s. Released on limited-edition cassettes and CD-Rs, some of his earliest material utilized violin, tape decks, and keyboards to create eerie soundscapes.
In 2014, taking a more beat oriented approach, the "Mirage" EP was released on the Lovers Rock imprint.  This release was followed by the project's first full-length "Ink"which appeared on Lovers Rock in 2015. A digital EP titled "The Sun Will Rise" was released by Nicolas Jaar's Other People in 2016. Following a move to Brooklyn, Long released "An Act of Love," his debut on Kranky, in 2017. Two years later, the same label released his third album, "Grass and Trees," which presented a stripped-down, skeletonized version of dub techno.  The soon to be released album "Ghost Poems" will be his third release for Kranky.

In a relatively short space of time, London-based imprint Lobster Theremin has become one of the most talked about record labels in the city. Helmed by Jimmy Asquith, the label has caught people's attention with a slew of releases that skirt the outer edge of house, techno and electro, often from little known artists.

Alex Humann - Hiver (MixCult Ambient Series 2016)

Richard Vergez launched the Night Foundation project with little fanfare in 2016, with several tracks and a new artist page appearing inconspicuously late at night in the UK time zone. With him already being a part of the Lobster network - producing the iconic collages that burnished the stellar Raw MT 'Richard's Revenge' and Hedge Maze 'Kerb Hits' releases - it wasn't long before Lobster Theremin's Jimmy Asquith became literally the 12th play of these new tracks via the usual social media algorithmic attraction.

Soaring solo synth expeditions came floating from the tinny 3am laptop. With headphones and a better system; a full sonic explosion of raw hardware warmth, twinkling icicles and soft landing pads. 

Nostalgic, interlocking melodies and slow drawn-out synth lines that nod back to the psych rock workouts of Steve Hillage and even elements of Pink Floyd. A steady and studied extended improv evoking patience, peace and interstellar harmony. Formed of three completely individual yet inseparable parts, Memory Bells is a touching and truly special body of work. Evocative, immersive and another Lobster Sleep Sequence catalogue entry for quieter times.

The Intergalactic Research Institute for Sound presents DE, a compilation of various artists representing Georgian electronic and ambient music.

დე / DE is a compilation of music from artists of different backgrounds getting together in order to showcase the dynamic influences within the Georgian scene. 
Tbilisi is getting worldwide recognition at the moment for its booming club scene, but what this project aims to illustrate is what is happening outside of the club context.

Natalie Beridze who has been performing worldwide since 2004 is known as the first female electronic music artist in Georgia, Rezo Glonti has built his studio inside the hull of his boat, and Zesknel is a resident of the renowned Bassiani club, while MYI and Severiane were discovered thanks to Myspace, Soundcloud, and word-of-mouth. All these talents manage in their own ways to present დე / DE, with murky and melancholic cuts.

Melancholia is at the core of beauty in Georgia. That is not the case in Germany and many other cultures, where melancholia is often charged and bound to a negative feeling, which some might perceive as weakness. Consequently, one could be tempted to say that even if it‘s electronic music, DE has a traditional Georgian quality. But that would be putting art in boxes or cases — because what is Georgian art nowadays, when so many artists from this origin are scattered around? As Giorgi Maisuradze states in his mission statement for DE, “the world is their home”.

As the sun rests it´s eyes turning in for the coming season, we also turn inwards to Unrush founder and Tresor resident Mareena to provide the closing edition of our summer series. A reflection of the particularly dreary summer we had here in Berlin, this mix is inspired by a recent Unrush session at Herrensauna in Tresor Berlin. Tunneling deep into the unconscious mind, it functions as both a foreground and a background, teasing the attention of the listener with a deliberate pacing only Mareena could execute. For techno in Amsterdam, few do it better than Sandrien. The Dutch native has been collecting records in her hometown for the best part of two decades, and became a staple of the city’s underground scene through MAD2 – the club night she ran with friend Carlos Valdes. Building on the success of MAD2 she went onto establish Imprint – the night she’s best known for – which she ran at the much-loved Trouw club up until its closure at the beginning of 2015. In the years since she’s been playing out increasingly beyond the Dutch capital, with 2017 seeing her tour Asia and stop off in Berlin for regular appearances. This rise in popularity is a real testament to her prowess as a selector.

On 14th October she makes her Farringdon debut, so we didn’t hesitate in inviting her to record a mix for us to introduce herself. For her mix, she dropped a carefully-curated selection of ambient, IDM, broken beats and techno, before discussing her record digging habits and the scene in her hometown.
