This month's show pays tribute to a visionary and one of my personal heroes, Jon Hassell. At age 84, the composer and trumpeter passed away in late June and left an unmatched legacy of music to live on in our world. He released several of my most cherished records over the last six decades—my favorite of them all being 'Aka/Darbari/Java: Magic Realism' from 1983 (cover art by Mati Klarwein). This show focuses on his "Empire" tracks from that album, played in sequential order and peppered with selections from other Hassell releases that I love. His discography is so much bigger than this mix, and these two hours captures the vibrance in his work that has been a guiding light for Bright Patterns since its conception.

We kick spring off in Australia with a mix by Jordan Obarzanek, the Melbourne-based artist who makes music as Body Clock, OBA and runs the cassette label Happy Tapes. Their mix consists of tracks that have been helping the producer “during times of lockdown and life coming to a standstill”, touching on genres and styles including shoegaze, post-punk and minimalist electronic music.

Rather than transport — as his music as Body Clock and OBA often does so well — Jordan’s chosen tracks that “will hopefully help one feel more present in their own body/environment”. There’s a rough, grounded quality to their mix; it feels like the antithesis to the ethereal ambient we tend to gravitate towards during time of isolation, and I’m all the better for having heard it. It’s a huge pleasure to welcome Jordan on to the series. I’m such a big fan of their music — especially this gem on .jpeg Artefacts — and I had no idea I needed this mix until I pressed play. Hopefully you feel the same way about it.

Theory Therapy 26: Body Clock

This month’s show features Critique of Everyday Life, a record label founded by William Selman and Émile Zener (Chris Miller, Gunnar Haslam) that presents experimental music and sound art at its finest. Selman’s latest release ‘Saccades’ is out on September 10, and both artists showcase their own work and vast influences across this special edition of Bright Patterns. They’ve been an endless source of inspiration and camaraderie as this show continues to build a wide network of sonic interpretation. The first half is Zener, followed by Selman at the one-hour mark with an exclusive premiere of “Waking Tracing” from ‘Saccades.’

New Palm's seasonal mix series is back after a year hiatus with our very own Penumbra, aka Alex Bautista. Alex has been part of New Palm since our start in 2018 when he lugged speakers up the Angeles Crest for our first mountaintop gathering (the speakers never made it, but Alex did).
