This month's show pays tribute to a visionary and one of my personal heroes, Jon Hassell. At age 84, the composer and trumpeter passed away in late June and left an unmatched legacy of music to live on in our world. He released several of my most cherished records over the last six decades—my favorite of them all being 'Aka/Darbari/Java: Magic Realism' from 1983 (cover art by Mati Klarwein). This show focuses on his "Empire" tracks from that album, played in sequential order and peppered with selections from other Hassell releases that I love. His discography is so much bigger than this mix, and these two hours captures the vibrance in his work that has been a guiding light for Bright Patterns since its conception.
