Shikha invites folks to join the journey of connection as she explores and emotes through the landscape of underground dance music, paying distinct attention to both 90's and contemporary modalities. She gravitates towards driving grooves, curious quirks, and soulful release. Her tenure in Berlin, years-long curation for Los Angeles FM waves, and reverence for the roots of dance music echo into the sound she plays in New York.

Through South African apartheid, police brutality, and an epidemic that decimated a generation on to today, house music as a source of expressing  pain, resistance, and joy remains a constant and vital element. While some of these songs are decades old, we still find ourselves facing similar issues today. Learning from our past can bring us to a better future and listening is crucial. Freedom is still the refrain - free from the hate that kills us whether it is from bombs or systems that discriminate based on race, sexual orientation,and gender identity. Shouts to all artists who use their music to send a message. I hope this short transmission lands on the listener in a way to raise hope and resolve to fight for what is right. We are all connected in the struggle.

This photo helped me think of the title for the mix. This photo is from 1990, where over 100,000 Haitians marched over the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the FDA designation that deemed Haitians too "high risk" to donate blood due to the AIDS epidemic. This was the first protest I ever attended. My Dad took me out of school to attend. I think about this a lot, even more so now since my father transitioned last year. In Kreyol. protests are called 'manifestasyon', so I would like to call this Manifestation.

"an event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea"

I think all art, especially music, can be that manifestation (at times!) and can bring us closer to the world we envision if we listen and act.
